I've probably been as anti-Briles as anyone on this board. But the more I think about it, the more I'm coming around to him possibly taking over. There are a couple of reasons why I would like this.
First, I don't think we need to be looking for a coach who is going to be here for 15-20 years. Coaches get complacent or wear our their welcomes over time and it's almost impossible to find a coach who was successful that far into their tenure on a consistent basis. With Briles' age, there's almost no way for him to be coaching when he gets close to 70 so that means he'd have a chance to come in, fix things, make some runs and then step away for new blood. Pretty much the same as what I'd expect from Saban.
Second, his offense is a work of art. He takes lightly recruited kids at just about every position on that side of the ball and turns them into monsters. Can you imagine what he would be able to do with the kids that he could recruit here? He's taking 3 star QBs and making them 5 star monsters. Jerrod Heard would be unstoppable. And his churns out OL like they are nothing too. Development is something that has been lacking in Austin recently and Briles has been an expert at that.
Briles isn't my first choice. I think Saban or Meyer would and should be our first calls. But if and when both of them turn us down, I wouldn't mind Briles getting that next phone call. I'm making the assumption that there's no chance on a guy like Tomlin coming and I don't think we are going to really look at Gruden. So if we miss on Saban and UM I think the only guy closer to being a sure thing is Briles.
And I understand the argument about how bad his defenses are. That's a major worry. But at the same time, there would be a line of coaches willing to come here to run the defense and get that jump start that is needed to become a head coach. Briles would be given what amounts to a blank check to hire who he wants and there aren't many DCs out there who would turn us down. Not to mention the fact that if he turns the offense into the juggarnaut that it could become we wouldn't exactly need the defense to do much except force turnovers and slow the opponent down anyway.
