AUSTIN – Texas junior Miranda Elish issued a brief update Tuesday morning on her status after being struck in the face by an errant throw from catcher Mary Iakopo last Friday.
“I first want to thank everyone for all the prayers, texts, phone calls, and messages they have been sending my way, I am so grateful for each and every one of them,” Elish wrote. “I would also like to give a HUGE thank you to the University of Texas’s amazing sports medicine staff. They are taking great care of me and making sure we are covering all of our bases so the healing process is as quick and comfortable as possible.
“I thank Alabama, as well as their medical staff, for all that they did for me while we were still in Tuscaloosa.”
Elish incurred an injury to her sinuses in the top of the second inning during Game 2 of UT’s super regional matchup with Alabama. Iakopo barehanded a bunt in front of home plate and attempted to throw out the runner advancing to second, but the hard-thrown ball hit Eilsh in the face, dropping her to the ground.
Elish was immediately removed from the game and transported to a local hospital while Texas rallied to win, 7-5, and force Game 3. With Elish unable to play, Alabama won Saturday, 8-5, to eliminate the Longhorns.
This season, her first at Texas after two at Oregon, Elish threw 185.1 innings and compiled an 18-10 record with a 1.81 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 226 strikeouts.
Elish was the star of the Austin Regional, throwing four straight complete games – all wins – with Texas one loss away from elimination.
“Was looking pretty bleak after Friday,” first-year coach Mike White said on May 19. “But we wanted to keep battling and see how far we can go. We know other teams have done this before. We used it as motivation. And of course,...
