Crossfire update (Unfriended)

I am wondering why there has not been some sort of posting of thoughts by staff regarding the "open to the public" practice on Sunday.

Armadillo Slim and the bunts refers to his disdain for the small ball approach our Horns baseball team uses. . .

While I think the staff has made a large mistake which will needlessly cost them business. . . .I like the site and the community. . .

Face it, no one is going to top 24/7 for pure info. . . .nor is anyone every going to top the 800 lb gorrilla that is OB ..

What we can do is blend content with community. . . many of us migrated over here from a private board Matt and others ran and this very much has the feel of that board. . . .

Why not carve out a niche where  can discuss Horn sports, where we can create our own niche. . . just my view from the Cheap Seats.. .
i think you nailed it. Clearly, there's going to be more content on other sites and that's OK. But the community is more pleasant here than OB for sure (never done 24/7 or IT so can't comment on those). Just like i read the WSJ and the Boerne Star...not all outlets are created equal and they don't have to be. Each can serve a niche.
I guess at the end of the day, enjoy the best of each you care to enjoy and move on.

Really like this community but not much content recently.

I'd let my OB subscription lapse but have renewed to catch up. And even it's not up to

the prior standards when Chip was on board.

Hoping for more "insider" info this football season. That's why I thought this site would

be different.

What the H*** is going on.....I am doing real life situations and just got out of the Hospital again.  This site is great and I love it  and  I love all you guys.

Lets Party.   :P

Topstarr, it is definitely getting curiouser and curiouser around here.  I think we need to get our meds seriously adjusted.

I fear we will need to temper expectations. . ..there were plenty of sources under Mack.

CFS runs a tight ship, we will not have as much access to "inside info" simply because CFS doesn't want it out. . . another reason he surrounded himself with people loyal to him.

Of course that is going to be true of every site. . .

Eventually there will be more inside sources under Strong, no matter what he wants out or not, it just takes time. It's a matter of those seeking a scoop finding the right people to build rapport with...and finding that perfect bottle of scotch to send them during the holidays never hurts.

I have held off posting this for several days because I didn't want to come off as too negative.  But with the infrequency with which I post, I doubt any member here will take this for more than it is---one person's opinion.

I have never paid to be a member of a forum.  That's not to say that I would not.  Forums are valuable information resources.  Because of them, I can make good beer at home and winterize my boat among other things.  That has value.  But in each of those instances, I have contributed as much information as I have taken away, or at least gotten close.

I first came to Hornsports during the "Mack Brown about to get his butt fired and who's our new coach going to be" period.  It was an interesting time with lots of scoops, speculation, chasing tail numbers on planes, and the like.  The community was polite and welcoming.  But most importantly, it was very active.  Ultimately, I didn't learn anything factual that I wouldn't have learned from watching the news, i.e., Mack Brown fired, Charlie Strong hired, Red McCombs insulting.  But the site was active and free of charge.

Later, when the paywall went up, it was initially a bit broader, and I was a bit put off by it.  Not that the owners aren't entitled to be paid for their work product.  But, it started off free, has plenty of ads on it, and I was used to the way things were.  As the premium content became less broad, I returned to read the free stuff and contribute when I had something to contribute.  As for inside information, I determined that, just like Belmont, premium sites have leaks, too, and I was content letting information trickle out of the paid world to the free world over time.  As for analysis, Scipio Tex tends to provide enough of that.  As for humor and general comradery, well, that thends to be free here.

So why am I writing this?  Because I think that what will make or break this site is its activity level.  Yes, a pleasant community is critical to this, but that aside, no matter the numbers, if members, paid or otherwise, aren't posting regularly, I'm less likely to login more than once per day.  And, if I'm a premium subscriber, even if it's only $5 per month, I'm going to want regularly updated content or I'm wondering what I'm paying for.  But if there's lots of activity, it at least keeps me interested.

So, I'm rambling.  And I may not have much of a point.  Maybe the site jumped the gun on charging for subscriptions before its identity was solidified.  Maybe it can still take a step back and collect a subscription during the process.  I wish you all the best with that model, even though I haven't subscribed and probably won't subscribe.  And maybe the activity level will pick up when the season gets underway.  But one way or another, a high activity level needs to be a constant, or interests will wane.

Carry on.

Yes, activity level is a very critical issue on this forum ... I am quickly running out of the folks that I was told to irritate when I came here.  ;)

Bud, if you're going to irritate people, you're going to have to stop being such a nice guy. FYI. lol
