Welcome Aboard!

I'd like to begin this one by giving a great, big shout out to all the various Longhorns websites and even people like the Dallas Morning News for turning their attention to the status and achievements of our Texas verbal pledges as the season goes on. When Aaron let me begin this a few years ago, I did it because no one else was doing it. There was a real deficiency of that information for Longhorns fans. And now, there is not. Everybody is keeping up. Bravo. We'll keep doing it anyway. :)

Lots of Doubt Left Behind in Beaumont Area, Games Cancelled
(Courtesy Beaumont Enterprise)
The District 22-5A executive committee will meet sometime this week to discuss the start of district football play, multiple coaches confirmed Monday.
Sustained flooding and other obstacles from Hurricane Harvey canceled games last week and this week and have put future games in doubt.
District 22-5A is supposed to start its eight-game district schedule next Friday.
Vidor coach Jeff Mathews estimated 80 percent of his players were evacuated last week and isn't sure when they will return.

Mathews said he lost him home to flooding and still has six feet of water in his house.
Vidor, whose week two game against Pasadena Memorial was canceled, is scheduled to open district play at home against Central.
"I don't know when we're going to be able to play football again," Mathews said. "Most of us are just trying to find a place to live."

Lumberton coach Chris Babin said 18 of the nearly 100 Raider football players he's spoken with have water damage in their homes.
Babin met with the Lumberton football team Monday for the first time since the flooding.
Lumberton was supposed to host Hamshire-Fannett on Friday in its final non-district game.
"When the committee meets, we need to make sure we're sensitive to the areas that were hit the hardest," Babin said. "I'm not sure what the solution will be but we need to be mindful of the teams that have got it the worst."
The city of Beaumont still doesn't have drinkable water, which means Ozen or Central can't practice until the issue is resolved.
Ozen coach Ed Taylor said he received water in his home.

Central coach Jeff Nelson said some of his players evacuated to places like Jasper and Lake Charles but expects most of his team back Tuesday.
Both school canceled their week two games.
Port Arthur Memorial also canceled its week two game against Westside.
"We've got to put the teams that were damaged the most first," Nelson said. "We have to think about their safety and helping them get back to a normal life."
Nederland and Port Neches-Groves are planning on playing their week two games, against Dayton and Baytown Sterling, respectively.
Nederland coach Monte Barrow said his team will have a light practice today then resume full practice Tuesday.
Barrow said Nederland was fortunate because it didn't get flooded as badly as cities like Vidor and Port Arthur.
Baytown Lee and Livingston - the other two 22-5A teams - will play their regularly scheduled games this week.
"You feel for those kids and coaches in the areas that were hardest hit," Barrow said. "We will do what we can for them."

Some Houston area teams getting back in action
(Courtesy Houston Chronicle)
Clear Lake and Clear Brook will play their week two football opponents this week, but Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs aren't as fortunate.
The Falcons will be the first CCISD team in action when they play at Texas City at 7 p.m., Friday while the Wolverines will travel to play La Porte at 7 p.m., Saturday.
"We don't have school (this) week, and we're still waiting on approval from the district to practice," Clear Falls head coach Zach Head said Friday.

"Practice would be on a voluntary basis, but it does get us back into a little bit of normalcy. Dr. (Greg) Smith and Dr. (Scott) Bockart will meet and make that decision. A lot of things go into it, foremost being safety issues."
With each of the five high schools that have football teams falling under the same umbrella, one school can't start practice before another, even though its facilities may be in better shape than the others.

"It's a district-wide thing," Head said. "Either all of us practice or none us practice."
Games canceled this week include Clear Creek-Channelview and Clear Falls-Bellaire.
Clear Springs will scrimmage Pasadena Dobie, its week two opponent.
Games on Friday, Sept. 15 will have Clear Brook at South Houston, Clear Creek at Houston Heights, Pasadena Rayburn at Clear Falls and La Porte at Clear Springs.
"We're very fortunate out here," Head said of the Clear Falls campus. "Pretty much everything seems to be OK. There is some damage in the concession stand, and some cabinets and refrigerators had some damage. Our turf is in good shape, and the school itself did not take on water."

Newcastle's addition of Casey Thompson shifts some power

NEWCASTLE — Casey Thompson went dark over the summer.

His social media accounts remained active, just not on his phone. They were deleted. The noise, he said, was too much.

“I felt like I had a lot of peace,” Thompson said.

In a whirlwind few months, the quarterback became the focus of people's ire.

He had felt like he moved past the backlash of committing to Texas, the rival of nearby Oklahoma where his father and older brother played. Then he left Southmoore and moved to Newcastle for his senior season.

It was the move felt around the state. It hurt one school and shifted some power in Class 4A, and people let Thompson know their feelings.

“For me, I'm still human,” Thompson said. “A lot of athletes don't like everything to be made a big deal. I guess that's what comes with it.

“This is not like a normal move.”

For a high-powered recruit like Thompson, nothing is the usual.

He was one of seven players — including his younger brother, Cade — to move from Southmoore after Newcastle hired away from the SaberCats offensive coordinator Jeff Brickman as head coach.

The Thompsons, who are close with Brickman, followed. So did Jacob Morris.

Their additions make Newcastle a candidate to make the most improvement after two straight losing seasons. The Racers enter the season ranked No. 10.

“Coming to a place that had gone 1-9 the last two years, I thought there would be a talent depletion, but there's not,” Brickman said. “There's enough talent here to have a chance every game, and that's all you really want.”

Brickman first got to know Thompson when Kendal Thompson burst onto the scene at Southmoore. Brickman struck an instant bond with the family.

That made moving easier for the Thompsons.

“I'd say we're close, and we're compatible,” Casey Thompson said. “We think alike as far as offense, and I really just agree with the way he does things.”

Brickman would not comment on why Thompson moved to Newcastle. Neither did Thompson. The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association cleared his eligibility after the family provided the necessary paperwork to prove a bona fide move.

Instead, Brickman said his priority is keeping Thompson focused for the season. He watched Kendal struggle with that his senior year knowing college football was on the horizon.

Early returns have shown Casey is ready for a big season.

He's added nearly 15 pounds and was clocked at a 4.50 40-yard dash, the fastest Brickman has timed Thompson.

“I feel great personally,” Casey Thompson said. “The body feels good. I think as a team we're in good shape right now. I think Coach Brickman's doing a good job changing the culture.”

And Thompson is comfortable once again, even in a new home where focus from across the state has intensified.

“This will probably be the most interesting season I've ever been a part of, even going and coaching in college and stuff,” Brickman said.

Yet another good TXHSFB write up, SHA.

Hey, I sent you a PM. Lemme know if you're interested in getting a closer look at a good game on Friday.

Oh...and a HS kid moving to follow his OC to another high school? Good grief...that's ridiculous and more than a little surprising.

This is what I love about Texas High School Football...I saw a patient yesterday in clinic, and after seeing my Texas Longhorn badge holder, he asked where in Texas I was from. Turns out he is from Cuero and was going to be home on vacation this weekend and was very excited to go to the Cuero vs Yoakum game. We probably spent about 20+ minutes just talking football lol

Happy for Desoto head coach Todd Peterman following what was an eventful off-season where the school board tried to remove him (following Coach Peterman delivering the schools first state championship) and hire back former Desoto HC Claude Mathis.  Desoto has always had a talented roster, but it took Coach Peterman to bring it all together.  Good for him and the Eagles.

A good friend of mine is working the Cuero-Yoakum game (referree). He's a big Yoakum homer.

WOW, did not know that. I knew Mathis was well liked in DeSoto (I once lived there) but didn't know they'd try something like that. You just made a Peterman fan out of me. lol

Mathis is down in Marshall I believe. Things haven't gone so well there so far this year.
