Do You Really Think Charlie's Job Is In Jeopardy?

NTG

I have said all along that Charlie would be back with a six and six record. However a couple of our posters here have convinced me otherwise. I hope they are right. And the two I am talking about rarely agree on Anything. ðŸ˜
I also have always thought 6-6 would be good enough. And I'm still not totally convinced it still isn't.

If we don't land Herman what are your thoughts about Peterson?

I don't know how open he would be. It would certainly be a step up for him but the special needs thing may keep him there for now. We would know this of course, before approaching him about a job, IMO.

I would be excited as hell about Peterson to Texas. He's certainly turned Washington around. I watched their last game. I liked the way they play the game.

Peterson has a child that requires some special hospital for him ( I can't remember what it is ) but Seattle supposedly has a top notch place for what his kid needs. May be hard to get him.
Seattle Children's is a wonderful hospital... But so is Dell Children's. I don't think that'd be too much of a factor depending on what exactly it is

I thought this before the season. However, the Big XII looks incredibly weak this year, which doesn't help Charlie's case if he finishes 6-6. Additionally, it all depends on how we look en route to a 6-6 record. If we were 2-2 right now with a close loss to a still-highly ranked ND team and looked competitive in a loss to OSU, then I would feel better about his chances of staying. The fact is, though, that ND looks pretty bad, and our defense looked abysmal against Cal and OSU. Given how we've looked, I think a 6-2 record from here on out might be enough for him to stay, assuming we don't have any more games where we get embarrassed. Anything less and he's gone, IMO.

Ok, so everone wants Herman. I get it, I get it, so do I, but I started thinking what makes Herman different than Charlie? Is he really a can't miss hire?

A highly successful coordinator that won a title under Urban Meyer, took over a non P5 program and started beating everyone while having lesser talent on his first stint as a HC. Now he's ready to take over a blueblood program? Who does that sound like? Just sayin.... Can't afford to get the next hire wrong.
You're forgetting one thing.  Herman has done it without a Teddy Bridgewater.  Bridgewater even made Watson look good.  That, to me, seems to be more telling than anything.

UH's Greg Ward Jr. is a pretty damn good CFB quarterback...for an undersized, converted WR.

Coach 'em up? Yeah, Herman can do that.

IMO, the Gilbert incident showed Charlie has never had the full support the AD who had replaced the AD who hired Charlie

In that matter, the school president had to inject himself into a failing and embarrassing drama that was being played out in real time over the internet over one weekend.  If Fenves had not taken this extraordinary measure, there is no telling where that hot mess would have ended up.

At the time, Charlie's AD was MIA and suddenly reappeared only at the insistence his boss

Any head coach without the full support of his AD is on shaky ground

In any event, I hope the new coach search does not go like the new baseball coach search went, where agents across the country used us to raise the entire national market for NCAA baseball coaching salaries

Getting used is getting old

Juan, what do you make of Mike Perrin showing up for Charlie's press conference yesterday?

A show of support perhaps? Or something else?

Based on how this shit show has operated since the retirement of Dodds and "firing" of Mack Brown, I'd say Chuck is all but fired at this moment and regardless of season outcome, I no longer doubt that the folks that think they run the show will have the only man that makes the decision, "Fenves" listening to their tune.  His tenure has been an absolute roller coaster ride on the field and off and it's sad that he never had full support of everyone, but it is what it is.  In the end, Charlie was too loyal to TWO coaches.  Watson and Bedford.  Charlies had his chance to remove Bedford long before the same defense from 2015 too the field in 2016.  The scapegoat is now removed and the full weight of the program is on Strong' shoulders, he will buckle...IT's too much for any coach to overcome!

He will be successful and I'm thankful for the changes he has made within the program and the kids he has brought into the program.

I wouldn't be against him having a fourth year, but I highly doubt he makes it past November 25, 2016. Regardless, somebody is walking into a pretty dang good situation when it comes to this roster.

Standing at the back of the room, arms folded with a pissed off demeanor... and then he leaves before it's over.  It sure didn't look like or come across as a supporting aid.

CFS will probably be back IF  he somehow miraculously turns around this porous defense, abysmal special teams, and finishes 8-4 with no further embarrassments. That's how I see it anyway. If not, I'm ready for the Tom Herman Era to begin next year.

Mike Perrin is a fill-in puppet. He doesn't know how to run an athletic department. We should hire Oliver Luck, too, if he wants the job. Correct a previous mistake.

I'm pretty much on the same page.  I don't think 8-4 is doable and didn't before the season started.  I still feel like this is a 6-6 team and he will crumble under pressure. I don't think there is a coach out there that can/could handle what he has undeniably done to himself at this point in his tenure and be successful in their current role.

I'm all for Luck if he would leave Indianapolis.

Probably not.

If our people believe Herman is the next great CFB coach, we need to get him NOW  before it's too late.

I think he just wanted to see what Charlie had to say

Notice he ran off before it was over, to avoid any questions to him

I will continue to support Charlie as long as he is our head football coach... That being said, he may not be the coach for much longer.

I think 8-4 (although meeting preseason expectations) may not be enough to bring him back. That means 2 more losses along the way to any combo of OU, Baylor, TCU, Tech, WVU (if he loses to ISU, KU, KSU... Well.... That just wouldn't be good). I think if he loses just one to finish 9-3, he's fine. I think if he loses 2 of those to finish 8-4, then it depends on how those games were lost. If they were high scoring shootouts with continued defensive lapses, that doesn't look good. Even if we win a bunch, but we win games 50-47, not sure that would save him either. We need to win AND defense needs to improve, not just one or the other.

Tl;dr 9-3, he's coming back. 8-4 with improved defensive fundamental, no more missed tackles or blown coverages, and more turnovers, he's coming back. 8-4 with losses (or wins) coming in shootouts with bad defense and questionable management, he's gone.

Just my .02
