5 Thoughts Following The Loss to OU

Beck said in his last PC that Drayton puts in the back he thinks is best suited for the play.

Porter deserves credit he definitely played the best I have seen him to date.  He ran harder and wasnt tackled every run by the first contact.

I want to see Carter with more off tackle runs and screens.
Totally agree because we need someone that has the potential to take it to the house.  When was the last time they had a rush over 30 yards this season?  The only one I can think of is CW3's 41yd TD against SJSU.  One rushing play over 30yds in 6 games....is not good, imo.

Every loss is tough to take. The Horns showed moxie to come from 17 down and take the lead. A stop here or there a play made on offense here or there could have been the diffrence on the scoreboard ...good guys win..but this is football. The jimmys and joes have to execute the x's and o's the Horns fall short again blown coverages on defense and shaky oline are the culprits again.

Moving forward I wish TH and Tim Beck would work a plan where I QB doesn’t get hit as much especially seeing is how we only have 2 QB’s. I know TH had Ward at Houston and that’s the way he played, but I would rather the QB’s uniform not even get dirty. Sam is 230 lbs, but he isn’t going to be able to take all those hits forever. In the future when we have more QB’s on the roster then maybe we could run the QB more. Of course I know all this is contingent on getting our running game going and we have had a huge amount of injuries in the offensive line. Our O-line is giving great effort, but the players we have lost there are huge. I am just saying Sam is a really really good player and I want to see him continue to grow. I have just never been a fan of running the QB a lot. Occasionally it is ok and effective, but to many things can happen when a QB runs......ie turned ankle, concussion. Just saying

What pisses me off even more than not being able to run the ball is watching play after play when we cant stop them from running the ball. We get them in a 3rd and 20 and they simply hand off for a first down? That is not good defense. How many plays did they have over 20 yds?...Lots! Thats how many!

Daniel.... this is exactly what it looked like.

I know you're not a mind reader, but as an ex-coach, how do you explain this... in THIS game?  Best guess.

Certainly they weren't flat, meaning just not interested in being there.  Over-hyped.... young players with dear in the headlights at the environment....  OU just faster / better than other teams they have faced??

I agree with the quote above, I'm just really interested to grasp the phycology of how it could happen.
Can only guess that it was nerves of playing in a big game. It happens from time to time. Big game with big expectations.

Just took a quarter and change for the team as a whole to get their feet underneath them.

I think I agree with the theory that Herman is trying to keep Shane engaged so that he does not transfer.  Anointing Sam the job for the next 3 1/2 years would almost certainly cause Shane to transfer if he wants to play QB in college.

Texas MUST get out of this true freshman funk at QB.  If Shane leaves, we have another year with a TF being one snap away from starting status.  An inadequate depth chart at QB is a coach killer and MENSA knows it.  The depth chart at QB played a large part in the last two coaches being ushered out the door.
We need to also get out of playing TF on the OL.  OU line was all Jr./Sr. ( Evans a RS Soph , still 3rd year player ).  Meanwhile we have a TF Right Tackle and a True Sophomore LT who should have RS last season.

Without an OL the Horns will be stuck in "groundhog day mode". This has been a fact for way too many seasons now. They can't win when they can't run the ball against the better teams of football. Not scoring in a half is pathetic. This squad is progressing, but is still a year away from being good. TH was given a bad hand on the OL he inherited, but he will fix it. This game was a reality check on just where this team stands right now. Time to put the burnt orange glasses down and stop drinking the kool aide.

Most OL require 2 years to transition from HS to college.  It will improve but the lack of OL in this upcoming class sets it back another year.  Hopefully we land the JUCO and Wire.

Although I agree with almost everything you said, do you REALLY think it was THAT bad? Held a high octain offense to 29 points and with a terrible start still put up 24 points with 0 run game? Against a team that is a playoff contender. I know 0 moral victories but I’m not done drinking the kool-aid just yet. I was hoping for 8 wins and that goal is still feasible. Yes when I see great progress and 2-0 in big 12 my goals we’re changing but in reality no one should get upset if we get to 8 W’s. The effort and intensity will get us thru the season. As for the O-Line all these young cats will have solid experience for 2018 season. Full speed ahead HOOK EM. Beat okie states ass and move on.

Yeah. It was that bad.  OU and SC would have been wins if UT had just an average OL. Also the D just gave up far too many big plays (D hadn't been doing that).

The O line is terrible your correct. OT sucks Herman has had the bad luck with injuries. I guess I’m agreeing with you since your saying with all our starters off the injury list UT is possibly undeafted. With the hand dealt though we still are pretty stout

1.  Lose games we are supposed to win:  Maryland

2.  Lose games we are supposed to lose:  USC and OU

3.  Win games we are supposed to win: SJSU, Iowa State, K-State

4.  Win games are supposed to Lose:  None

I am still waiting on #4.  We let USC and OU get away which should have been on that list.  OSU and TCU are our next opportunities.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Shane transfers out.    I think he knows what he is. A great passer but undersized and injury prone.  That's going to follow him wherever he goes unless he want's play Division 2 or 3 football.

While I believe this team is on the rise, I totally agree with you on this team needing a signature win this year.  They need to beat a ranked opponant for no other reason than to prove to themselves they can do it.  I'm kind of feeling that win coming this week against OSU.  I'm thinking the O and D come together this week.  They will need 30+ points to win, because OSU will get 4 TDs against almost anyone.

If Shane transfers, he transfers. There is almost no team that does not suffer a drastic drop off from 1st team QB to second team. I am not worried about that. I think the key to keeping Sam healthy is to get some continuity in the O Line.

Also, at some point we are going to have to address Boyd. I dont know if he will ever realize his potential, and the same goes for Brandon as well. Bonney doesnt have all those tools, but at least he knows what he is supposed to do.

If we win the remaining games we are supposed to and lose the ones we are supposed to then we are looking at 6-6.   TCU obviously is the biggest test but that is the one game we could potentially get blown out since its in Fort Worth and Patterson and crew loves to negative recruit us.  Hopefully it doesnt happen that way.

If we can manage W's vs WV and OSU then 8-4 it is.  Ill take that since we havent been above .500 the last 3 years.

Sick of losing to our little jesus brother.

No doubt.  Especially since they trash us in recruiting every year.  The scores have been lopsided for years:

  • 2016 Loss 31-9
  • 2015 Loss 50-7
  • 2014 Loss 48-10
