*****GAME THREAD: No.7 Texas Longhorns vs. BYU Cougars*****

Just watched Game Day Final that I recorded to watch later. They interviewed Christian Jones after the game, and he is a very impressive young man. It's clear to me that there's a lot of character on this team which I love to see.

I’m a little disappointed with this game. 8 games in we are struggling in the red zone.
Let me set your mind at ease. Consider this - in order to struggle in the red zone you have to get into the red zone. By anyone's metric that is where every team that plays football wants to be. The reason being is that in the red zone you have choices - kick a field goal or go for the TD. And more than half of the time you have four chances to do either. The disappointment, of course, is when you fail to score at all, BUT YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO.
Do not be distracted by negative vibes. That is the easy way out. Actually that is the aggy way out. Go read TexAgs and get my drift.

This 2023 UT football team is 7-1, on a track to win the conference and even get into the playoffs for a national championship. Sark has done an awesome job with recruiting and changing the culture in this program.

How was the defense coached in this game?

Here’s an observation that I am, admittedly, not qualified to make. Not meant to start a quarterback controversy (as if I could).

I love the way Maalik stands in and gets an (accurate) pass off when he knows he’s going to take a hit. I also love his positive vibe - and natural leadership abilities. The stage didn’t seem to phase him. And his arm-strength is a rare thing to behold. On the down-side, he makes some…. Ill advised throws. This needs to be coached out of him.

Here goes — If Maalik would have won the job in the spring, and been coached as the starter, with 7 games under his belt… we’re in better shape right now.

This isn’t a knock on Ewers. If he’s healthy tomorrow, he probably gives us the best chance to win (in realsville). Take a snap-shot. We have 3 QBs on our roster that will suit up in the NFL someday.

the linebackers looked about two yards deeper pre snap and early in the game the DBs were ten yards deep at most, but later in the game they looked like they returned to the PK prevent look and gave up chunk passes underneath, which tells me they dont have the safeties with closing speed and are terrified of getting beat deep, but from a BYU perspective Kedon Slovis showed he is horrible throwing over the middle

Im still scratching my head how KSU hangs 41 on Houston

you had me until the last two lines...Sark absolutely loves QE end of story...but IMO he called a better game today because QE wasn't in the game and he didnt try to get to slick with the ball

Not worth discussing the last line

I do think we can claim the title as DBU

There is no reason a team as talented as Texas to be as piss-poor in the red zone as they are. I got a different vibe in this game. The game wasnt in doubt and an extra three points wasnt an issue so why not work on goal line issues; if so, then ok, whatever

It's too easy to say so-and-so did not execute his block or it would have been a touchdown. OF COURSE if the play failed it was due to poor execution; EVERY play that fails is because of bad execution.

Every team now days seems to strugle in red zone or short yardage plays. Defence is shooting the gaps and tackling behind the line of scrimage. Off. cords. are going to make changes to meet this. To me I remember hat a coach told me, Odds are better on pass plays in shotgun. And better on running plays under center. This is just common sense but now daysthat is lacking.

To me that did not improve vs BYU along with little improvemebt in defence. Red's skill set and hard running makes the wildcat work some what. But it not the answer long run. maybe another week of practice will help vs K St.

Most every young QB makes ill advised throws. Ewers did his first year. Experence is what improves all positions in football. As I said eariler I thought Maalik did ok after a couple of series. Not much help from OL to start andplay callingat times did not help either.

K St. will be tough even if Ewers is back ( whitch is doubtfull) and Maalik will take a beating. Wildcats are rough on QBS.

Texaggy, always a funny read. I could be wrong but sometimes I wonder if we don’t have any aggy trolls on here.

yeppers. you seriously reduce your options and effective misdirection if not under center - that's fundamental. I like the wildcat in certain situations but the defense doesnt have to wonder what is going to happen; you either move the pile or you dont.

In my opinion, the option is the best play in football and always has been; being in the shotgun 90-100% of the time takes that away. I think an option with Red & Blue could be scary good. That being said, an effective option takes a lot of practice reps

agree. MM did better than I thought he would. He made some really good throws. His anticipation and timing is off, which is to be expected. He has to be able to anticipate and throw before the receiver is open and not double teamed. Most of his 2nd and 3rd level/depth throws were late. This comes with experience.

The target to catch ratio with Worthy had to be below 50% and that's worse than just bad. Worthy is not a possession receiver and yet they (MM) kept going to him in short yardage passes with very limited success. Matter of fact, Mitchell was FAR more productive (most yds & two TDs) even though he was targeted a lot less. Whittington not getting any touches is not even using a weapon. Like Brooks, Baxter should get some short passes as well.

Houston threw everything at Texas last week. That was a classic take KSU give the points game. I didn't think Houston would be able to get back up after last week.

Murphy will progress now that he’s receiving the bulk of the reps with the 1’s. The mistakes he made were fixable. I’m not completely happy with the game Sark Called offensively. With a new man at QB, he didn’t make it the easiest he could. On the sack fumble, why have a new qb turn his back to the defense for play action? After the fake he’s turning around to a blitz. Good thing, Murphy learned from it as the next time a play like that was called he got turned faster to see the blitz. He learned little things on the fly. And speaking of the red zone, take the points. When you have a first time starter build his confidence by putting points on the board. The opportunities to do so were in instances where Texas didn’t have a big lead. Little things. Sarks call on 4th and goal to throw short of the goal line was pure stupidity. On 4th down never throw shy of the needed yardage, Greg Davis
