Kai

Write up by BC would place him as a WR...interesting. I wouldn't think he'd come if that were the case.

I noticed that is the position he played in the UA game.

I would think that we are recruiting him as a QB. Although it is nige when you have a player that can play another position, if things don't work out.

He wants to play QB, FSU sounds like they're trying to switch him to receiver because of that and the fact he and his family like Charlie, we have a chance of landing him.

I've watched a lot of film on Locksley over the last 24 hours. If people are looking for a Quarterback who is going to start Day 1, I don't think Locksley is the answer. But he is a very talented football player and he's worthy of a scholarship spot. I'd love for him to commit with us. Let me clarify that.

With that being said, he's still a pretty raw product. There are some things I think Watson will have to work through. It looks like Locksley's team predominantly ran a read-offense with a lot of horizontal passing. That works for systems like Oregon, Florida State and so forth but it's not what our Offense is trying to do. He can definitely hit his target in the numbers down field but when watching the film, you can tell those passes played second to a very close to the vest play-style. I thought one critique that I'd have when beginning to watch his footage would be his foot work. As in some plays he seemed to get caught up in the turf and planted when you'd like to see a clean break. However those concerns were eased when I continued watching the footage and saw his break away ability. There will be some things to iron out whenever he gets where he is going but I think he has what it takes to become a pretty serviceable Quarterback. I don't think he should settle on playing Wide Receiver somewhere. If you're looking for somebody to come in and beat Heard and Swoopes for the job next year, I don't think Locksley is going to be that guy. If you're looking for somebody who is going to provide great competition for the Quarterback spot with Gentry and likely start at some point, Locksley could be a very solid investment.

Agreed.  I don't think there is much chance that Locksley beats out Heard, and for being the son of an OC I'm a little disappointed in Locksley's QB play.  His mechanics are pretty 'meh' and he appears to be running a fairly simple offense even for high school standards (though I am admittedly no expert).  Kid is clearly an athlete and has a good arm - but I can't get over the mechanics of his QB play considering he is the son of a coach.

But if Watson and Strong want him on the 40 acres then so do I, I just wouldn't expect him to be an immediate contributor.

I agree.  I would much prefer Gentry, even though I think Locksley is the superior athlete.

My preference of high school QB's is probably different than most.  I would prefer Stidham over Gentry, Locksley OR Murray.

I just think he is going to be a beast at Baylor and will be a real thorn in UT's side.

Personally If we get Locksley I would love for us not to bring in any transfers or JUCO and just develop Heard, Gentry, and Locksley. Between those 3, we should have our QB position solved and good to go for the next 4-5 years (barring our offensive system/playcalling doesn't hinder them or limit their potential).

Assuming Heard wins the starting job - who is the backup?  Texas needs a backup capable of coming in and winning ballgames, and that guy isn't currently on the roster.

Obviously ideally/best case scenario we let Heard play the season and he does well and the backup will not play much regardless of who it is. But to answer your question- the backup this next year should just be Swoopes, as painful as that is to hear. Swoopes has the experience of this whole season plus another off season to be a viable backup for next year.

If we have both Locksley and Gentry than hopefully one of them is able to redshirt, and one of them can see some playing time in garbage time instead of Swoopes if need be. But again, hopefully Heard is the answer but if something happens than I think just let Swoopes be the backup until Gentry/Locksley is ready.

Swoopes cannot play QB. Needs to be a tight end, if he can block and remember the plays.

We really need a quarterback who does not need to redshirt and can just come in here and play. Both Locksley and Gentry really need a red shirt year, so we need someone to come in and either be the starter or the backup that has some experience.

There just may not be anyone that fits. :(

What did you see from Swoopes against TCU and Arkansas that makes you think he will be a viable backup next year?

True, I do not want swoopes to ever play again I just do not want a transfer or JUCO to be distraction or take away reps or playing time from heard

Why would a transfer or JUCO QB be a distraction any more than an untested and possibly lesser skilled QB already on campus? Do you not want an upgrade at QB?
