I must admit, this season has been a disappoinment and a lesson in patience & dealing with frustration. In some respects, this season has just dragged-on at a snail's pace. When you've known for the past 4 seasons that a change had to be made at the Head Coaching position, and that decision to finally make a change at the Head Coaching position had been made since Week 4 of the young season, well the end of the season just can get here fast enough! That being said, I DO love College Football. And when the season is finally over, there is a void that lasts for 8 months until it comes around again.
And even though this season has been disappointing, I must admit that "bye" weeks just suck. If my team aint playing, it may make for a more relaxing day- but it also leads to a more boring day! Sure, I watched a lot of football, but I didn't have a "dog in the fight." College Football is just not the same when your team isn't playing. Furthermore, College Football isn't the same when your team isn't even relevant and has instead become "National Punchline" of respected College Football Analysts. And cuss the analysts if you want BUT the truth of the matter is they are speaking the TRUTH about where our program sits today. The truth hurts!
On to observations from yesterday:
1. With the Jameis Winston situation heating-up and Johnny Football's performance against LSU yesterday, Bryce Petty had the "stars alligned" for a Heisman-moment break-out game. Well after last night, forget about it
2. I think there were some of us out there that were thinking eventually Baylor would turn into a pumpkin. I have to admit, I reluctantly bought-in to the hype myself after OU but began seeing chinks in the armour against Tech. Nevertheless I chalked-it-up to "having an off-night" and still being able to winning going away. Last night the breaks just went against Baylor. Also, like everyone else this time of the season Baylor was pretty nic'd up at several positions. Bottom line is Baylor just ran into a "buzz saw" last night and got smoked. Some times it's just not your night and that was the case for the Bears last night. That being said, I'd take Art Briles and Texas' deep pockets in a heart beat! For the record, I would be happy with Mike Gundy as well!
3. Well apparently Johnny Football doesn't like playing in the cold! I love watching that kid play but yesterday he looked like there were about 1,000 places he would rather be than in Baton Rouge in the cold. I can't say I blame him. I will say this, John Chavis put together a wonderful game plan in defending the Aggies. His defense "contained" Manziel and kept him in the pocket where he is less lethal. It was a great defensive game plan and it was such a great defensive game plan that that game probably cost Johnny Football not only the Heisman, but $ on Sundays as well!
4. This has been said before, but I'll say it again: I wonder how long it would take our program to get turned around if the next staff implements a physical Alabama/Stanford program as opposed to a spread-centric type of system that Meyer/Briles/Sumlin/Malzahn run today? We all know Meyer hasn't last a game since taking the reigns in Columbus and it sure hasn't taken Gus much time to get things turned around on Plains. In contrast, injuries or not, Muschamp is 3 years into doing a "total make-over" with one of the most succesful programs and he may run out of time before completing the makeover- which is probably fine with the Gator fanbase.
5. Speaking of Muschamp and makeovers, I NEVER understood why Mack went away from an offense that got him to 2 National Championship Games, 2 Conference Championships, and 1 National Title. Not only did Muschamp set back his former program with this smash-mouth approach to offense but he seems to be doing the same with his current program as well!
6. I just don't see how Brady Hoke last more than 2 more seasons. Say what you want, but programs like Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC being down hurt College Football as a whole in my opinion. College Football just isn't the same when the "old school powers" aren't winning the way we've come to expect them to win.
7. I am glad to see some of these "paper candidates" people were throwing around to replace Mack take the gas. I believe that there are probably 50 coaches that can do a better job than Mack Brown is doing today as Head Coach BUT this is not a job for a "light-weight, up-and-comer." I have never understood the interest in guys like Pat Fitzgerald, Al Golden, Troy Calhoun, & Larry Fedora. This job is just SO much bigger than just being a Football Coach and I'm not sure any of these guys are ANYWHERE near ready for a gig like that. On the flip-side, when you consider Head Coaches in the NFL and their frenetic schedules, despite lack of experience with recruiting, I would feel MUCH better about a John Harbaugh or Mike Tomlin than these guys on organizational skills alone.
8. If I am Steve Patterson, my top candidates are (in order):
1. Urban Meyer
2. Nick Saban
3. Pete Carroll
4. Jim Harbaugh
5. Art Briles
6. Sean Payton
7. David Shaw
8. Kevin Sumlin
9. Chip Kelly
10.Mike Tomlin
9. Why people think that we have to "settle" at the University of Texas is beyond me! The University of Texas Head Coaching job is seen by many as the BEST Coaching job in Football today. BOTH PRO & COLLEGE! Now with that being said, WHY would someone NOT want have the best Head Coaching position in either Pro or College? Money USED to be the issue on why coaches chose the NFL over the Collegiate Ranks. That is no longer the case today. Take money out of the equation since it is not an issue, if you're Nick Saban, would you rather coach and live in Cleveland? Or would you rather coach and live in Austin?
10. All that being said, I believe that Nick Saban will be coaching in Austin next season. Read the tea leaves. Things have gotten extremely quiet- just the way Nick and Sexton like it. The reason you're not hearing any other names being discussed is because it is like guys like ZZZIZZZY say: this thing has left the station and is way down the tracks at this point. And YES, it is about MONEY! When you lose $30M in real estate investments then how can it NOT be about money?! And mama not liking Tuscaloosa doesn't help Bama's cause.
It's Thanksgiving week and my daughter's boyfriend is going back to Houston for Thanksgiving. Consequently she wants me to go with her to her very last UT Home Game Thursday Night against Tech. There once was a time I couldn't be MORE pumped-up about a game but today I just would rather stay home and watch it on TV. The real reason I am going is because I want to spend those moments with my daughter, one last time, watching my kid watch the game. One day they are a little 4 year old girl with UT Cheerleader outfit and pompoms, and the next day she is getting ready to graduate from the University of Texas. Enough of the sentimental crap, I don't really know what to expect against Tech and furthermore, I hate to say it, but I am indifferent and don't care because the coaches and players don't care. Bring on the new regime. Just like all of you, I'm ready for change and it can't get here soon enough!
