Its time to fire Strong

He's part of the Leach Tree.  It should be entertaining and Cumbie is the QB coach that is developing Boykin.

Johnny certainly created the AG SWAG so your not wrong in that assessment.
I guess when I look at Baylor they seem have success regardless of the QB.  Bryce Petty to Russel or Stidham.  I wont throw Johnson in that.  But without Boykin we have yet to see just how successful TCU would be.

Just saying.

I do not know much about Cumbie. I do know he doesnt call the plays since Meacham does.

What worries me about getting him is how much of Cumbie's success is by his doing or Boykin just being a competitive and gifted player. Add Doctson to this scenario as well.

The reason for this concern is Watson and Bridgewater. Boykin is probably the MVP for the Big 12. Without Boykin TCU isn't as impressive.

Sometimes great players make the coach and not vice versa.
That's a legitimate concern to have, given our experience with Watson. However with that said, don't forget that Cumbie was the Co-OC at Tech back in 2013 when they were rolling out multiple freshman quarterbacks and they still had the best passing offense in the FBS that year.
Edit: Correction, I just checked and they had the 2nd best passing offense that year.

Good point.

It appears Herman is poised to wait it out and has agreed in principle to the U of H gig.  He knows there is a good chance that one if not both instate giants could open up as eraly as next year.  I'd like to see him continue his road to success with another great season at Houston.

If we can land Cumbie, I wonder if we could swing Shawn Robinson to come to Texas? That would be a huge win/win!

Out of curiosity, how would you guys feel about seriously money slapping Richt to be the new OC? I know he'll likely end up a Head Coach elsewhere but it could be a good road for Mark. If the offense is amazing next year but the team continues to lose, he has a potential in to replace Strong.
"Oh yeah, no doubt," Richt said when asked if he'd coach again. "I'll say this: If an when I do coach again, I'll look forward to coaching again, being more hands on. I miss coaching quarterbacks; I miss calling plays.â€

Briles success at QB has really shined when he has had the opportunity to grow them within his system for 2 years before they get to start.  JS is a great young QB and the best Briles has ever recruited successfully, the kid was nearly the day 1 starter.

Briles offered the same guys Texas has.

Boykin a few years ago was FAR from being the Big XII MVP.... He was backing up Paschall (spelling?) and getting time at WR. He has seriously developed and it hasn't been without help. If Cumbie is the guy in charge of his development, then he did one hell of a job.

Yes he has done a very good job with Boykin.  People said the same thing about Watson with Bridgewater when he came here.

Its a chance you take but I think there is little doubt that Cumbie is a huge upgrade to Watson.

He's been saying this even before this season started. He's always said that he was gonna need one more good recruiting class. I don't see this as disrespect to the current team, he's just continuing to say what he's been saying since last NSD
I'm just saying that he should have had them headed in the right direction from the day he stepped on campus. It shouldn't take until year 3.

So now all of you people that thought we needed to fire Strong now, or lose out on Herman, can give Charlie one more year...

Is that right? I didn't think we needed to fire Strong but I don't see that anything's changed from yesterday or the day before or the day before.

I don't think anything is settled in any way, yet.

Even if it were, it would all be thrown up in the air again anyway during and after Baylor.

If they were going to fire Strong, it would be done already.  The Baylor game doesn't change anything, it's not a Les Miles situation where he needs to win in Waco to save his job.  He's not leaving on his own accord and the BMD's wish they could control the situation.

Expect Strong back in 2016.

I've remained silent on the boards for a while as I've watched the season play out and mostly because I can't for the life of me figure out which camp I'm in. I simply can't disagree with the assessment that Strong's team often comes in to games ill-prepared, consistently makes the same silly mistakes (penalties, mental lapses, etc.), and seemingly lacks any identify from one game to the next. There's a percentage of those shortfalls allocated to coaching and percentage allocated to a young team. I'm just not sure if it's 75/25, 60/40, etc., but it's insanely frustrating to watch and at times I find myself allocating 100% of the blame to coaching and want Strong gone. On the other hand, I don't know if a "2 seasons and you're out" precedent is one Texas needs to be setting. A quick way to lose the title of "a dream coaching job" would be to let our collective arrogance and lack of patience as a fan base appear as more trouble than it's worth to perspective coaches.

There's no arguing Strong has bungled the coordinator hires (both OC and DC in my opinion), but he's still "learning" how to be a head coach himself. We knew this when he was hired - hopefully he's learned a valuable lesson about how to fill out a coach staff going forward and won't make the same mistakes again. My biggest concern with a knee jerk firing of Strong and replacing him with Herman is even more "on the job" training. Herman has done great things in his one year - but what if Houston was already poised to be 9-3 or 10-2 due to experience and schedule? I guess I feel like holding tight for another year isn't the worst thing in the world. As others have pointed out, if Strong is fired, the next hire HAS to be right.

LOL, thanks for filling me in.

Weren't you the one just yesterday or day before using the phrase "done deal?" Where is that done deal today?
