ANYTHING SPRING FOOTBALL!!

Per Chip:

"Bob Shipley (father of former Texas WRs Jordan and Jaxon Shipley) coached Shackelford at Belton and told me during the recruiting process that Shackelford had the kind of nasty, competitive temperament Charlie Strong is looking for in players. (Wickline nearly cost Texas Shackelford by greeting him for the first time ever as, "Hey, fat ass." - when Shackelford attended a UT camp that he had to pay to attend."

I guess Higs doesn't approve on the way Briles runs his offense. This is from a 2013 article on the Baylor offense. Good article to help explain on how the UT offense is going to work.

Baylor achieves its insanely high level of proficiency at quarterback thanks to the practice routine that also makes its in-game tempo so quick. They line up and run their plays in practice even faster than they do on Saturdays, resulting in endless reps and enabling their timing and muscle memory to approach perfection.

Spring practice guidelines:

Of the 15 allowable sessions that may occur during the spring practice season, eight (8) practices may involve live contact; three (3) of these live contact practices may include greater than 50 percent live contact (scrimmages). Live contact practices are limited to two (2) in a given week and may not occur on consecutive days.

Texas coach Charlie Strong spent the first day after spring break talking to the university faculty council. His confident tone Monday was striking.

Strong touched on several program cornerstones, including the importance of academics and his appreciation of UT faculty members. The coach made it clear that all faculty members are welcome to attend practices, and that they should report when players miss class. A 5 a.m. running session awaits truants.

“You think about a degree from the University of Texas and how important it is,†Strong said. “For some of them, their parents didn’t have this opportunity. I tell them all the time, you’re not going to waste this opportunity.â€

But Strong, who spoke with a tad more oomph than he normally does with reporters, is clearly excited about the recent recruiting class and what it may signal going forward. In his mind, back-to-back losing seasons are a thing of the past.

“What’s going to happen when we flip this thing? Where are we going to be then?,†he told the crowd of about a hundred faculty members. “You think about what we’re doing right now, what’s going to happen when we really get it turned?

“They might as well move out of the way, because we are going to steamroll everyone,†he added. “That’s going to happen.â€

“I love that we open with Notre Dame. I really do love that,†Strong said.

From what I am told, there is little question among those in charge of the offense that Texas has a difficult situation on its hands at quarterback.

Neither Tyrone Swoopes nor Jerrod Heard are going to be the "answer". Either of them may eventually "win" the starting job, but it will be by attrition or a lesser of two evils situation. Unfortunately, it won't be because of sterling play. That is not the expectation. That's the feeling of those inside the offensive room I am told.

The feeling is the coaching staff can and will do some things to shore up their shortcomings and accentuate their positives. But as for either of them ever being the complete answer, it's just not going to happen.

As many of you know, I tend to agree with this summation. But I want to be clear, it's not my summation that I am recounting here.

Of the remaining three QBs -- Shane Buechele, Kai Locksley and Matthew Merrick -- the offensive room is encouraged by what they have seen thus far from Buechele.

They like his arm. They like his accuracy. They like his moxie. They like his decision making. They like how he handles himself. They think he has the tools to eventually answer all of what the staff needs from the position.

But there are two major drawbacks:

1. His inexperience on the college level. I am told that there are those in the offensive room who feel like this issue is over-rated to some degree, because he is a significantly better, more natural and competent thrower than the competition he is facing.

2. This is the big one. Is he physically ready? They just don't know. Remember, he has played multiple sports his entire life until this year. So while he has always been in the weight room to some degree, weight-lifting itself has almost never been the primary focus for him during a football off-season.

At the end of the day, the staff doesn't have all the answers yet.

There are still 12 more spring practices remaining and a little less than six months before the season opener.

In the interim, I'm told that Texas is looking to sign a grad transfer at QB (and possibly add a scholarship PK).

I don't know who the targets at either position might be or if the Horns will be able to fill the spots. But the issue of who will start at QB for Texas come September is far from decided.

There's no telling what you're liable to read about the QB situation. Tomorrow it wouldn't surprise me to read something totally opposite of this on another site. It's almost laughable.

Well, we didn't even have to wait until tomorrow. Report on another talking about Heard looking good in today's practice. Said he was "dealing" in 7 on 7.

This is the first good report I've heard on Heard. I was looking for Swoopes to start and Buechele to take over if Swoopes plays like he has in the past. Hopefully, things will start clicking for Heard.

What grad transfer QBs are still out there? PITTs Chad Voytk (spelling ?) is one that comes to mind. Not sure what other QBs with experience are out there for last minute transfers? IMO Voytk seems like a game manager type having watched PITT over the yrs. my dad is a PITT alum, that explains my interest in watching PITT games!

He may better than anyone we have on our roster this year.

Voyitk started last season for the Panthers and entered 2015 as the team’s starter before losing the job to Nate Peterman, who was a graduate transfer from Tennessee. In 13 games as a starter in 2014, Voytik completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 2,233 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added 466 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Any transfers that graduate in May can still change their minds on where they want to play. For instance I heard awhile back that Davis Webb was interested in playing here bc of Gilberts offense, but he has already "committed" to transfer to Colorado in May after he graduates.
