AUSTIN – Texas and design firm Populous have released new renderings of what the forthcoming expansions and renovation at Royal-Memorial Stadium will look like once completed in the summer of 2021.

Last September Kansas City-based architectural firm Populous was awarded the contract for the $175 million Royal-Memorial Stadium south end zone expansion and renovation. Poplous has completed high-priced expansion and renovation projects for a number of college football programs, including Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Purdue.

The UT System Board of Regents approved the project last August following a 4-minute presentation by University of Texas president Greg Fenves.

The project’s primary objectives, as laid out by Fenves, center around “enhancing” the student-athlete experience, improving fan experience, and creating an atmosphere compelling enough to draw fans away from the relative comfort of their living room.

The 96-year-old horseshoe stadium will be transformed a full bowl, though seating capacity will not increase. High-priced loge boxes will be added and occupied by wealthy alumni and boosters, some of whom have already their own funds to this massive undertaking. Coaches will occupy swanky new offices on the interior and a successor to the monstrous “Godzillatron” video board will be erected above the center of the south end zone.

The new stadium club will be lined in wood paneling and adorned with burnt-orange regalia of all sorts.

Athletic director Chris Del Conte said about $80 million of the project's $125 million fundraising goal has already been met. The remaining $50 million will be drawn from premium seating and ticket sales.
