That is an ugly stat ...I'll be the first to admit it. But when it comes to stats, sometimes you have to dig deeper.
The time period mentioned above was arguably, to WVU fans, one of the worst in Mountaineer history. We were just coming off Rich Rodriguez's tenure which really placed us on the national map. And on a drunken night in Arizona after the Fiesta Bowl, our then athletic director hired Bill Stewart.
That sat well with about 5% of our fans.
Stewart changed EVERYTHING. What was a high-powered offense quickly became I-formations, double tightends, and completely ultra conservative. Add into the fact the coaching staffs decision making was about as ludicrous as allowing my 5 year old daughter to drive a car, it was undoubtedly a complete nightmare.
Don't get me wrong, the players didn't perform up to their expectations. But they were asked to flip a switch they couldn't handle. It was like asking a young, athletic NBA team to play half court. It wasn't in their DNA.
Hopefully this gives you a little "background" on that stat. Because if you didn't know, it would smack you in the face.
