5 Thoughts Following The Loss to OU

This was a hard fought game right down to the end. The Longhorns came up short in the Cotton Bowl by a final score of 29-24. After coming out flat and letting Oklahoma sprint out to an early lead in the first half, the Longhorns navigated the comeback trail and were in a position to win the game.

At the end of the day, the Sooners made a few more plays than the Longhorns did and managed to squeak out a close one. These hard fought games have been par for the course for the past few years and it wasn’t any different today.

Here are some of the things on my mind as we put the Red River Showdown in the rearview mirror.

·         Tale of two halves for the defense

It was not pretty for Todd Orlando’s bunch in the first half. Baker Mayfield and the Sooner offense had their way early on in this contest and looked like this game was heading towards a blow out, but coming out of the half the defense got its act together. After giving up 20 points in the first half, the defense only allowed 9 in the second and unfortunately that came on a coverage bust that ended up being the difference.

While giving up 500 yards of offense will not making Orlando happy, the defense played better in the second half and gave the offense a chance to get back in sync and gave them a shot to win the game. That’s all you can ask for when you are going up against the one of the top offenses in the country.

·         The offensive line had a rough day at the office

When you are having to run two underclassmen tackles out there with your first team offensive line, you are likely going to face some issues. I had Ogbonnia Okoronkwo as a guy that was likely going to give the Texas offense issues today and it didn’t take him long to announce his presence today in the Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma moved him around all day in an attempt to get him singled up and along with him being a headache, Mike Stoops dialed up lots of pressure early and often that killed drives.

Oklahoma may only have tallied 3 sacks on the stat sheet, but they got plenty of pressure on Ehlinger and at times did it with as few as three rushers. That’s not going to get it done. If Texas doesn’t have a mobile quarterback in Ehlinger like they do it’s probably a lot worse than it was for this unit.

·         Communication and mental busts are still an issue in the secondary

We saw this a lot last year and while it hasn’t been as bad this year it is still an issue and it cost Texas more than once today in Dallas. Kris Boyd has as much talent as any defensive back Texas on the roster, but he is often on the wrong side of a big play. A move is going to have to be made here because the issues don’t seem to be resolving themselves and teams are going after Boyd every week.

The long touchdown to Andrews that proved to be the game winner seemed to be a miscommunication or flat out mental bust by Brandon Jones. Texas handed all the momentum they had just got right back to Oklahoma and they never were able to get it back.

·         Sam Ehlinger is a lot of  fun to watch

Definitely wasn’t Ehlinger’s most efficient game, but the true freshman still tallied 382 yards of total offense and made some big throws down the home stretch. Ehlinger already showed that he doesn’t flinch during the big moments against USC and he was at it again today in the Cotton Bowl.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Ehlinger is going to be really good for Texas, but I really hope they find a way to manufacture a run game outside of his legs, as he was the leading rusher by a long shot once again.

Ehlinger also gave every Longhorn fan a scare when his hand bounced off the turf along the Texas sideline, but fortunately he was fine and able to return to the game.

·         The love was spread around at wide receiver

Oklahoma made absolutely sure that Collin Johnson didn’t beat them today and they accomplished that mission. With that said, despite Johnson not being productive 7 different Texas receivers logged at least two receptions and Ehlinger connected with 9 different receivers throughout the game. That’s pretty ridiculous and shows the depth of the receiver position right now. Also, I love that Ehlinger does a good job of finding his running backs on check downs when there is nowhere to go down field. That proved to be valuable to the offense today.

The Longhorn offense isn’t perfect, but they got weapons and a quarterback that can utilize them and once they get clicking they will be a problem for the Big 12.

This is a game that will no doubt leave a bad taste in the mouths of the players and coaches because the game was there to be won late in regulation. With that said, I have to give credit to players and coaches for not cratering in the first half when it looked like Oklahoma could have ran away with it early.

The team showed some heart and poise to battle back and even though they came up short, that’s something you can appreciate and build off of. With this game behind them now, the Longhorns will have to rally the troops with Oklahoma State coming into Austin next week. It doesn’t get any easier with the Cowboys and their potent offense.

We have to get something going on the ground. Sam is a tough kid but he’s not built to run as much as he is. I’m becoming a little concerned about him being worn down by all of the carries and hits he is seeing.

OL, Secondary and kicker that the coach doesn’t have confidence in we’re the difference in this game. RBs did their job. QB & receiving corps as well. DL & LB provided pressure on Mayfield, but their failure to wrap up led to far too many YAC(ontact) plays by ou QB & RBs.

Mental breakdows in the secondary proved costly.

A game we we should have won slipped away.

This has been a theme the last 2 losses.  Playing from behind and beating ourselves with mistakes and penalties is getting stale.

Good read. At this point Texas is having to use the short passing game as a run game (just like the 2009 team had to do with Colt). If you go back and look at some of OU’s runs with guards and tackles pulling, the running lanes are huge. Texas needs to get to a point, whether it’s next year or in 2 years, where they aren’t having to manufacture a run game by running a QB 22 times.

I will break this down more in my defensive grades, but Texas did a terrible job of keeping contain on Mayfield for the majority of the game. Guys were just flying upfield and letting Mayfield step up in the pocket all game. With all the negative, it needs to be pointed out that Malik Jefferson is playing at an elite level right now.

Believe it was you DMAC but someome brought up about the reporter always asking about who the QB is goin to be... FINALLY in post game presser Herman admits even if Shane is 100% they’ll “probably” or most likely stick with Sam. But then retracted back to “practice”...As they should. But glad to finally here it. He has earned this position and will take us back to where UT belongs

Reporters get really annoying with that shit.

Until a few weeks ago Malik Jefferson had been a bust.  I do believe he is in much better form recently and beginning to consistently approach playing up to his potential.  If he continues to improve and compete at this level he might be a very fine pro some day although he is rather light to be a thumper.

Go watch film of Tommy Nobis or Mike Singletary.  That is elite.  MJ?  No friggin way.

I think I agree with the theory that Herman is trying to keep Shane engaged so that he does not transfer.  Anointing Sam the job for the next 3 1/2 years would almost certainly cause Shane to transfer if he wants to play QB in college.

Texas MUST get out of this true freshman funk at QB.  If Shane leaves, we have another year with a TF being one snap away from starting status.  An inadequate depth chart at QB is a coach killer and MENSA knows it.  The depth chart at QB played a large part in the last two coaches being ushered out the door.

Daniel.... this is exactly what it looked like.

I know you're not a mind reader, but as an ex-coach, how do you explain this... in THIS game?  Best guess.

Certainly they weren't flat, meaning just not interested in being there.  Over-hyped.... young players with dear in the headlights at the environment....  OU just faster / better than other teams they have faced??

I agree with the quote above, I'm just really interested to grasp the phycology of how it could happen.

Was very proud that the team fought back to almost win this game, but in the end we could not run the ball and to me that was the difference.  The O-Line continues to perform as best they can under extreme conditions due to the number of injuries.  With a few more years of recruiting more depth  for the O-Line then I think Texas will be back to 10 win seasons.  I agree that it is fun to watch Sam , but he cannot be our leading rusher each and every game as it will take a toll on him.   Several tough games ahead and to me this will be the test for if we are progressing or not.  WV, TCU, Okie St, TT , at most we need to win two of these and to have the program build momentum we need to at least win 3 of the 4 .  This will not be easy!

I was worried when I saw them after the first few possessions.  Our boys didnt look pumped up or into it, especially for this being THE game.

It wasn't just mistakes.  We were sleep walking.

-- Mayfield had 6 seconds in the pocket to throw that first TD.  That is too long to ask any secondary to cover.

-- They were popping 6-10 yards a run in the first quarter.

-- Our offense was inept. We had a whopping 35 yards total in the first 4 possessions compared to ou had 227 in just the first 3.

Be proud and thump our chest about coming back?  Not me.  This was HoeU.  This was not Kansas State.

As Echeese said "We are not aggies there are no moral victories."

Tom Herman gets it.  Post game PC - "There are no moral victories especially against these guys"

Even the hapless ags were claiming moral victories because they scored more points on Bama than the rest of the SEC combined in their FAILED comeback..

So please let's leave the moral victories for the ags.

There is one thing that keeps eating at me and that is Herman keeps saying they need to find ways  to get Carter and Young more touches.  He says they do everything practice asked of them, but then they get limited touches (Carter) or no touches (Young).  This line needs a back that's going to hit the hole fast because the they can't hold their blocks.  CW3 doesn't hit the hole fast enough.

Beck said in his last PC that Drayton puts in the back he thinks is best suited for the play.

Porter deserves credit he definitely played the best I have seen him to date.  He ran harder and wasnt tackled every run by the first contact.

I want to see Carter with more off tackle runs and screens.
