CFP Rankings/Playoff Thread

Hard to imagine South Carolina making a serious run, so sounds like that would be a win for the other teams.

South Carolina is one of those teams I don't want to play right now.

Finebaum made a good point about Clemson winning gives the committee a chance to keep SMU in the field and pass on all the 3-loss SEC teams.
I'm sure anyone can make a good point or two for any SEC 3 loss team or SMU or Miami. It's up to the committee now.

I think the real question is which one of these "bubble" teams can go all the way? Don't look at records, don't look at who beat who. Who is peaking right now?

Finebaum's point was that the committee could take the "easier" way out and leave out Alabama, SC, and Ole Miss. I'm really hoping we get put in opposite sides of the bracket from Georgia no matter who wins on Saturday. I would hate to have a rematch as a 1-8 or 2-7. If it's for the championship, then that would be awesome.

Well the committee just ensured Georgia will be in the playoff regardless. They moved up two spots to five. I hope they have the presence of mind not to put Texas and UGa in the same bracket.
Ohio St drops four to number six.
Overall it seems the committee is trying to position as many SEC teams for the playoff as they can.

Texas and UGA are in the same bracket. We'd meet in the 2nd round if Georgia wins their game.

If we win, we are the 1 or 2 seed.

But what if we lose. Ideally we want to drop to the 5 seed as we have seen that path to the semi-finals is the most appealing.

If we lose and:
Oregon loses - they would remain ranked above us and we would be 6th seed at best

Notre Dame - no game, would a 11-2 Texas stay ranked ahead of 11-1 ND?

Ohio State/Tenn - no game, would a 11-2 Texas stay ranked ahead of 10-2 Ohio State/Tenn?

I do think common opponents help us in all 3 of these scenarios. ND lost to A&M. Ohio State lost to Michigan. Tenn lost to Arkansas and had worse performances against OU, Florida, Kentucky, Miss St. They did beat Vandy by 13.

I believe ND beat aggy.

This all assumes that 1-4 win and they don't punish the losers of the CCG. We don't know that.

If Boise loses, then the Big 12 will get the bye. If SMU loses, bye, bye 'Bama. If Texas wins, will Georgia slide down? If Texas loses, is a 2 loss Penn St going to be ranked above a 2 loss Texas team? As far as I'm concerned this is just click bait.

I was gonna post some scenario's but there are so many permutations it started making my head hurt.
Lets just try this one: Texas, Penn St, SMU, Iowa St and Boise all win. The seeds
1. Texas
2. Penn St
3. SMU
4. Boise
5. Oregon
6. ND
7. Ohio St
8. UGa
9. Tenn
10. Indiana
11. Alabama
12. Iowa St

There's at least 120 different possibilities regarding the CCG outcomes.

What we know now that games are over:
1 - Oregon (AQ, top 4 seed guarantee)
2 - Georgia (AQ, top 4 seed guarantee)
3- Boise State (AQ, top 4 seed guarantee)
4. Arizona State (AQ, top 4 seed guarantee)
5,6,7 - Texas, Penn State, ND, in some order
8 - Ohio State
9 - Tenn
10 - Indiana
11 - SMU or BAMA
12 - Clemson (AQ)

It should be Texas, Penn State, ND in that order. Otherwise, you’re penalizing teams for losing a close game in the CCG.

Really interested in seeing if it’s SMU or Bama. I think it should be SMU, but I’m biased

You don't have to be biased to feel that way. I think SMU has had a better season than Bama. SMU needs to be in.

FWIW -

Small margins separate Texas and Penn State, with the Horns entering Sunday with a strength of resume ahead of the Fighting Irish and Nittany Lions in ESPN’s metrics. The FPI Power Index also slots Texas as the nation’s best team following the overtime loss to Georgia.

So those metrics and the No. 2 ranking of the Longhorns by the committee last week suggest that Texas has a floor of the No. 7 seed, securing a first-round matchup in Austin at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
