AUSTIN – Watching a freshman running back, a teenager who should be finishing out his senior year of high school and picking out a tux for prom, slice through the Longhorns’ defense like a knife through butter must have made defensive coordinator Todd Orlando cringe.
But the third-year coach who came over with Tom Herman from Houston also had to acknowledge how special the Cuero product looks. Orlando called Whittington and sophomore tailback Keaontay Ingram “outstanding” following Tuesday’s practice.
The video footage fully supports that claim.
In a clip posted to the team’s official Instagram account Whittington takes an inside handoff from sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger and proceeds to bully his way into the end zone, leaving destruction in his wake.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Ayodele Adeoye attempts to wrap up Whittington a few yards past the line of scrimmage, but the 6-foot-1, 215-pound bull maintains his balance and keeps chugging along. Adeoye loses grip and faceplants into the turf.
Sophomore cornerback Jalen Green meets Whittington next. Their encounter ends similarly: Whittington dashing toward the end zone, defender facedown on the field.
Sophomore defensive back D'Shawn Jamison then emerges and tracks Whittington from behind. His pursuit ends in failure, just like all the rest.
Offensive coordinator Tim Beck likened Whittington to former do-it-all wideout Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who declared for the 2019 NFL draft following a breakout junior campaign.
But, Beck added, “he’s faster, much faster.”
“He can play a lot of positions,” Beck said Tuesday. “He understands the game. He’s a quick learner. You show him or teach him once and he usually gets it. And he’s very dynamic with the ball in his hands.”
