Big 12 Expansion Project

UT and OU to the SEC, right? That's your dream scenario?  ;)
I would be good with Pac or Big 10. as well. Big 10 would be my first choice. Adding a bunch of schools with 45k seat stadiums while only 15k show up for games does nothing for me. Also eventually elite recruits will quit coming as well.

I see no basis for the addition of schools equating to the loss of elite recruits.

Texas has lost elite recruits because they have put a crap product on the field since 2009. As soon as recruits see that Texas is ready to roll I believe the elite recruits will roll in.

What has happened is that TCU and Baylor and others have put a better product on the field since Texas' downturn. The recruits know that.

What irks me a bit is that your preference appears to be a thinly veiled scheme of how to 'encourage' elite recruits to select Texas. Again, elite recruits would love to attend Texas. Until Texas proves that it is doing the hard work to scrap their way to the top, the elite recruits will stay lukewarm. Let's hope Strong is in the process of the turnaround.

Although I disagree with you, I upvote you for being honest with your opinion.

Anybody out there still think ESPN will buy-out existing T3 contracts to launch a Big12 Network? That idea is DOA unless FOX steps up, but don't bet on that either because procuring LHN will be viewed as cost-prohibitive.

I agree with this assessment. Further, I have to believe that Boren knows this too. This may even explain his erratic behavior. Again, Texas has a rival that is angry with the fact that they are Texas. Again, maybe Dodds struck while the iron was hot and took advantage of a sellers market. Now there may be no buyers left.

I know the SEC has the thing where they are all proud of their conference. The history of the Texas schools are a bit different. The SWC was the greatest. We all hated each other. If we (the Big XII) think we are going to put something together where we all bow to the conference in the end, I just don't think football in Texas is geared that way. We love to hate each other too much.

Boren is sending out mixed signals, and its a little embarrassing. Any reporter paying attention will bring this to light.

Boren – Big 12 has psychological disadvantage not having 12 teams.

Boren – If expansion doesn't come with a conference network, then it's not worth it.

Well, which is it? Are we disadvantaged or not? And why is being disadvantaged okay if there's no conference network?

IMO, it sounds a WHOLE LOT like Boren has a burr up his arse for Longhorn Network. He wants it gone, period. Everything else is just bluster. End LHN tomorrow and we probably don't hear another word from him on expansion.

Yeah, the okie buffoon is starting to sound more like a dumbass aggy every day. We need more of that in our lives. "Psychologically disadvantaged", indeed.

I don't see a Big 12 Network happening for two reasons:

  1. ESPN won't make the investment to buy-out remaining T3 contracts. Neither will FOX in an a la carte programming world. Conference networks were just another money grab for carriage rates - not necessarily ratings.
  2. Even if you can "keep UT whole" financially - why would we give up LHN for the same money? That doesn't sound like good business to me. Our administration takes great pride in having our own channel. Why share it with no incentive, monetarily or otherwise?

I knew we could count on The Dude of WV for Clay Travis-like mathematics on his Big12 Network revenue projections. For a carriage-dependent business model that will soon be passe'. Bravo

You are 100%. I was thinking the same thing: he's jealous that Texas has a network and OU doesn't. And that is simply NOT a good reason for the conference to expand.

The Big 12 is disadvantaged, but not because of not having 12 or 14 teams. I find it interesting that the Big 12 and Pac-12 have one thing in common about being left out of the playoff in the first two seasons: both played 9-game conference schedules.

The Big Ten moves to 9 games this season, but the ACC and SEC will continue to have an advantage over everyone else. The extra patsy makes bowl eligibility easier and inflates records, which in turn inflates the champion's record (i.e.- we beat x-many 9-win teams, we beat 10 bowl teams, etc).

Fixing the Big 12's disadvantage is pretty simple. Networks won't allow the Big 12 to drop down from 9 as it stands, but the promise of 2 high-profile non-conference games each season per school (as opposed to only 1) should do the trick. The 5 conference games would be replaced with 5 high-profile home games, thus no drop off in content.

Fair point. The only incentives I can think of would be to make the Big 12 more appealing to power programs and to chip away at the "Texas is a bully" perception. You don't do something like that to attract Group of 5 programs.

Can't think of anything else though, unless projections (that do not exist yet) would offer more money.

"Doesn't matter who the Big 12 adds." Huh? It certainly would matter, as FSU has a much larger market than Memphis or Cincinnati.

He is right on one thing: if the ACC doesn't get it's network, some schools will have to leave in order to keep up with their non-conference rivals and peers. If the $45M ACCN clause is true, that still only gives ACC schools $21M per year for TV pay, which is behind the Big 12...

sport, you are swinging and missing left and right.  it doesn't matter who the conference adds among the programs that are available.  no point whatever in talking of programs that aren't coming.
