On what he liked from watching the UTEP game: The first thing that jumps to mind about what we liked was just our fight, that we battled. In some spots and some positions, we were next man up, so we were playing with some different guys. We continued to fight, we continued to battle. We learned, you know, there's nothing like playing in a game and getting game experience, so we gained some of that. We're also creating depth, which is huge.
On whether the team is ready to go on the road: As far as going on the road, we're going to get on that plane on Friday and we're going to go to California and we're going to go on a mission. We understand and we know what's in front of us. Our guys are really motivated, they're really determined, they're working within themselves, working within us and just like I've been saying, our focus again today in practice was on us, about us getting better and continuing to clean things up and be worried about us. Individuals working to correct mistakes and learning new fundamentals and techniques or continue to learn fundamentals and techniques that we've put out there as coaches.
On how the players are reacting to being rotated: Those guys understand that. That's something that we talk about and they understand. It's just about the growth in this offense and understanding the scheme of this offense and what can happen week in and week out. And again, our ultimate goal in this building is to win, and with our offensive kids is to win, and those guys know. We've got unselfish guys in that room, and we've got guys with no ego. But those guys understand and they know and they realize, one week it might be my week, or we might catch a lot of balls at this position and not so many at the other position. So those guys know and understand, and again, what we love about these kids is no ego, they're unselfish, and at the end of the day, everybody in this building wants to win.
On his biggest concern going into the game against Cal: Concern-wise, just focus on us and continue to get better. Here you sit, the third game of the season, the third game of the season in a new offense, so we still have room for growth. We still have room for improvement at every position, be it O-line, quarterback, skill position, running back. So that's what we're looking for. I don't know if concern's the word, that's just what we're focused on, is our kids, position-wise, on their improvement.
On Shane Buechele's first road game and whether that will change play-calling: Again, with Shane, you're just dealing with a guy that's obviously just young. It's his first road college football game. But you just go back to the last two environments that we played in at home, big crowds. Shane is focused, he's calm, and those are things he's got to continue to do for us to be effective offensively. For him, he'll just be focused and be himself and things will be fine.
On Shane Buechele's comment that the offense can be faster: He's right. Just at times, we can be a lot faster with just our alignment and just the fundamentals, the technique, the tempo. There's just some things that we can continue to get better at and be faster with. He's got a good grasp of that and understanding of that and understands the direction we still have to go and the room for growth we still have to go with tempo.
On his confidence in the depth of the team: Those are just things you continue to grow, week in and week out. Like I said, we were in a situation on Saturday where you play a lot of guys and again, game experience is invaluable. So you get a chance to roll some guys out there that now have game experience. That stuff's invaluable, from the skill position-wise and O-line guys-wise. So to have that definitely is a positive.
On whether the success of his new offense has made it easier to get players to buy in: I don't think I've seen a drastic change in their attention to us and what we're asking them to do. Our guys have been really motivated, they've been really tuned in, they've been really focused about what we've asked them to do. And then you go out, you're able to be 2-0 and have success the way that we've had and done some good things, and we've also done things that we've got to fix and correct. But our guys right now are really attentive, they're really focused and they're really determined.
On how the defense is performing with the front four: I just feel like we're developing as a group coming together. We really just honed in on what Coach Haley has been telling us and doing exactly what he asks and we go out on the field and produce and do what we need to do. He knows what he's talking about so we all digest it, take it in, and try our best to put it on there on the field on Saturdays.
On where his game has progressed the most: I feel like my game has improved in just my stance. You have to start from the groundwork and I feel like I've improved my stance. I feel like I've improved on taking on blocks a little bit. I still have a long way to go. I have not even come close to reaching my surface. So I'm not on any high or anything. Just taking it day by day, practice by practice, listening to Coach Haley with whatever things or nuances I need to improve on. I just take those digest it and go on the field and try to improve on that.
On recruiting for Texas: I just want to win. Coaches sought out guys that they wanted and I just said 'hey I'm going to help out anywhere I can to help out to get Texas back to where it needs to be at.' And if it's talking to guys to help Coach Strong then I'll do that. And we just said out we're going to do that for him and help him out.
On what challenge Cal's offense will present for the defense: Cal's offense is really good. Their offensive line is really good. We've looked over them and it's going be a challenge, it's not going to be easy so we've really got to just get in our playbook and again listen to the coaching staff and do what we need to do to go out there and compete at a very high level.
On putting pressure on Davis Webb: It's going to be huge because he threw the ball 78 times. I think he had three picks. So pressure gets him rattled, it would get any quarterback rattled so we have to put pressure on him and hopefully he throws bad balls and our DB's can go and pick it off and we'll be celebrating on the sideline.
On what he brings to the defense: Coach always praises communication and I feel like as a whole DB group we try our best to communicate the best. Without communication we are nothing so communication is key.
On what he needs to work on: I think I should just get more into the playbook and watch more film. Just us as a whole, because right now we're trying to get back to that level of DBU so we can produce. We want to hold teams to less than 7 points a game. That's the standard.
On Cal's offense: Well first that is an outstanding offense. To run those plays they did and have that much success and I feel like going into this game we're going to really have to concentrate on techniques and placement and leverage and know your job. Because if you don't know your job the band is going to be playing and we can't have that.
On bringing energy to away games: I just feel like we didn't bring the energy we need to bring. And so this year our mindset is first off prepare the right way. And then bring the energy. We're not going to be at home. We're away so we have to bring our own energy. The fans can't give us the energy we have to bring it ourselves.
On what the attitude he brings to the defense: Well for the most part I'm more of a mellow guy until it's time to play. When it's on the field, I'm ready to go. In the DB room it's me, bean [Kevin Vaccaro], and Jason [Hall}. When you come somewhere, we're going to make our presence be known. That's what we have to do. That's what they brought us here for.
On being a part of DBU at Texas: Before me being here, I sat back and I watched Michael Huff, Kenny Vaccaro, Earl Thomas, I sat back and watched them be successful here. And I feel like if they can be successful at Texas why can't I? Why can't we be a great DB core as a whole? So in the recruiting process me and all my other DB's that came here with us were like if they can do it we can do it. As a defense, it starts with the D-line and then the secondary. If you don't' have a D-line or secondary, you don't have much.
But I can't help thinking back to my days at the Estrada Apartments on Town Lake watching the Horns on our b/w TV take on the Cal Bears in wicked Kaliforina for the first game of the 1969 season on the road. My roommates and I had high expectations.
Turned out to be a damn good season of LONGHORN FOOTBALL.
Best wishes to Coach Strong and team, make it happen again.
