DGB joins OU Football Team

— Twitter API (@twitterapi) November 7, 2011

That's BS. Since I followed his recruiting, I thought his talent was on the level of Roy Williams.

If DGB doesn't contribute, I'm sure Stoops will kick him off the team. Stoops can say then he gave the guy a second chance and he blew it. If DGB plays up to his ability which is on an all American level, then OU will put up anything he does as long it doesn't get out in the media.

If DBG can help OU beat Texas, then he sit in meetings eating beans and farting up a storm.

Everything you said may turn out to be true.  I'm just not thrilled the Sooners adding a wide receiver with his talent.
You may be right - he may be the principle reason that Texas loses to OU.  But I don't care.  He is 6'5", 240 lbs. and the coward and bully beat up a woman.  That makes him equivalent to, or worse than, a rapist, in my book.

The only thing lower than this is a pedophile - the worst form of scum to ever walk the face of the earth.

It says something about OU and Stoops that they would sell out their morals and principles just to win a f****ing football game.  Telling everyone that the first thing he does wrong, he is gone, does not excuse their  blatent and sick desire to win a football game at any cost.

F OU, F Stoops and, most of all, F DGB!

Forgive me, everyone, but I am getting madder as I type this.

I'm off.

Edit:  It turns out I was wrong.  He didn't beat up his GF in the classic sense, he just drug her out of the door by her neck and pushed her roommate down 4 steps of stairs.  Therefore, the DGB defenders are right - he is really just a misunderstood lad that needs a little love and a hug now and then.  Good God!

It's not my opinion, just sharing a tweet from an OU beat writer from the Tulsa World.

I don't think DGB ever plays a down for OU if he doesn't play in 2014.  Won't he be eligible for the NFL Draft next spring?

Sorry J.B. my BS comment was directed to the OU PR person talking tough. It was not directed at your post. Thanks for posting it.

Probably won't ever play a down. Can't see how the NCAA would give him a waiver to play this year. The chances of DGB making it a year without getting in trouble is pretty small based on his history.
That is my take on the situation. He certainly has no reason for a hardship waiver. So, he's got one year to spend looking for things to do. This kid couldn't keep his nose clean when he was active. How is he going to do it for a full 14 months while not playing?

Hook 'em!

Well that's definitely a shock. OU is going to apply for the waiver and I'm not sure if they wouldn't grant it. He is a first round talent easily. He wants to go to the NFL and it would make business sense to grant him immediate eligibility.

AD on Green-Beckham to OU: 'I'm absolutely shocked by it'

We could be looking at a seminal moment in college football, bigger than anything expansion or realignment or paying players could ever bring.

There’s a lawsuit on the horizon in college sports, one more destructive than anyone can imagine. And when Oklahoma decided to add Dorial Green-Beckham to its roster Thursday afternoon, it became the next program spinning the roulette wheel with its head firmly planted in the sand.

“I’m absolutely shocked by it,†one Power 5 athletic director texted me this afternoon. “That’s a decision you simply can’t make.â€

Look, I have nothing against DGB, or Oklahoma, or second (or fourth in this instance) chances. The problem I have is if Green-Beckham does the unthinkable — certainly not out of the ordinary, given his history at Missouri — and physically attacks a student, Oklahoma is on the hook for what could be a monumental lawsuit.

God forbid something like that happens, but can’t we all see the risk every single program takes when it gives another chance to another wayward player accused of physically harming another person — all in the name of winning games? I mean, helping out a young man.

LSU did the same thing last year when coach Les Miles allowed his team to “vote†on the return of tailback Jeremy Hill after he hit a man in the head outside a bar.

Ohio State took the same chance last year when it allowed tailback Carlos Hyde back on the field after he slapped a woman at a club.

Florida did the same thing last year after linebacker Antonio Morrison punched a bouncer at a nightclub.

Why am I the only who can see if any of those three hit someone again, it’s a massive lawsuit waiting to happen? These universities knew these players were a danger to the university community, yet they allowed them to continue to play and go to school — and put others in the university community in harm’s way.

That’s Risk Management 101, people. Every trial attorney on the planet would line up to argue that guaranteed winner that would financially and publicly destroy not only a program, but a university.

Yet here we are again, with another program taking another huge risk. For what, I ask? To win games?

We’re so consumed by the pay-for-play lunacy and image likeness argument that we continue to ignore the bigger problems facing the sport: academic fraud and player behavior.

We’re not even three months from Green-Beckham getting kicked off the Missouri team, and already Oklahoma has swooped in to save the day. It’s easy to justify it all.

Green-Beckham wasn’t charged with burglary — where he allegedly pushed a woman down stairs — because the victim refused to press charges for fear of retaliation. Why not give him another chance, right?

MORE: Read the police report

Oklahoma now has the best wide receiver in the game on its roster, and wouldn’t you know it, according to various reports, the Sooners will try to petition the NCAA to allow Green-Beckham to avoid transfer rules and play immediately this fall.

And move the sport one step closer to that seminal moment.

I don't think it's lunacy to have pay for play but yes College football and football itself is dealing with issues that are going to dictate it's future with concussions and the brain damage that goes along with it. Yes the potential for a lawsuit is there with DGB but I think he is smart enough to understand that he can't screw up anymore. So the risk is worth the reward.

They took the same risk with a douche bag named Dusty Dvorachek or something like that. He almost killed a man and not only was allowed back on the team but given the redshirt year for alcoholism.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The acceptance...with open arms....of Dorial Green- Beckham onto the Oklahoma Sooner football team...

Actually, I don't have the words.  First arrest, for having pot?  Okay, UT players have been busted for the same.  Not that big a deal.  Second time arrested, for possession and intention to distribute?  Should have been kicked off the team then.  And then the assault against an 18 year old girl...no conviction because she wouldn't testify. Finally kicked off the team after that..

And then OU welcomes him with open arms?  Because he's a great receiver and athlete (which he is) and might help OU win football games?

That is, as they say, beyond the pale.  I attended UT in the 70s and we have always claimed OU was of low moral standard and would cheat or do anything to win, but I loved our football rivalry with them nonetheless.  Two schools with great college football tradition.  But with OU taking on DGB with open arms, despite the fact he is a pure THUG?

Again, I don't have the words to accurately describe just how I regard Bob Stoops and the University of Oklahoma.  Undeniably, an all time low for them. And that's saying something for them.

Actually, I HAVE the words to describe Bob Stoops and the University of Oklahoma...but they are ugly and I don't like to post ugly things on this site.

Good post Etex. I also was at ut in the 70s and beating that scumbag switzer was always sweet. Looks like stoops is walking the ou-walk.

I was listening to a yahoo podcast with a guy from Sooner Scoop. He said they're hoping the hardship will be approved because the woman didn't press charges. The Sooner coaches think they have a good chance.  I always thought the hardship rule was for a kid that went out of state and one of his parents become sick, then he could transfer to a school close to home.

In this case it's a hardship for DBG to sit out a year because he might get in trouble again and that could hurt his NFL contract. I guess it must be a traumatic hardship to beat up a woman, I wouldn't know.  If the NCAA allows DBG to play right away then they're a bigger joke than I thought.

Green-Beckham transfer to Oklahoma makes one wonder -- about Oklahoma

img24609882.jpg

The Dorial Green-Beckham situation demands a reaction.

Outrage? Yup. Dumbfounded disbelief? That too.

Might as well forget reasoned discourse.

DGB's transfer to Oklahoma last week is one of those divisive issues made for this dead spot in the offseason. It's July. Media days begin next week. Camps open in less than a month. The airwaves are starved for topics. Morality is involved. Right. Wrong. NCAA transfer rules.

You must have an opinion, and it's probably not a favorable one of Missouri's disgraced receiver going to the Sooners. In the moment the default setting is Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma administration getting ripped for accepting Mizzou's disgraced star.

They're the ones who signed off on DGB three months after he appeared in a disturbing police report. They're also the ones who went to great lengths to vet the receiver. They found a kid who is in good academic standing. They found an athlete recommended by Missouri coaches. Good kid, they were told, perhaps not mature enough for all the hype.

In his two years at Missouri, Green-Beckham was arrested twice for marijuana-related issues and was the subject of a burglary investigation. In that last instance, that police report stated he allegedly shoved a woman down a flight of stairs.

Missouri's Gary Pinkel threw DGB off the team April 12.

OU's decision to take him can't be fully evaluated until DGB makes it out of Norman without further disgrace.

A risk? You bet. No matter how you cut this, DGB needs OU more than OU needs DGB. The Sooners would be a Big 12 title favorite with or without the receiver. Sure, they're a bit thin at wideout. That makes this nothing more than a curious business arrangement: DGB needs a bridge to the NFL Draft. Oklahoma needs a quality pass-catcher.

Two years ago the kid was perhaps the nation's No. 1 recruit, no doubt the most-hyped signee in Missouri history. Seven months ago he was arguably the best player on the field at the SEC championship game.

Take all of it together and DGB got an upgrade, a do over -- on the field, in his life. He's joining a top-five program, perhaps right away if OU and Green-Beckham are granted a transfer waiver.

That's a heck of a bounce back.

Back to that business arrangement. The more logical play on DGB's part would have been to drop down to FCS, play a season and head for the NFL. At one point, Eastern Illinois was reported as a possible landing spot.

As things stand now, OU has to know DGB would be eligible for next year's draft -- even if he never sets foot on Owen Field. That wouldn't help either party. If he heads for the 2015 draft, DGB wouldn't have played for 16 months.

There will be those disturbed with the police report's allegations of Green-Beckham assaulting a woman. But no charges were filed in any of the incidents. Police described Green-Beckham's girlfriend in April as being "extremely uncooperative" with police.

"I didn't see or hear anything," Samantha Bass is quoted as saying.

Police did report a hole in drywall where the Green-Beckham had shoved the door handle when entering the apartment, reportedly seeking the girlfriend at 2:30 a.m. Police did report that the woman who Green-Beckham allegedly shoved had "slight bruising and swelling of her right wrist and limited movement of her fingers on her right hand."

She did not require medical attention. Again, no charges were filed.

"... Football really is all he [Green-Beckham] has going for him and pressing charges would ruin it for him completely," the report said quoting a Bass text.

DGB might deserve a second chance, but getting one at OU seems strange. Bob Stoops has an admirable disciplinary record. This is the same coach who booted his starting quarterback off the team a month before the 2006 season.

Ryan Broyles was suspended for a year after being charged with stealing gas from a pump. He became one of Oklahoma's all-time great receivers. Star defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek was first kicked off the team then reinstated in 2005. Former five-star recruit Trey Metoyer was kicked off the team in October.

But those were all Sooners. Green-Beckham is an import, an outsider. Stoops has potentially invited trouble. However, there was an existing relationship from recruiting. At the time, Missouri beat out Arkansas and Oklahoma for DGB's services. The kid has to have a certain comfort level in Norman. Assistant Jay Norvell happily tweeted a picture with the program's new prize.

OU's due diligence included scrutiny from AD Joe Castiglione, OU president David Boren and school attorneys. During that process, the school did not attempt to contact the woman who was allegedly shoved. Should it have done so?

There is high confidence, according to a source, that no charges will be filed in the April incident. Read the entire 19-page police report. Police and a domestic violence investigator did not get much cooperation from key witnesses.

Meanwhile, at his new school, Green-Beckham will be on a zero-tolerance policy. Counseling will be made available.

It is a transfer that still demands a reaction. It isn't often a No. 1 recruit becomes available on the open market. No doubt, several schools of OU's caliber had reservations about DGB's character.

Maybe it boils down to the obvious: OU wouldn't be going to these lengths for a walk-on. Dorial Green-Beckham is really good and was really available.

When it comes to chasing a Big 12 title -- and more -- perhaps that's all that matters
