Congrats Texas Basketball

Guess that's why they call it coach of the year and not coach of the last 3 years. I hear what you are saying. I think Rick earned one more year, but like Mack, Rick was the one who created the situation for the Hoops program to be in the past 3 years so we'll see if he coaches his way up or out of a job. Getting Turner would be awesome, but we better find some legitimate threats from the outside or we'll have the same issues next season. Watching teams completely sag off off Holland and Taylor and pretty much making it 3 on 5 got very frustrating.
In the last game, I thought Taylor showed a really touch on longer range shots. Until that point, he had been too unselfish. TJ showed the same tendency to focus on distributing, rather than shooting, his first year. I think another year, under this staff, will do wonders for this team.

Of course, many of you know much more about basketball than I do, and I've not been able to see much of the team this year due to LHN. Hoping to change that soon with DISH.

Hook 'em!

I agree Taylor needs to be more selfish/aggressive. When he gets into the paint, good things happen.

Finding a replacement is not my problem. I was just pointing out the only reason Barnes is being anointed this season is because of his miserable failures in the previous two seasons.
Let this sink in. Texas has 42 losses the past three seasons and Barnes is coach of the year?

It seems basketball is judged differently than football in Austin. I can make a hell of a lot better case for retaining Mack Brown than Barnes.
Basketball is and has always been judged by lower standards than football. This isn't new. What was our average home attendance this past season at the Drum?

As Mack says, "It is what it is"

Holland may not be quite the defender that some seem to think, but it seems to me that he was our first option to defend our opponents best guard for most of the year - and he has done a pretty good job as best I can see. I think people tend to throw out cliche statements like "lock down defender" and they tend to stick. I have probably used that statement meaning only that his strength is his defense and he is pretty good at it. You are right, LegendaryHorn, Holland does not bring much the to the half court offense. He is, however, pretty good at creating on the break. For discussions sake, who is to say that he cannot develop his half court offense in his remaining two years here?
I agree with you, LegendaryHorn, in that I see no reason why Croaker can't find minutes here. I do not remember where I saw the article but later in the season, I read about how it was hoped that they would see a defensive jump by him by next year and that the coaches were intrigued by his athletic ability and his offensive potential. With regards to his child, I have not read anywhere that he was wanting to go back home - not that it hasn't been said by some reputable source somewhere. Just all of a sudden, I started seeing posts stating it as a known or at least "near" fact that he was probably leaving. I was just wondering whether there was any substance to these statements. Heck, player's children and the children's mothers and the player's mothers move to where the young man goes to school all the time. Who is to say that that will not happen in Croaker's case rather than his going back to Florida? I agree with utisdabomb12, in that I would really like to see us have some taller options on the wing. Even though Croaker is not 6'-6", I think that his athleticism and leaping ability give him a presence bigger than the 6'-2" at which he is listed. If that is the case, and Croaker can make a "leap forward" next year, he, Walker, Yancy at 6'-3" 200 lb, Barnett, and our other guards can give us some mix and match possibilities on the exterior that will rival the mix and match possibilities that we seem to have in the making for the forecourt.

Come to think of it Texas has never had as much height at guard as we may have next year. Royal Ivey was 6'-4", Lance Blanks was 6'-4", Terrence Rencher was 6'-3", Cory Joseph was 6'-3", Reggie Freeman was 6'-6", and Kris Clack was only 6'-5" and he could out leap all of them. But, we usually only had one of them at a time. Of course, I did not list players that played the wing but were primarily small or combo forwards.
I'll admit I'm probably a little overly pessimistic with regard to Holland and I'm high on Croaker more because of his potential than consistent production. I've got no way of knowing which guy will continue to develop, what rate they'll develop, etc. However, I see a lesser Justin Mason(right now) when I watch Holland. The big difference is Mason had some ability to create and even played PG for stretches. I get that Barnes saw a Mason/Royal type glue guy in Holland and that was a big reason he likes him. He's a classic Barnes-type guy.

My main reasoning in assuming Croaker is gone is due to him having a kid. I hadn't seen anything about him not being happy or being mad about playing time(although I would think he's frustrated) until last night. Someone, claiming to be close with Croaker, said after the WVU game(assuming Big 12 tourney) he wasn't happy about playing time and wasn't happy with Barnes. Don't know how accurate it is but I wouldn't be surprised if he is frustrated with his playing time. I'd hope he is, if he wasn't I don't think we'd want him on the team. Then there was the tweet after the game that seemed like he intends to stay. Will be something to watch for sure.

That said, I get why Croaker didn't play much this year. His shot selection wasn't great. He was 39-109 from the field, 22-74 from 3, 17-35 inside the arc. If I'm Barnes/whoever I'm pointing that to him and saying ATTACK THE BASKET. His defense and effort on the glass were also horrible to average at best. Defensively his positioning wasn't great and he would get very jumpy at times, often jumping out of position. And his effort rebounding was just inconsistent. If he puts it together though he will be fun to watch.

The decision of Turner looms but either way this will be a big off-season with most of the focus being on the guards. Improved shooting and ball handling could lead to having a special guard rotation. Texas will have a great PG again, and guards with size, length and athleticism(Holland: 6-2, Yancy: 6-3, Walker: 6-5, Croaker: 6-3).

Yep, what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I guess when I am thinking of Holland I am thinking about the so fay unrealized possibilities for him. I was thinking about Mason in my previous post, but did not mention him because when I think of him, I reflexively think of how his time at Texas ended rather than earlier in his time here when he was just nails Funny how one's perspective can make you for get part of what was and rather focus on what has not yet come to be. Whatever happens with Holland and Croaker, it does make for interesting discussion. Sometimes, when people are critical of players like Holland and Felix, I think that they forget that were both pressed into playing early because they had to play. When I think of that, I think of how that early playing time can help make them into invaluable role players in the future.

Croaker reminds me a bit of Kris Clack. Granted, Clack is taller and may well have had a better vertical leap than Croaker, but Clack was very raw when he first came to Texas. Clack, like Travis Mayes, was an undersized post player in high school. Both had to learn to play the perimeter at Texas. Of course Clack was a reasonably sized skywalker at small forward for Texas, and Mayes was an undersized shooting guard who could also put in spot duty at the point if need be. Probably neither benefited from playing AAU ball like today's players do. I picture ion my mind's eye, that Croaker has the potential to be a hybrid - somewhere in between Clack and Mayes in size and physical ability, but having come to Texas already with a better skill set out of high school for where he could eventually be for Texas. Only time will tell the true tale, but that is why I really do not want to lose him.

An interesting aside on Clack. I have always had season tickets on a diagonal of of the end line upstairs behind the visitors bench - for the past few years on the first row upstairs. It is a great vantage point for watching games and one reason why I am in no hurry to see the Special Events Center torn down. ;) In Clack's last year here, Clack went up high for a lob pass, turned away from the back board. As he gathered in the ball and turned to stuff the ball in the basket, he smacked the side of his punkin haid upside the backboard with the point of contact at least a foot above the bottom of the back board - AND, he had come down considerably from the peak of the arc of the trajectory of his leap. I do not think I have seen anybody at Texas with that kind of athleticism, except for maybe Maurice Evans. I looked at quite a bit of video on Croaker when he was recruited last year, and while the jury is still out on whether he has that kind of skywalker athleticism, he never the less, to me at least, appears to possess athleticism that is in the upper echelon. So, I would like to see him stay here and be successful.

This discussion does not even touch on the possibilities My optimistic mind's eye sees in potential of players like Kendall Yancy and Martez Walker - not to mention, Isaiah Taylor. I do not pretend to know much about basketball. I just like it and get excited thinking about it - at least the Longhorn variety of it. So with that caveat, I just see that, with the possibility of the coming of Myles Turner, next year we have the possibility of perhaps the deepest and best basketball team in the history of Texas basketball. And, dadgummit! I do not want anything interfering with that possibility! So, everybody! Git in line, and do your part! "Respect my authoritah!" ;)

Croaker was a big disappointment, imo. maybe it was the baby and his mind's being with his family, but he got worse unlike Walker and Yancy. he jacked up threes a lot like the first year Hamilton did and started turning the ball over. I hope he comes back and dedicates himself to improving like Ridley did, but if his GF and baby are not moving here, I'll bet he goes back home.

Thought I would give this thread a bump. Here is good read that is worthy of some discussion while we are waiting for some news on Myles Turner. Of course, the latest is that Joel Embiid has decided to leave Kansas for the NBA ... the thot plickens!

Meanwhile, over at Barking Carnival, Bitterwhiteguy posted an article entitled, A Fool's Errand: Texas-Sized Expectations. He uses some comparative statistics to make a case regarding where reasonable performance expectations should be for Texas men's basketball. To quote Bitterwhiteguy, "The attempt here is to understand where Texas is as a program currently, where it ranks relative to other programs in the country, and where it should be aiming in the next few years." Enjoy!

Also, jc25 posted this article entitled, 2013-14 Texas Longhorns Basketball Post-Mortem. One of the best discussions of the past season that I have read. In addition to the article, be sure and read the comments afterwards. Once you get past all of the BC bloggers congratulating each other at the top of the comments, there are some insightful thoughts proffered further down.
