Crossfire with McPhaul - 02/26/2014

We got Jordan Stevenson, who's faster than Jones. RJII is a great prospect and a good kid but I don't get the hard-on for him on all the fan boards. Unless Stevenson decommits, Jones is redundant. We have an excellent shot at both Warren and Guice. That would be a helluva haul.LetsRide
First, let's get it out of the way that I don't have a hard-on for him :) I have seen him play in person and was extremely impressed and I'm sure that I would be impressed if I had seen the others. They're all good and I honestly don't know which of them is better than the other, etc. But When a kid is this good, as evidenced by his offers, you offer. And besides, there's just no way that we can say at this point that we have an excellent shot at getting anyone. That is way, way premature. If the two you mentioned go elsewhere and we end up with just Stevenson that would NOT be a helluva haul. How many times have we had an excellent shot at getting someone and we didn't? Bottom line, we need to have our ass covered at every position.

Has Darrell Wyatt ended up somewhere?
Unfortunately Daryl has been the runner-up for the positions he has interviewed for.

I was told that Strong considered hiring Daryl but, the two did not hit it off on a personal basis.

That's two bad because both Strong and Wyatt have similar philosophies.

I guess I disagree. A lot of things happen that can't be proven and this is a message board and not a court of law so it's fair game to point out the obvious even if it can't be 'backed up'
Well stated. What I don't want to see is a Longhorn board turning into paranoia like TexAgs. We are better than that.

Suffice it to say, there are some very, VERY smart people - within and without the UT organization. Do you honestly believe they will allow even the whisper of actual cheating to continue without reacting to it? Particularly Texas A&M?

Trust that things are happening and bide your time.

Meanwhile, considering there is no public proof, lets not get all aggy over it.

Two things stand out to me. Number 1 is the NCAA is a total joke. They will not even try to stop the cheating. and secondly no way will I let bygones with mack Brown. So he threatened to sue if any Sexton client was used? First time I recall hearing that. No way, no how should Mack Brown have had any influence on who UT hired period. What little respect I had left for Mack Brown just went out the window. He is a little man with a little mind.
Doug,
The other part of that equation is Jamail threatened the hold back his 50 million donation if Saban was hired. The whole scene could have gotten very ugly and made Texas a laughing stock of college football.

The way Patterson handled it was probably the best for Texas.
I agree with both opinions here. Based on what I've read, Mack drove this threat-of-suit bus. Jamail just made Mack's wishes come true. I'm glad Mack is gone; when put to fire, he showed his true colors.

That being said, I am completely happy with both Patterson and Strong as hires and am pleased with what both have been doing and plan to do in the future. Let's Hook 'em!!

An analogy...

Your senior manager (Wallace) and VP (Hicks) meet with a recruiter (Sexton) to discuss whether a candidate is interested in your job, while you are still in your position.

This was setup to end badly...both sides.

With the report of SEC paying players does anyone else feel like they've taken crazy pills? What in tarnation is goin on?

Bummer - hope he finds another opportunity soon. Enjoyed reading his bio growing up in Mexia if I recall.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the Strong hire but it really sticks in my craw that UT's administrators let the ramblings of a single donor have this much influence in decision that would have long-term ramifications on the future of the football program. Joe Jamail isn't the only BMD at UT. No single individual's wishes should be allowed to supercede those of the majority. That goes double for an individual who may not even be alive by the start of the 14' season. Last time I checked, money was not an issue at UT and wouldn't be even without Joe's precious thirty pieces of silver. It's the principle of the thing.

In your OP, you seemed to indicate something fishy was going on because we're not all over RJII. I don't think there's anything going on behind the scenes. Just the coaches feel they have the "scatback" type RB already in the fold.

Of our 65 offers currently outstanding, 9 are to RBs. We're definitely not done at the postition. I'll trust the coaches to make the call.

The whole "Ags are paying recruits" rumor needs to stop unless people can back it up with actual info.
Sorry hit like on wrong post. I hope people come forward with proof and catch the cheaters

In an attempt to be positive, I will say that without the threat of said lawsuit there would be no Coach Strong at Texas and I am loving me some Coach Strong. Thanks, Mack.

And yes, McPhaul, you buried the lead story. Although many inside may have known about the MBTF and JJ suit and JJ's threat to yank the $50,000,000.00, I had never heard this tidbit. I wager that most had not heard it until they read this issue of Crossfire.

McPhaul, thank you for allowing us to submit questions and for another quality Crossfire.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that I thought anything fishy was going on. I couldn't even tell you who the 9 RB's are that we have offered but I just have a hard time believing that all 9 of them are better than RJ. It just doesn't make sense just like the situation with the 2016 wide receiver that Texas pulled the offer from doesn't.

Let me tell you something. The Hornsports members Q & A is always my favorite part.

IMO, the Q & A allows our members to get the scoop they are looking for.

I did not intentionally bury that part. As a matter of fact it really is a subject I would like to move on from.

Who are the 9 2015 RB's that have been offered?

I looked over on 247 at RB recruiting and, according to them, we have offered 7 2015 RB's. Four of them have committed and Stevenson is the only one to Texas. The uncommitted RB's three are Guice, Warren, and Hasty and the 247 crystal ball predictions don't show Texas in the lead for any of them. Their predictions are showing Texas with a slim chance at Warren and little or no chance with Guice and Hasty.

We've also offered Soso Jamabo and Jacques Patrick. Texas has a very good shot at landing Chris Warren. The so-called Crystal Ball is a little hazy this far out. I don't put much stock in it at this point.

You're right. 247 had them listed under Athlete. They show Texas leading for Jamabo and basically little or not chance with Patrick. A lot can happen in the 11 months.

Darrell, great read once again. You had a question in the first section that was about whether Mack has been told to keep quiet in order to keep receiving his severance/buyout checks. However, it didn't show what the answer was from your source. Can you let us know what your source said about this?
