Saw on another site that it's rumored he has to resign or get fired. Anyone here have better intel?

I think it’s at least being considered, but nothing has happened just yet.
This is wild to me.  I think the guy stinks as well but is it really for the best moving forward?  Who comes in and replaces him?  Or who is promoted?

Those are questions I don’t have answers to. We are only a few days removed from the end of the regular season, so I’m sure some serious thought will be put into it between now and January.

Would be a dickish move to cut him while he is out West in Cali visiting Rising. Question is, who are our alternatives?

Rumor I'm hearing is that Beck would be retained, but reassigned to QBs only. Mehringer would be the new OC and call plays.

Where are you hearing that?

This whole OC thing stinks of the Watson debacle.  Next season Sterlin ran an irritating to watch rushed offense but he sure moved the ball.  Missing him this season.  The OL guy from last season seemed to get the most out of players, and the hurry up scheme probably helped hide some deficiencies in the lineman.

Nutshell, fire Beck.  Unfortunately Texas is not a prime job opportunity for assistants anymore.  Candidates see lemons that can't be turned into lemonade our roster.

This makes the most sense to me. Especially considering Herman moved Mehringer to the booth a few weeks ago. I just can't see the step back that's inherent from inserting a new OC as being a good thing. Alignment and consistency are maintained with this move...

Well I guess he's better than Beck. although he was sent to the press box for the TCU game. I checked and his one year as OC at Rutgers and they averaged 15 points a game.

When Herman hired Beck most fans were not impressed. If this change goes through, Herman no longer gets the benefit of the doubt.  If this change is made at least he did it in one year unlike CS who gave Watson 2 years and a couple of games in his third season.

If I recall, when Chip Kelly was at Oregon the offense was a direct reflection of him. I don't recall wondering who the OC was during that run.

Am betting there will be no messing around, no questions flying around the air about the Bruins' offense and OC, starting next season at UCLA.

The offense on the field will be Chip Kelly personafied. And it will kick ass. Chip Kelly will see to it, no ifs ands and butts.

I think that can be said at Clemson, Ohio State and Auburn. The Head Coach's offense is on the field. The HC sees to it. He does not mess around with that aspect of the game.

Should be the case at Texas. Bar none.

Does Chip Kelly call his own plays? I don't know. Urban Meyer doesn't even though it's his offense also.

Some coaches are just philosophically opposed to calling plays. After watching Jason Garrett struggle early to call plays and also be a HC, I can understand why many HCs don't believe they have bandwidth for it.

Herman turned the Meyer offense into a force, and it sounded liked Herman thought Beck could do the same for him. Obviously, he was wrong.

On that note... I've always had a problem with a coach who brings a "style" and can't do anything else. The best coaches take what they have and fit the system to the players, not vice versa. System coaches can work, but if they don't have what they need early it can take a long time to get there. Rich Rod at Michigan is a good example of that. It took him several years to get that WV offense cranking at a high level, but he didn't have what he needed at MI to have early success.

That's a bit of a cautionary tale for Texas and Herman as well, which gets us back into square peg/round hole problems. Maybe we don't have the personnel to run the "Herman" offense and need a completely different approach while we recruit and transition to players that can run it. I refuse to believe there's not enough talent on the offense to produce more than we saw this year, even with the injuries.

So whether or not we keep Beck, the larger problem is running an offensive style that may not have the required personnel. If that's the case, then no matter who comes in and calls plays it won't get much better until Herman gets a few recruiting classes signed, trained, and sculpted.
