ANYTHING SPRING FOOTBALL!!

I asked Chip a couple questions on HD. He had some interesting responses:

can you compare this year's football team to last years going into spring break?

Thanks TeamMayhall -

Here's where I think the team is better, worse or even:
QB - Better ... More competition in a much better offense.
RB - Better ... Warren and D Foreman have both proven themselves, and more help is on the way (when Kirk Johnson recovers from his ACL tear and Kyle Porter arrives)
WR - Even ... That's saying a lot considering Texas lost Daje and Marcus Johnson. But Collin Johnson is the real deal on the opposite side from John Burt, and I think Armanti Foreman and Ryan Newsome are showing signs of helping. DeAndre McNeal and Lorenzo Joe aren't making a difference yet, but it's early.
TE - Even ... Caleb Bluiett and Andrew Beck will get help when Peyton Aucoin arrives.
OL - Better ... the starting OL right now - LT C Williams, LG B Hodges, C Zach Shackelford, RG P Vahe, RT K Perkins - is better than last year's OL at this time. (Hodges and Shack are both upgrades and Williams and Vahe are more experienced.)
DL - Worse ... Gone are Hassan Ridgeway and Desmond Jackson. Say no more.
LB - Better ... I think the improvement of Breckyn Hager and Anthony Wheeler to go along with Malik Jefferson makes up for the loss of Peter Jinkens
DB - Better ... Holton Hill, DaVante Davis, DeShon Elliott, Sheroid Evans, P.J. Locke, Kris Boyd have all stepped up their games

what were your observations of Sterlin Gilbert yesterday?

Per Chip:

Gilbert is totally locked in. Knows exactly what he wants. And the good news is the players know exactly what he wants.

Everyone on offense already totally understands the concepts of this offense. Because the concepts are simple. It's all about making a quick, correct read by the QB, and then playing pitch and catch or running power football against a light box.

I think he already has total respect among the rest of the coaching staff on both sides of the ball.

Off to a great start.

How far behind is Heard in the QB battle?

Where is Dalton Santos?

What kind of arm does Kai Locksley have? Good Deep ball? Accurate? Both? Drunken Duck?

Per Chip:

1) Honestly, Swoopes, Heard and Buechele are a lot closer than you think.

2) Coming back from an ankle injury. And I hear he's at least 265 pounds.

3) A little bit of all of that. But he's settling down and hitting his short and intermediate routes more and more. Deep ball still needs work.

Thoughts on the new WR coach after watching practice?

Per Chip:

I thought Charlie Williams was more calm on the third day of spring practice.

On the first day or practice, I thought he was futilely trying to coach on the field, when the players were too busy looking to the sideline for the signal of the next play.

I also thought he was yelling for yelling's sake on Monday.

On Thursday, I thought he had settled into a more relaxed state.

Just some thoughts.

Who do we currently have on the Defensive Line? I really can't remember guys besides Ridgeway, Jackson, and Ford (who I know is still here). And Boyette, as well.

Still, I think when the other freshmen DL's get here the situation will improve. I hope.

Returning – Ford, Boyette, Jake McMillon (I think), Chris Nelson.

Coming in – Christmas-Giles, Chris Daniels, Jordan Elliott, Gerald Wilbon, Marcel Southall

I'm excited about the Hager kid at LB. If he can control all that energy inside him, he's going to be a good one.

I disagree with WR. I believe our wide receivers can be much better than last year.

I'm with ya'll. Daje was an empty promise his whole career, and I cant remember anything great from Marcos Johnson either. I think out receivers will be the most improved part of the team.

Just win baby.

Carlton: What Charlie Strong needs to do to cool his seat down in 2016

Question: Read your article on how Charlie's treated like he can't get anything right. What's it going to cool his seat down?

Carlton: Probably at least eight regular-season wins and meaningful games into November in the Big 12. For all the support Strong has, he can't afford another five or six-win season, not at Texas. If Texas were to start 1-2 in the non-conference with losses to Notre Dame and Cal, you easily see things start to spiral especially with Oklahoma State (in Stillwater) and Oklahoma the first two games in Big 12 play.

Question: Which assistant coaching change in the Big 12 would you bet has the most effect on next season?

Carlton: Not to be Captain Obvious here, but no hire carries more importance than Sterlin Gilbert at Texas. None. If he succeeds, then Texas is back and Charlie Strong can breathe easier. If not ...

Question: What are the best position battles in spring football?

Carlton: I don't know if it is the best position battle but the most significant for a program might be the Texas quarterback competition. With new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, it does seem like the competition is open with no true front-runner. Texas needs offensive production and needs it soon. I'm also interested to see how soon TCU names a starter, which might be a good indication of how well Kenny Hill has adjusted.

Question: What would it take to move the needle hard in one direction or another during the spring practices on the Texas QB front? Isn't it just better for the team to have the controversy out of the way early?

Carlton: I think it's going to be pretty simple: who can move the offense without turning the ball over. It's a quarterback friendly offense. Who steps up? New OC Sterlin Gilbert told me recently that he won't know until he gets in the room and starts making the install. But he's not guy who will try to fit a square peg into a round hole.
