Clarington apparently cleared by the NCAA (waiting on Texas?)

I knew after the tweet this morning he was in trouble. I think they have just been getting the story and plan of action together all day. Hopefully he still winds up a Horn but I would say all bets are off now.

When was the last time a kid didn't make it in academically and ended up at Texas later ? I'd guess NEVER....unless Hodges Mitchell signed with us out of high school and made it here via Blinn Jr College many years ago. I don't remember if he signed with us or not...or if his first name was Hodges.....LOL....(**&^&%# Alzheimer's !!!!

Anwar Richardson is saying technically he can enroll he just can't play football for a semester. It will be interesting what Clarington decides to do.

I think the best route to take is prep school for a semester and get the necessary ACT score. Honestly, in the long run this may be the best route for Clarington. I think for sure he would have played this year but I don't think he would have been a huge contributor quite yet. Prep school might be the best route like Holliman took at Louisville.

I think the only problem with enrolling is he would have to pay his way since he wouldn't be on athletic scholarship.

This is essentially the same thing that happened with Preston Williams they just didn't give Devo enough time to retake the ACT.

Taylor Gaspar at Horns Digest:

"I have no idea when I will retake it and I don't know when I will be eligible," Clarington said. "I'm still going (to Texas). I don't know how soon it will be, but I will be okay."

Asking Devo to retake the ACT is a pretty sensible request (at least it seems that way to me). Although I have 2 huge problems with this:

1.) This could have and should have taken a month to make this verdict. Making this verdict so late now leaves Devonaire Clarington in a position where it'll be impossible to play this year. The next ACT is on Sept. 12th and the sign up period has passed. That's is possibly very unfair to Devo (depending on whether or not he actually cheated). The reason this took so long is due to the NCAA taking problems like these on a rolling basis (meaning first come first serve). This system was investigated (by I think Mack Brown. Ill update this is Im wrong) and shown to be extremely antiquated. Which leads me to my second complaint

2.) Why is it the NCAA telling Devonaire he has to retake the test and not the ACT board. I feel like that may be pushing it a bit. He can still go to school. The jump was not big enough for the ACT to audit. I can see both ways on this issue but the NCAA should not have the ability to make a decision like this. What if he doesn't do as well as last time again. How is the NCAA going to judge/rule that? They really wouldn't be able to do it well. Hes able to go to school and be a student but not play football

All in all this is sort of an unhappy medium. It's a relatively sensible request as I said above. He'll end up going to a prep academy for a year to play football and go to school and we'll miss him for a year. This however is nothing new for Strong. In 2011 saftey from Florida(?) Gerod Holliman had to go to prep school just like Devo hes now in the NFL.

Once again we look really good in 2016. It just makes recruiting TE's for the 2016 recruiting class that much more interesting/easy(maybe?)

To be honest however this is basically a minor red shirt year which he would have probably needed anyway due to missing an entire off season of conditioning and learning the playbook.

As long as Clarington ends up on campus eventually I don't even think this bad news (except for the kid).

Coming this late into camp it was going to be difficult.

Well, it sucks that we won't have Devo this season.

It'll be interesting to see how the TE position comes along in the new offense this season. Let's hope Whiteley and McNeal catch enough balls so Devo doesn't change his mind about UT.

At the end of the day, this sucks. But looking forward, it's more or less a redshirt experience for Devo. He'll miss the season but will still be eligible to join the team next year if he can handle the ACT. I do think that the NCAA should have gotten this verdict put together long ago but that's another fight for another day.
