HS FOOTBALL THIS WEEK 11-5

Class 4A state preliminary games

TAHOMA (6-3) vs. CAMAS (9-0)

When, where: 7:30 p.m., Doc Harris Stadium, Camas

Last week: Tahoma beat Thomas Jefferson 10-7 in SPSL playoff; Camas beat Heritage 49-0.

At stake: Winner will be District 4 No. 1 seed to state and host the winner of Bellarmine Prep-Kentwood

Common opponents: Rogers and Federal Way. Tahoma beat Rogers 48-41, lost to Federal Way 58-17. Camas beat Rogers 68-0, beat Federal Way 49-6.

About Tahoma: The Bears from Covington was the No. 3 team in the South Puget Sound League Northeast Division. Tahoma was outgained 336-164, but three turnovers and blocked punt proved pivotal for the Bears. QB Amandre Williams was 12 of 25 for 99 yards. Jerome Woods was Tahoma’s leading rusher last week with 36 yards on eight carries. LB Blake Donohue led the defense with eight tackles (five for loss), 12 assists and one forced fumble.

About Camas: The 4A GSHL champions are loaded with top performers like QB Liam Fitzgerald (2,268 yards passing, 21 TDs) and RBs Bryan Kelly (818 yards, 16 TDs) and Cole Zarcone (690 yards, 12 TDs). And you want a 1,000-yard rusher? How about a 1,000-yard receiving? WR James Price had 60 catches for 1,010 yards and 10 TDs. Hard to imagine that most of the Papermakers were coming off the bench or playing JV ball a year ago.

Prep Proletariat says: Ten points? 164 yards? Camas should have that by the first quarter.

Pick: Camas 56-0.

Score Czar: Camas 44-8

Anybody know the UIL's reasoning behind dividing  4A and lower divisions but not the larger schools? Boerne is in 14-4A-DI and there's also a 14-4A-DII. If they're going to split them come playoff time, why not do it in the season in 6A? I assume there's a reason.

Because of the volume of schools at the 4A level. Class 3A (now 4A) has always been the largest grouping of schools. Not enough schools in 6A to do that or it would cause some district games to be of ungodly distances.

Well, the Camas/Tahoma game just got interesting.

Tahoma suspends 45 athletes, including 14 football players

Posted by Sandy Ringer

Fourteen football players are among the 45 students and cheerleaders receiving athletic suspensions this week by Tahoma High School for violation of the athletic code.

The Bears (6-3) play second-ranked Camas (9-0) tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. in a Class 4A preliminary playoff game at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas

Coach Tony Davis said all 14 players were either starters or would have seen “significant time” in the game. The remaining players are rallying together.

“At first, there’s that shock,” Davis said. “Then they got refocused. That’s one thing we always talk about, focusing. It’s not what happens, it’s how you respond, and we’ve got great leaders.”

New players are anxious to step up, according to Davis.

“We’ve got a group of kids ready to go who want to make everyone proud with the opportunity they have,” he said.

Administrators got wind of one Halloween party with drugs and/or alcohol present on Monday and a second came to light on Tuesday, according to Davis, who is also the school’s athletic director. Investigations followed.

The night before the parties, the football team beat Jefferson, 10-7, to secure a playoff berth.

The school district sent out an e-mail and letter to Tahoma families Thursday, saying 41 student-athletes were being disciplined. That number had grown to 45 as of Friday morning, according to Kevin Patterson, the district’s communications director.

Twelve of those suspended are cheerleaders. The only other fall sport affected is girls soccer, which lost four players. Without them, the Bears won their West Central District match over 10th-ranked Jefferson Thursday night, 2-1 on penalty kicks.

The other athletes are scheduled to be involved in upcoming sports – wrestling (4), baseball (7), boys soccer (2) and softball (2). Should the spring-sport athletes (baseball, boys soccer, softball) decide to participate in a winter sport, their suspensions could be served then, Patterson said.

The district’s sanctions are based on 25% of the number of regular-season contests allowed by the WIAA, which varies by sport. In football, for instance, 10 games are allowed, so the suspension is 2.5 games – and any remaining would carry over to the next sport season or even the 2015 season, if the player is an underclassman who plays football only. Soccer is a 16-game regular season, which means missing four.

The punishment could be up to 50% if a student-athlete is not honest about his or her violation and further digging is required, but Davis said none feel into that category.

21-10 Manvel leads. Manvel QB D'Eric King is tearing it up early in the game.

Pearland just ran the kickoff return back for their first TD.

Manvel leads Pearland 28-10. 2nd qtr about to get underway.

I'll say this about Manvel's Gary Haynes, the dude can play. Small but extremely athletic and versatile.

Our struggles are squarely on the shoulders of SHA. It's all his fault.
