Over the years, I've mentioned my cadre or posse of friends that used to work with me during college football, basketball and Red Sox broadcasts. We have, over the years, spent a great deal of time going over the more fun aspects of the college game. Recruiting, two-a-days and pre-season prognostications. I've also mentioned that two of these guys, (for better or worse :) are former coaches at ou. We've known and worked with one another going back to the 90's. So, I thought I'd ask their opinions of the Charlie Strong hire. I thought you'd appreciate hearing from some rational okies.

Alright, man, this is your chance to tell me your thoughts on the new head coach of Texas, Charlie Strong.

"Man, I think (Patterson) and the Horns just hit a stand-up triple if not a home run hire with this guy. He is no-nonsense guy focused on winning and winning championships and the absolute opposite of Mack Brown. If he brings the guys with him that have been with him nearly his entire career, that "soft" label will be coming off Texas damn quick."

Do you know him or are you acquainted with his staff or his philosophy?

"Don't know him but certainly know OF him. When he was at UF (Florida) his defense was nails and shut down the ou spread in that MNC game pretty effectively. His players love him but don't get the wrong idea. There are some who don't like playing for him because they found out the hard way that if you loaf or don't give the kind of effort he demands, you won't see the field again until you can prove that you can do it...his way. So yeah, he's very demanding but he's also very liberal in his praise for his players who tow that line."

What do you think this will mean for Texas in the short and long term?

"The scary part, for me as an ou fan is this. Patterson appears to have basically ignored the big money donors and gone out found someone who believes in his philosophy and direction for the program From everything you've told me from your source inside that committee, it seems that there couldn't be a more diametrically opposite coach or AD from Mack Brown and DeLoss Dodds than what they have in Strong and Patterson. So in the long-term, I think this is an excellent hire and has put a lot of folks on notice that things are changing at UT. In the short-term, a lot of Texas players are going to be shocked that the country club, good ol' boy atmosphere of Mack Brown is long gone and that expectations just rose...dramatically. Whether that translates to a specific number of wins the next two years is like our predictions...guesses based on what we know at the time. But I sure as hell wouldn't bet against them."

Do you think Texas settled?

"Hell, you know better than that. Saban is the only one who turned down Texas and then Patterson went his own way and found someone he can trust to get things done his way instead of hitching his wagon to a superstar like Saban and hoping for the best. A few years from now people are going to asking, 'how did Patterson know?' Like I said, I sure wouldn't bet against them accomplishing whatever they want to accomplish."

Okay, give me your thoughts on this Sunday morning about Texas' new coach Charlie Strong.

"I was watching this unfold this week and the one word that kept coming to mind was 'Shit!' I think Texas may have finally gotten this coaching thing right for the first time since our old pal DKR was there."

You think he's that good?

"I know he is. In (2011 and 2012) I got to do two games with Louisville and meeting him and watching his practices was something that I know you and (deleted) would love to have watched. This guy benches and lifts with his team! He doesn't blow a whistle and then talk in platitudes. He's the real deal."

Well, here's the million dollar question. What will this mean for Texas going forward?

"The days of laughing at Mack Brown when they came into the Cotton Bowl are over. No one, least of all my sooners, will be laughing at this team. I think this will be good for ou and good for the BIG XII. When ou and Texas are really good, it makes the rest of the league good and having two top tier teams vying for a spot in that 4-team playoff is going to be a lot of fun."

Next season?

"Well, going into this season, everyone pointed to 2014 as being the year the Horns would compete again. I don't know if Strong can pull that off but but Katy bar the door in 2015, 16 and beyond."

Just thought y'all would like to know. Thanks for your time.

Hook'em!

FYI, a triple is rarer and harder to hit than a home run. . ..sorry. . .one of the few baseball tidbits I know. . .good write up . . .

I had a chance to speak with an ex-OU letterman in football this afternoon. Said that he would not be surprised to see Stoops leave now that Mack is gone. Not that he is afraid of Strong, but the times have changed.

Add that to the fact that it's Cleveland that's pursuing him. He's sin Ohio guy. It's at least a possibility.

But it's "Cleveland"....graveyard of coaching careers and I know all about Belichick.
