5 Thoughts Following The Loss to OU

I read on a Facebook post that we have serious issues in our locker room.  The post said we have players getting ready to fight each other. Has anyone heard anything on this?

I saw the press conference and don’t remember TH saying Sam was the starter, it was the same ole whoever practices better.

Please elaborate if possible.  For example, which feed were you reading?  What is the source of division/friction?  Etc

I tried to find it but I couldn’t. I think it was a closed group, maybe, Revolution. Not sure though

If Shane transfers, he transfers. There is almost no team that does not suffer a drastic drop off from 1st team QB to second team. I am not worried about that. I think the key to keeping Sam healthy is to get some continuity in the O Line.

Also, at some point we are going to have to address Boyd. I dont know if he will ever realize his potential, and the same goes for Brandon as well. Bonney doesnt have all those tools, but at least he knows what he is supposed to do.
FYI - Jana Buschele, Shane's mom, was the babysitter for Mike Perrin and his wife when their kids were little (before Shane was born). Shane has been close with Mike Perrin since he was a toddler (Shane, not Mike). We all know Shane's father's connections with professional sports.

Shane's goal isn't to be the next Tom Brady. It is to be the next Mike Perrin. If you don't know who Perrin's mentor was, it was his father-in-law. Perrin, Shane and Shane's parents have no doubt had many long talks about Shane's future in sports. Shane is looking at the sports professional track similar to what Oliver Luck or Mark Byrne have done. He's staying at Texas, and will probably end up working inside Bellmont while he goes to UT law.

QB at a D2 school isn't going to do anything for Shane's long term future. I would be shocked if he did anything other than graduate UT undergrad early, enroll at UT Law, and probably use all four years of eligibility as a back-up QB, learning from Herman and Perrin.

Should Shane ever decide to transfer out just like any other player I wish him the best of luck so long as he is not playing against the Longhorns. That is it plane and simple the staff and team just continues on working to improve the program.  For the Longhorns to become a dominant team again it is all about the quality of depth you have because when players get injured are the guys that you have on the second team still better than what the other team has out on the field.  For those teams like Alabama and the great Miami teams in the 90's they had players on the second team being drafted over many other college teams first string players.  You get quality depth on the Offensive Line it goes a long ways in making average running back and quarterbacks become college stars!

Its not as bad as some make it out to be. Frustrated? Yes. But there is still much football to be played.

There is much progress thats not being talked about. I agree, the OL is a problem. But they'll get better with each practice, with each game. I'm not ready to write them off yet.

We have a QB who, like Colt, learned to live with a lesser OL and created offense with it. Thats what we're seeing each time Sam walks onto the field.

There's an emergency in OL recruiting, so I expect some emphasis on that in the coming weeks as well as scouting potential grad transfers that they know about. I think Herman and Warehime are doing the best they can but the players ultimately have to execute. But don't make the assumption that things just stay the same.

I think we beat OSU, btw.

Until a few weeks ago Malik Jefferson had been a bust.  I do believe he is in much better form recently and beginning to consistently approach playing up to his potential.  If he continues to improve and compete at this level he might be a very fine pro some day although he is rather light to be a thumper.

Go watch film of Tommy Nobis or Mike Singletary.  That is elite.  MJ?  No friggin way.
Idk if you compare him to Nobis or Singletary; just not a fair comparison. But I definitely think you can compare him to Derrick Johnson. And he wasn't too shabby during his time on the forty. Malik needs to return for his senior year and finish what he started imo...

Wake me up when everyone stops being content with moral victories and improvement.  Does everyone realize we have lost to HoeU 3 of the last 4 games?  Yet we are still trying to rationalize our suckness with aggy like moral victories.  Sounds like the ags boasting they scored so many points on Bama in their failed comeback.

Keywords are improvement, fight, not laying down, turning the corner, giving it our all, heart, etc.  I realize its blasphemy in our shallow world of expectations but maybe dont get down to your arch rival 17-0 in the first 16 minutes of play and you dont have prove you still have fight and heart.  Insane I know.

While most on here see improvement and "we gave it our all" bullshit I see the same shit.  We gave away games we had.  We beat ourselves.  USC and now to the shit sooners.  We had the lead both games in the closing minutes only to shit it away.  Is that improvement?  Nope.  When can we all graduate from the "not laying down" improvement to winning games that we have lead in the closing minutes?  I would like to know.

Well anyways carry on with the proverbial making strides and turning the corner talking points.

and yea im bitter....we lost to HoeU.  It used mean something more.

Have not posted in a long time but look at this site pretty much daily as I value the opinions of the members here.  Not as fast paced as some but I appreciate the measured responses given by most here.  I always appreciate Daniel's analysis and insight.  Even throwing away the Maryland game I admit I am a little frustrated we are not sitting 5-1.  Sooo Close!  But I am confident that Tom Herman and staff are doing the things necessary to rebuild Texas into a championship program.   I am coming to this conclusion 6 games in and hoping not to be disappointed.  Stumbled across Michael Huff's article in The Players Tribune..."When Texas Played Like Texas"  If you haven't read this yet it is well  worth your time.     )https://www.theplayerstribune.com/michael-huff-texas-football/

Also wanted to comment about Sam's injury.  As Physical Therapist who spent 30+ years performing athletic training I was really surprised and concerned about Sam's return to play.  Did we really put a kids health secondary to a football game, even if it is OU? At first glance he appeared to have undeniable LOC (loss of consciousness)  which during my time (last coverage of athletic event was 5 years ago) was an immediate disqualification for return to play and could be 10 day (symptom free) mandatory wait for return to contact.  Know that return to play decisions are entirely in the hands of the medical staff and any coach would be foolish to wade into the concussive protocol in these times. (Remember when "I got my bell rung was a badge of honor).   I went back and watched the film where the training staff were evaluating Sam.  After looking at the film in slow motion I felt better about their decision.  The trainers attending to him were there immediately and correctly immobilized his head and neck until a C-spine injury could be ruled out.  They were holding his shoulders down and I assume telling him not to move until they got the information they needed.  There is a point where his eyes are closed then pop wide open which initially led me to believe he was out.  Although difficult to see as trainers head is in front of Sam, he did have his eyes open prior to this and seemed to be blinking and speaking.  With no LOC and ability to pass Neurological exam(I assume administered in the tent) return to play can certainly be appropriate.  With baseline neurological data on all players and helmet sensors monitoring practice forces, Texas football is leading the nation in their concern for their players neurological health.  Guess I may need to trust the guys on the field to put our players health and safety first.  I don't want to try to present myself as an expert and don't know if anyone else had any of my thoughts but I do feel  better after reviewing the film.  Sorry for the length.

 Hook Em!

The point that I was responding to was a poster said that Malik has been playing at an elite level this season.  DJ was a fantastic player and I believe MJ can also be a fantastic player.  If MJ continues to perform and improve as he has shown this season I believe he will be in that fantastic neighborhood.  If he gets even light years better than he has been performing this season and does so consistently throughout his senior season we MIGHT be looking at an elite player.

Might not make this succinct.. but here goes...

Based on current rankings, Sun 10/15... comparing conferences strength of regular season schedule. The point being, Herman is faced with a gauntlet his first season.

Big12 has the toughest schedule -- yes, is tied with Big10 for most teams in current Top 25, but Big12 plays all opponents, playing 9 conf games. 14-team conferences can slip in a real easy 12 game schedule depending.

In current Top 25... AP POLL ... not Coaches
Big 12 -  5 teams  - all play each other, unlike other Power 5 Conferences
Big10 -  5 in a 14-team conference like SEC
SEC  -    4, albeit 2 in Top 4, but here I'm talking about opponents and strength of schedule
ACC -    4, with ND playing a lot of ACC, but still an Independent
Pac10 - 4, none in Top 10
plus ND, S. Florida, Memphis, rounding out 25 teams

Since FL-State (2-3) dropped out of the Top 25, Alabama will not have played a current ranked team until suprise #23 LSU on Nov. 4, then current #21 Auburn last game. That's as tough as their year is until they play likely Georgia in the SEC title game. A cakewalk to the the game in Atlanta.

Texas schedule / current rankings...

#4  TCU on the road two weeks from this coming Sat
#9  OU just played on neutral site, late lead, 5pt loss
#10  Ok-State the only true home game of all 5 ranked opponents, Sat, 11 on ABC
#11  USC first road game for freshman Ehlinger, double OT 3-pt loss after stripped ball at goal line
#23  W VA on the road

Last 6 games will include two current Top 10 opponents within 14 days of each other, and a third (#23) on the road. Only Baylor and Kansas loom less-than-tough, then Tech at home Thanksgiving weekend but a tough out.

Now factor in the losses in the O-Line. During OU game the list was flashed on screen. Not a pleasant list to see.

Until an announcer jinxed things late 4th qtr, I believe Texas had only one offensive penalty up to then, but soon as the announcer said it (at which time I cursed the jinx!)... after one more play, I believe two offensive penalties called. Both teams were beat to pieces and we did not have an experienced line that could hold up that late in a bruising game with both sides exhausted. That's when mental and physical mistakes are made ... as in a long 5th set of a men's Grand Slam tennis match when both players are on empty. I'm amazed this team took the late lead Sat with a depleted line, if only the defense could have kept on assignment and not blown coverage...

I started the season hoping for 10-2 or 9-3 with Burnt Orange glasses. Now hoping for a miracle 8-4, no worse that 7-5, hate to see 6-6

Two Top-5 teams lost last weekend, and 4 of the Top 10. It's a rough season for all programs. But only the Big12 has a gauntlet for all teams. Aside from Maryland, 2 of our 3 losses were gladiator fights to the end against current #9 and #11. One by 3 pts, one by 5. And neither a home game.

The next 6 games will show a lot about the program, which I hope will not damage 2018 verbals, might even win some hearts.  Just need to find 5 healthy O-line players who can last 60 minutes for the plays when we have the ball.

Just wish there was a way Beck could get one receiver open on every play so the ball can be thrown in 2 seconds. Snap, count, throw. Like that. We need a terrific tight end over the middle for dumping the ball off, or an RB out of the backfield.

Hook'em.

Could maybe compare Malik to DJ athletically, but he’s not the natural DJ was at the position. The biggest thing MJ gets dinged for is his lack of instincts and being a guesser.

this game was lost in first quarter and half of 2nd quarter. you just can not get abused 20-0 before team decides to play. I know Texas fought back played with great heart but that was a bad 20 minutes or so.

Beck has to give RBs a chance call run plays that fit personnel i.e. quit running delay draws with Warren or running Porter straight into middle of the line and even if run plays do not gain huge yardage they allow O-line to take fight to defense keep running throw in a jet sweep or 5 ,run the stretch play Carter did well in kstate game.

Orlando made huge mistake not playing with spy on Mayfield early in game just can not let QB like him have running lane.

In other words, I think Shane knows he's not going to be a professional athlete.
I wonder if he has entertained the thought of playing Texas baseball... Inthink he was a pretty good prospect coming out of high school.  This would allow him to remain as a QB.

Useless speculation, granted.

I don’t know if this has been discussed and I missed it, did Porter get hurt. I don’t remember seeing him play in the 4th qtr.
