Coaching possibilities

A few weeks ago I wrote an article with a lot of names being mentioned as possibilities as head coach. I wanted to take a look at those guys a couple of weeks later:

Art Briles, Baylor - reportedly inked a new contract with Baylor with a large buyout. More than likely off the table.

Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks - A hot name for a short time, but with his NFL team winning no chance of getting him until possibly after the Super Bowl and we can't wait that long.

Jimbo Fisher, Florida State - Winning and winning big. Could win a title this year. Might be my 1A with Saban right now. Wish we would take a harder look at him.

Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern - On like a 6 or 7 game losing streak. No chance

Jon Gruden, NFL Analyst - Hearing his name more for NFL jobs now than Texas or USC. Probably no chance

Urban Meyer, Ohio State - Still hasn't lost a game at OSU, but that's his dream job and even though you have to call him, it's a longshot that he'd listen

Will Muschamp, Florida - Staring a 5-7 season and the first bowl less season in over 20 years dead in the face. No chance

Nick Saban, Alabama - Still the frontrunner and nothing has changed. The fact that he's probably going to playing for a 3rd straight title makes the logistics difficult for me to understand.

Charlie Strong, Louisville - Since they lost his name has fallen off the radar. Still think he'd get a call if Saban says no and the search opens up

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M - Getting a lot more run for the USC job than Texas. Another one that might get a look if Saban says no.

Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers - Having the worst season of his career and his starting QB is demanding a trade. Leaving might never look as good to him. We'll see if the smoke was real or not in a couple of weeks. I'm not holding my breath.

Names that I would add to the list:

Gus Malzahn, Auburn - Has turned a 3 win team into a 10 win team with a chance to play for the SEC title with an upset win over Alabama. Should definitely be on the list after Saban

James Franklin, Vanderbilt - Has made Vandy bowl eligible...again. Has done that every year there. Probably would need some help from people turning us down to get a look, but you can not deny his coaching abilities.

And I still think if Saban says no that we should take a look at Kirby Smart. He might not be the next Saban, but working beside him for that long makes him very attractive. Jimbo Fisher's success after working with Saban makes me think that Saban's assistants aren't fools gold.

If Saban turns down the job, I would go after Briles or Malzan. Both are very successful and are very well known in Texas.

Good list.

I agree 100%. Jimbo Fisher should be the 2nd guy we call if Saban says "no". Only making around 2.5MM per year at FSU. Obviously they will up the ante, but probably not in the UT range.

Fisher makes $2.75 million. The bigger issue is whether or not he'd want to leave one more year of Winston. We are probably about a year too early on Fisher or a year late now that he's turned them into the monster they've become.

I love his DC Pruitt. Former DB coach and ace recruiter for Saban at Alabama. I would love to take a look at him as the DC for whomever we hire.

I know Briles (was my 1B to start) signed a contract extension but it is believed to have a $5 million buyout. If that is true, Art Briles should be our next call whenever the situation with Saban is resolved. My next in line would be Charlie Strong.

IF you hire a defensive minded HC then go get a very good offensive mind for OC, and vice versa.

5 million is chunk change. from what i heard though from different sources, the buyout was $20 million. now, that's crazy

i have read both also but most of the noise on twitter said $5million.

I still think Urban Meyer is as interested as Saban, if not more so. It comes down to a few big money donors buying into the idea of Meyer coaching at Texas.

Meyer, more than anything else, wants to win and he's going to have a hard to time doing that in a playoff with a bunch of southern schools while at tOSU.

The state of Texas fits his style to a T. Also, the current Big 12 schedule isn't the pressure cooker that was the SEC a few years ago (When he coached there).

Urban and Texas are a perfectmatch on the field imo.

Just like he chose Florida over Notre Dame, he'd choose Texas over Ohio St imo. Maybe not on the first time, but if you rolled out the red carpet a couple of times I do believe he would leave. No sources, just a hunch.

Id give my 2nd born for Meyer. I think he's the absolutely best fit for this job for a lot of reasons like you mentioned but his age is also a major factor. While Saban would probably be here for 5-7 years, Meyer would be here for double that. And all he does is win.

I was watching the Ohio State game yesterday and they mentioned this is the THIRD separate time that he's won 20+ consecutive games in his career. He did it at Utah and Florida, again at Florida and now has won every game he's coached at Ohio State. If our BMDs want a winner, we can't do much better than UM.

The best thing that could happen to us is Ohio State and Baylor being left out of the title picture. That won't happen at Texas if we win out.

Here is deal with meyer...he pissed of some pretty important BMD's back in 2010 when he called for the job when he thought mack would be gone...again not saying it wont happen, but it will take for alot of things to change behind closed doors for him to be even called for interest

thanks for the info cujo. Maybe if BMDs had listened instead of having their heads in their asses(yes thats you Joe but don't sue me) then we would not be where we are today.

Those BMDs shouldn't have any say after what we have endured under Mack since 2010. Meyer would have us winning 10+ games a year while we've been consistently getting blown our every season since. Just another in a long line of failures by our admins

There are a few BMDs that don't like him for a few reasons.

But I think it is misguided. JMO.

This is a thread I like.it seems to many have the burnt orange blinders on in regards to saban.i think Kirby Smart would be a good coach some day. What do you guys think about mark richt??

If they don't like winning don't call UM. Easy as that.
Highest winning percentage by a BCS conference coach since WW2, which is the modern era of college football.

2 national titles before the age of 50.

I believe, but not certain, possibly after this year he may have a conference title in 4 different leagues?

Guy is a winner and Texas fits his style like nowhere else. How good could he be here? Scary.

This is a chance for Texas to reach its potential.
