Les Koenning ?

I am hearing that Les koenning is the one for WR........How old do you think he is. Hire by default due to OC non hire (what I think , not information from anyone else)
He's 54.

He was a helluva player for Hampshire-Fannett back in the day and his dad was the HC.

Played QB for Texas didn't he?

Have no idea what he has been up to...would rather have Todd Dodge. Whatever happened to his counterpart Brent Duhon?

Not really happy about Les.

An 18 year old wide receiver can play for Briles or Sumlin. Throw in Kingbury. High Tech.

Or they can play for Les Koenning.

Tough choice. I know.

Les played at Texas in the late 70's and early 80's. He was a teammate of Bedford. His dad Les Sr was a well known high school coach in Texas. I remember he coached at Cy Creek and later at Houston Memorial. I think his name will get him into a lot if high schools because coaches know him. Not sure how good of a closer he is however.

He is 54. Hardly old. Jeez. Some people will complain about ANYTHING! This board is starting to resemble OB unfortunately.

Yep, to say he can't recruit in Texas is beyond laughable. The guy may know the recruiting scene in Texas better then anyone. Hell my old high school coach used to talk about Koenning Sr. all the time.

If we have Koenning to give us the address book, why do we need Chambers? Go get Brewster for TE's and lets roll

Sorry to burst your bubble but Koenning knows this state backwards and forwards. He will do just fine in recruiting.
Just because you know the state & might have a few beers with a HS head coach does not mean you can relate to a 17/18 yr old WR recruit.

Sorry its not a good hire.

Gunter Brewer, Joker Phillips, Wyatt etc tons of other guys could have had this spot including my personal favorite Lincoln Riley who could have double dipped as OC/WR.

Such a head scratcher. Its a what the hell are you thinking hire and do you have any freaking clue who you are recruiting against?

I don't think Strong understands the demographics of this state and I don't know how this could have happened.

Burton thinks he's coming too. Curious to see what happens with Watson

This hire is strange to me. He was OC/QB coach at MSU and he's coming back as a position coach? Was the money that much more than he was making at MSU?

The other strange thing to me is that, according to his MSU bio, he's been a QB coach since 1998.

We'll see what happens. The staff on offense seems to lack a recruiting "rain maker" like a Brewster or someone of that caliber.

With the dead period ending tomorrow and coaches going out on the road Thursday gotta think the official release on the hires will come tomorrow.

My theory is that Mullen told him to see if he could find another job. Don't think he did a great job at MSU.

Add him to Chris Rumph who were likely rejects from their current teams (I.E. it was probably recommended that they try to find another gig).

my guess is that watson might be leaving for the nfl. if so, then i guess this hire makes sense.

but in actuality, besides wickline, (and yeah I am going to say it), I am very unimpressed.

Rumph is pretty highly regarded as a DL coach around the country. I get people want to assume saban kicked him out but people claimed bo Davis was a saban reject and he just hired him back after rump went to Texas.

From MSU web site ...

Head Coach Dan Mullen spent the first 14 years of his career coaching on the offensive side of the ball and four at Florida as offensive coordinator. When he began his search for an offensive coordinator, Mullen found Les Koenning - a coach with more than 25 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge not only about developing quarterbacks but also about the spread offense.

Koenning is not only experienced coaching on the collegiate level in general, he gained some of that knowledge during a previous stop at Mississippi State. His second full-time position in the college ranks was a four-year stint in Starkville from 1986-89.

In just four short years, Koenning’s offense has nearly doubled the average number of points scored (15.2 ppg in 2008; 29.5 in 2012) and has developed the Bulldog offense into an attack that has never been seen in Starkville. The last three seasons marked the highest combined three-year offensive output in school history (14,825 yards), breaking almost every single offensive school record in the process.

During the 2012 Bulldog season, Koenning led the Bulldog passing attack to four different school records through the air: passing yardage, completion percentage, completions and touchdowns. With the success of the MSU passing attack something Starkville has never seen, the Koenning-led offense also set a school record in points scored (383).

In 2011, the Bulldog offense set the then school record for passing touchdowns in a season (19) and finished second all-time in school history in total offense and first downs. Koenning’s offense finished in the top 10 in passing yards, completions and completion percentage.

The year before, State placed among the top 10 in school history in the following categories: passing yardage, completion percentage, passing touchdowns, rushing attempts, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, total plays, total offensive yards, per-game offense and first downs.

Koennig wanted to come home. That's it. And there is a very good chance he will be co OC if Watson leaves. It's completely understandable.

MB, he is MSU's recruiting coordinator and considered an elite recruiter.

Your theory is wrong.
