The drama fans are going through right now concerning whether or not defensive line coach Chris Rumph is headed to the University of Florida is something UT fans are likely gonna have to get used to.  That is IF Charlie Strong's as successful as I think he's gonna be over the next few years at UT.

Success breeds success.  Members of coaching staffs at winning programs have opportunities every year, opportunities to move up and become coordinators, move on to perceived better coaching stops (NOT that there are any of those compared to UT.), and in a very few cases, even move up to become head coaches.  Charlie Strong knows this, and I'm sure that like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and a handful of other experienced and successful head coaches, Strong keeps an updated list of possible replacement coaches for ones he loses.

It's tough on those players who commit more to a coach than a school, but UT football players should know that if Coach Strong has to replace his defensive line coach, he'll bring in another quality DL coach and teacher, and likely, one who can recruit to boot.

I don't want to see Rumph leave...he's one of my favorite coaches on staff and I'm still holding out some hope that he decides to stay in Austin.  If he doesn't however, I'm not gonna worry too much...Strong has a track record of hiring solid coaches, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

I know some very very EXTREAMLY good coaches that have tried to get on this staff and didn't get a shot... Pretty much what i'm saying is if he does leave someone very good will take his spot.

I) I'd say Coach Strong promised each of his assistants a 3 year commitment and they owe him the same.

2) I know Coach Strong is the symbol of success and he will bred promotions of his staff to other programs.

3) Coach Strong has the reputation of that success that will provide him access to whatever replacement coaches he feels will benefit his program.

We Horn fans have made a quantum jump from the old regime days and the program is positioned to be really good.

Hook 'Em!.

I doubt CS made a 3 year commitment with his assistants. At least with our previous WR and TE coach he didn't.

Apparently, Rump is staying. Take a look at this tweet.

Coach Strong may have left off the word "yet", because the feeling that I'm getting from media is that Coach Rumph hasn't decided one way or the other yet

From what I read, all of the staff received 2 year deals which means Les and ??? are still being paid.

FYI, Joey McGuire has announced he 's coaching his son for 2 more years.

Now the spotlight turns to the Gilmer head man for the TE/STs job.

No word on DL candidate

Here is Burton on the assistants

Clint Hurtt, who was previously an assistant under Strong at Louisville, is thought to be Strong's favorite for the position.

"He will hire Hurtt if Texas will let him," a coaching industry source familiar with the situation told Horns247 on Monday morning.

Strong hired Hurtt at Louisville despite an NCAA show-cause for hiring penalty that Hurtt suffered while at Miami because of his dealings with Hurricanes booster and ponzi scheme fraud Nevin Shapiro.

After leaving Louisville, Hurtt became the DL coach for the Chicago Bears this past season. The Bears head coach, Marc Trestman, was fired following the season. But Hurtt was recently retained by new Chicago coach John Fox and moved to outside linebackers coach.

Sources tell Horns247 that former LSU DL coach Brick Haley is also in play, and the initial vetting of him as a candidate has been done. Haley is considered one of the nation's best recruiters.

Neither Hurtt nor Haley relied solely on home-grown talent at Louisville or LSU for the defensive line, which is a recruiting ability Strong finds attractive.

Chip Brown of Scout reports that another defensive line coaching possibility is Bryant Young. Young played for Strong at Notre Dame before embarking on a 14-year career in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, followed by coaching stints at San Jose State and Florida. Two years ago, Young abruptly left Florida for family reasons and has not returned to coaching since, although he has expressed his desire publicly to return to coaching.

Initially, the new tight end coach was also expected to oversee all aspects of special teams. However, the status of the job is now in question.

Horns247 is aware of at least three Texas high school coaches who have been contacted about a possible position on the Texas staff. Cedar Hill head coach Joey McGuire was one of those, but McGuire told 247Sports yesterday that he would no longer be a candidate for any position at Texas.

Long-term Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor is reportedly scheduled to speak with Strong about a staff position on Tuesday.

Outside of McGuire and Traylor, another successful high school coach is also expected in Austin to speak with Strong this week. That coach's identity shall remain private at this time.

Discussions with high school coaches do not eliminate college coaches from consideration. We've mentioned more than once that Virginia Tech's Shane Beamer could also be a possibility for the position along with other college coaches.
