8/11 Practice Report

:00 - Boyette controls Flowers and holds Davis to a yard
:04 - Williams, Hutchins, and Nickelson handle (unknown), Davis, and Omenihu to allow Bernard a good gain
:09 - Vasher, Nelson, and Omenihu battle Rodriquez, Vahe, and Hodges for a yard by DeGroot
:13 - Same group = 3 yards
:18 - Hager blows past McNeal for the TFL on Bernard
:23 - Colbert tosses Elliott aside then mauls Davis
:28 - Burt, Newsome, and Bernard vs Davis, Locke, and Boyd = good gain
:36 - Same group = no gain
:43 - Hager tosses McNeal aside again for a TFL with Wheeler getting in a lick

  • Walk-ons, Connor Huffman #27 and Hunter DeGroot #29 are earning whatever "free" meal privileges they get at the training table!
  • I was surprised to see Vahe #77 get stopped cold at the LOS - twice
  • Hager is just a baller - love that kid. #44 is a good number for a LB even if it was Bosworth's

Mike, considering what his dad meant to Texas Football, you deserve to eat a little crow.

Hook 'em!

1. It's your turn, Jerrod

Heard's supporters and Swoopes' detractors all say that the redshirt freshman's advantage is his ability to keep the chains moving via running the football. If I was Charlie Strong, I wouldn't subscribe to the "he's a gamer not a practice player" theory.

If Heard is going to "win the team" or have a chance for meaningful playing time, then he needs to elevate his performance starting tonight. Whistles blow quickly and QB's don't get taken to the ground, but those things shouldn't prevent Heard from making a statement.

The popular line of thinking is that Heard's advantage in running is commensurate with Swoopes' advantage in passing. Let's see it.
I don't see Heard fully winning the team before the season. It seems like Swoopes will be the starter. If Heard can improve his passing then that would give his coaches and fellow players more confidence when it comes into the ND game.

To fully win the team over will be accomplished during a game when the bullets are flying. As far as I'm concern that applies to Swoopes also. I don't care how good Swoopes looks in practice. He needs to prove it in games when he's not wearing a black jersey.

Wickline likes to shuffle things around during fall camp but Vahe started getting first team reps.

I won't even be slightly surprised if both Vahe and Williams are eventually starting on the offensive line as true freshman. Strong and staff have pretty much made it clear they aren't big on the roster left behind by Mack. Expect to see a lot of true freshman starting like he did at Louisville in his second year.

I understand that but I thought he was a kid with a limited upside. It's only been a few practices so who knows but I talked to a guy who said he's catching the attention of upperclassmen

I love what Santos said about Hager.

"Hager is the truth."

To echo UTIS & huskie, think of Jefferson in the middle as an effort to have the best 11 on the field. Having MJ at MLB might not be his long-term position, but it's a way for Bedford to put his best defenders on the field at the same time.

Things like "open competion" and "putting your best 11 on the field" aren't sound bytes for this coaching staff.
Did we write that up here prior to the Spring Game?

Hard to remember. Plus, I have to admit I had some apathy for quite awhile after that bowl game.

It also appears Major will be added to the OL soon

With Hill (possibly back today) and Elliott ("The Kraken") out, Davis and Boyd have taken advanatge and, according to some at least, are already pushing past Echols and Davis.

Davis' good size (6'2, 191) easily stands out.
Boyd has been aggressive and fast.  Coaches are said to be excited about him at nickel.

In both practices I attended, Boyd was a standout. #2 appears throughout my notes on both days.
