Fire Shaka Smart thread

Number of NCAA Champions games wins for their first six years as UT coach.

Tom Penders 5 wins

Rich Barnes    9 wins

Shaka Smart   0 wins
Abe Lemons won NIT in his second year when it consisted of the bottom half of the ncaa tourney today

In his 3d yr: Abe Lemons' team went to ncaa 2d round when the ncaa was only a 32 team tourney which would be the equivalent of going to the sweet 16 today

This is how Chris Beard got his start in college basketball: as a team manager at Texas.... so, which one of these guys should be the assistant head coach?

I dont know how winning one game can possibly bring in $120 mil but, hey, they deserve whatever they can make

Texas averaged 74 points a game

Tech averaged 72 points a game.

Texas shot 45% on the season

Tech shot 43% on the season

Texas 3 point shooting   35.58%

Tech 3 point shooting     35.37%

Yeah lets replace Shaka with Beard...
Chris Beard has been at Tech for 5 years.  They didn’t make the NCAA tournament in his first year and last year when they didn’t have a tournament. He’s 9-3 in the tournament. He’s never lost the first game. He has a Final Four championship game appearance, an Elite Eight, and this years team won the first game.

The stats above mean nothing. This was his rebuilding year and he won a game in the tournament. This was Shaka’s best team and he was 1 and done to Abilene Christian.

BTW, next week Chris Beard’s buyout drops to $4MM from $5MM. Just looked up his contract. It’s out there. I’m sure CDC has looked.

Thats not much of a buyout issue.

Not quite. It's 3 million for non Texas or B12 schools.  It was 16.5 last year and it goes down a million I heard So, the correct answer is 15 million to buy Beard out or something in that neighborhood.

Hiring Beard next offseason would cost the Longhorns $16.5 million.

If Beard terminates without cause in first year, he will owe Texas Tech $6 million (decreasing by $1 million each year) if he goes to a school in the Big 12 Conference or state of Texas. The amount lowers to $3 million (decreasing by $500,000 each year) if he goes to the NBA or school outside the Big 12 or the state. One notable item: the buyout number is cut in half if Kirby Hocutt is no longer employed as the athletics director for Texas Tech.

The contract doesn’t mention the University of Texas. That article does. The contract doesn’t.

You sticking with 3 million?

Beard’s latest contract with Tech has a $3 million buyout clause for schools in 49 states. If he leaves for any school in Texas or another Big 12 school, however, it will cost $6 million to get Beard out of his Texas Tech contract. You can be sure that the price doubles for a Texas school because of Beard’s connection to the University of Texas, his alma mater and first place he served as an assistant basketball coach.

One other thing. The $16.5M they were talking about was $10.5 for Shaka and $6 for Beard. This year it’s $7M for Shaka and $4M for Beard. After April 1 that is.

I said 4M. And I’m sticking to it. It’s in the contract and I can read.

Yep, I see the contract, so it's looks like 4 million. That's good.

Hopefully they are identifying who they want to look at. The carousel is already under way. OU's HC retired today, as did their women's HC

I heard Porter Moser of  is a hot name to keep an eye on. Also, Indiana is after Chris Beard who has a big buyout. However, his buyout is  bigger for one team. I will let your guess which team.

Indiana Should Hire Porter Moser—If He Wants to Leave Loyola Chicago

Tech wrote into Beard’s contract that UT has a bigger buyout?!?!
