At this point, I'd rather see CDC coax Bob Stoops out of retirement than roll with WTH another year.

He was our 2nd choice behind Mack Brown back in the day. Worked out pretty well for OU.

Same dilemma as in the presidential election. 

Much as I despise Stoop's personality, I might vote for him for his coaching ability, even though he had a tendency to fold in big games. Can you imagine the hype each year? Mentor vs. pupil. 

Biggest drawback would be his affinity to stock the team with would-be inmates.

This was the problem I was saying from way back. Who you going to hire if Herman is let go? Very very few for sure things out there and if you can’t get one of them then you’re relegated to hiring an up and comers and for some reason those don’t work out at Texas. I don’t know if it is the culture, the demands on their time, the donor interference or what but those up and comers just don’t usually work out here. We’ve been nearly 10 years trying that. It’s expensive and it doesn’t work. 

Pretty much every coach that became elite was an "up and comer' at some point in their career. Ou has kicked ass hiring no-names who weren't even in the "up and comer" category. Hell, the majority of their coaching hires haven't even been head coaches before.

The term "student-athlete" was a made up term by the ncaa to win a court case in 1953, IIRC, to protect schools from workman's comp (hurt athletes) and taxes claiming amateurism and not-for-profit entities (colleges) - it worked, it stuck and precedence was set.  

For instatnce, Aggys 1939 NC had paid players on it but it wasnt against the rules before 1953

Disagree... prior to Stoops they were on a pretty bad hiring streak since Switzer (mid-80s). Since then only two coaches, one handed the keys to the car from Stoops.

Riley has done really well so far, but I'll be interested in seeing how he does when it's fully his own team.

Riley is in his 4th year at OU. I guess you're saying next year will be "fully his own team"?

He's 5-1 against WTH and has won 3 straight Big 12 titles as HC. I'd trade with OU right now.

We've paid players under-the-table, too, over the years - don't kid yourself. UT just isn't as brazenly stupid about it like aggy. No, I don't have any proof of this assertion.

"under the table" is completely different than legally & openly paid players that was accepted before 1953.  If players are paid legally and openly, then they can be considered employees. The court case had merit, however, most colleges in the '40s and '50s could not afford to treat athletes as employees and would have to shut down or turn all sports into club sports. The ncaa injected itself on the defense team to protect average athletic programs

It was my understanding that players were never compensated "legally and openly", but I haven't researched it nor am I a lawyer. What you say makes sense, though. Personally, I'd rather see NCAA sports be more "amateurish". But, that's just naive at this point.

Don't get me wrong... Riley's done a great job so far. 

My only point is that we've seen a lot of coaches have success with someone else's players. After those players leave, and the insitutional knowledge of that coach is gone, more times that not things get worse. This happens quite a lot actually. Maybe Riley may be an exception, so we'll see.

My concern is more for Texas if we don't get the big catch... Don't go chasing up-and-comers who are having success with another coach's team.

I agree with the sentiment.  I think there needs to be a new division 1+ or new league altogether that sheds the pretense that they are amateurs.  IMO, it's laughable that programs that are worth a billion dollars with budgets in the $100s of millions can be considered non-profit.

D1 football emphasis has been a boon for the NFL. No investment in minor leagues or early player development. It's quite a racket.

Everybody wins but the players living with and struggling with CTE and other nagging injuries.

I’m sure Urban has plenty of money. This job intrigues his ego. I’m sure he feels like Texas is a place where he could come in and make a run at a championship at a third different school. His name is already up there with some of the greats. Winning here could put his name in a very small company. 

I think they’ll make a change. It’ll either be Urban or who knows after that? With the stadium expansion and all the upgrades, CDC is not going to sit around getting beat by lesser teams.

there are two teams that could muck up the whole UM to UT deal....that is the USC Trojan job becoming available or the Michigan job becoming available, either or not could inflate the market price, and Texas has to make sure that they aren't bidding against themselves and getting played by UM 's agent the way that Jimmy Sexton played them with Saban, I would think CDC is much smarter than his predecessors

It was Gary Barnett at Northwestern that was the second choice. You may be thinking that Mackovic was given a blank check to hire a top defensive coordinator and that would have been Stoops. Instead  Mackovic hires a coach from his staff Bobby Jack  Wright which was a disaster.
