Debate - Pros and Cons - Nick Saban

Saban is arguably the greatest college coach in history. If he wins another title this year I don't think it would even be an argument. When you're one of the crown jewel programs in the country you go after the best and make them tell you no.

That said, how much longer is Saban going to coach? Why would he leave what he's built at Alabama? I realize that he's always been a guy looking for another challenge, but at 62 years old is he going to be up for another challenge? He's always complained about spread up-tempo offenses and how would he react moving to the Big 12 where those types of offenses are everywhere.

In the end, Saban would be the biggest homerun because there would be a complete culture change, but it wouldn't require much for him in regards to recruiting because everyone already wants to play for him and recruiting to a place like Texas would be a cakewalk.

Pros:

-Recruiting

-Intensity

-Systematic

-Accountability

-Development

-Recrui oh.

-LHN on DirecTV!!

-Very, VERY high standards for team/players

Cons:

-"selling soul/buying championships" argument (a pride thing for me)

-how much gas is left in the tank?

-Not too familiar with spread offenses (dominant in TX HS football)

-....that's really all I got

Pros: Our team would be full of 4/5* and we would actually have a coaching staff that can develop them. We would once again be stocking the NFL with studs in the 1st 3 rounds.

We would NEVER be confused w/ SOFT again.

No Entitlement Mentality EVER. You EARN your position.

Our 2nd team would be ranked in the top 15.

Con: I'll come back and edit when I think of ONE.

Playing devil's advocate here. What happens if Colt does not get hurt? I think we win that game. If Gideon makes the interception against TT and we win that game and play for national championship. Who has better legacy Mack or Saban?

So we win the 05, 08, 09 title. Saban wins 03, 11, 12. Mack goes down as one of the great coaches of all time, gets his name next to DKR on the stadium. Overall they would be in the same realm, both hall of fame coaches.

And we would be again looking for a new HC in October of 2013 bc Will Muschamp just proved to all of us that he is a 22-14 (or something like that) head coach.

Saban would be a great coach for the "Win Now" mentality, but he wouldn't provide much for long term. Maybe I am a minority in this thought, I would rather suffer through another sub par season or two now since we are already used to it and have a chance to be near the peak of the mountain long term with a coach who may last here 15+ years.

That being said...

If he really does end up here and the ink dries on that coaching contract, I will be more than thrilled.

To me he would just be a hired gun. I don't want to pay any coach 8 to 10 million per year. I think it makes us look bad and I don't think we need to go to that extreme. We can find a really good coach for less, and a coach who will be here longer than he will. I won't complain if we get him but the money thing really bothers me.

Winning championships is all I really care about. If hiring Saban and looking bad equals titles I don't care. People hate Texas whether we are winning or losing so we might as well be winning, right?

Hiring Saban even if it is short term is beneficial because the next coach will likely have his fingerprints all over it and will be cut from the same cloth!

I keep hearing this "buying a championship" thing.

Isnt that what every premier football school tries to do?

Pretty much.

For me, I'd prefer Urban Meyer.

Hook'em!

I used to think the same thing, them I remembered that he also coached at LSU. He coached there a few years and took them to a title and them left. LSU has remained a top program long after Saban left despite having a goof ball as a coach. Ideally I'd like to kick ass with someone like Fitzgerald from Northwestern, but a few seasons with Saban would be fun.

This is exactly the way I think. I'd rather have Saban for 5-7 years and let him build things back up, win a title or two and then move on to where we get new blood to pick up right where he left off. One of the biggest issues we are facing right now is the fact that Mack has been here so long and his act has gotten pretty stale. Coaches don't have extremely long shelf lives. 10 years is almost the max for a successful coach these days. Getting Saban here and turning this thing around and making it a monster would be perfect. Then his replacement could come in and continue what he built as long as we don't hire a grass eating moron like Miles.

agree with all of this. has kind of a 'hired gun' feel to it. and he's 62. what's he got... 5 years? we're going to have to do it again soon. ideally i'd want the next nick saban. just don't know who that is.

Pros:

1. we retain and expand on all current recruits

2. he wins conference titles

3. he wins national championships

4. his 2nd teams beat most of the countries 1st teams

Cons:

1. he will cost a ton

2. it aint my money
