2024 Recruiting Board/Thread

NIL and the portal are game changers. I don't think you can accurately compare recruiting now with any other time.

Even with 3 times the NIL money of other schools, if Texas goes after 5 5* recruits and 10 4* recruits, you have to split the pot. A team like Tech can go all in on the only 5* considering them.

Look at the aggies #1 recruiting class. Where are they now? The portal can shred a class.

For me, it's all about development. You can get all the 5*s but if you can't develop them then so what? Let's see how many get drafted and play in the NFL.

Sark values culture fit and coachability in addition to the things you can see on film. I suspect that's why there occasionally appears to be a lack of interest in some highly ranked prospects. He also doesn't seem attracted to recruits who overvalue NIL because they're not necessarily interested in Texas for the right reasons. It's a delicate balance that's not always evident to those of us on the sidelines.

I do not know that you have to play the game to evaluate players. But do know you do not have to play the game to be a good coach.

Always hated the spin down, recruit to the position. However IMO speed kills on thefootball field. Espically at key positions

This sounds like the kind of thing we make fun of the Ags for saying. There are plenty of highly rated guys that we went hard after and just didn't get. Probably we just mis-allocated NIL, or got into bidding wars with schools who were willing to go higher. So this class will have some positions that are a little weak, at least on paper. I'm sure some of the lower-rated guys we sign will pan out, but plenty won't. Hopefully lessons have been learned for next year's class, which should be outstanding if this season goes the way I think it will.

And while I'm generally happy with this staff's recruiting, I'm not sure I can yet say with confidence that they are good evaluators. How many players that this staff recruited out of HS are starting now? I can come up with 5 (Banks, Campbell, Worthy, Burke, T Brooks). If you include backups who play a lot I got 6 more (Hutson, Baxter, D Williams, Muhammad, Hill, Finkley). And note that only 2 of those guys (Burke, Hutson) were outside of the top-100 recruits. So not a lot of evidence yet that the staff is great at identifying underrated players.
I can create a rather large post listing names of 5-stars who never did squat, clear back to Edorian McCollough.

You can keep your eyes fixed on the 9.95'ers, I will pay attention to who Sark and PK want.

By the way, Nick Saban wants the best players he can find. Why are so many of those 3 stars? Probably because he is less of an evaluator than Ketch is. lol

Likely not a coincidence with the news that Wingo is headed for Mizzou, but Hamilton at IT is raving about this JUCO WR today out of Mississippi.

It seems like he's hinting Texas is about to get involved, but multiple big offers are expected to come his way with Ole Miss as his current leader.

Good words!

This question may require too much detail for a quick answer... but it is a genuine question. Regarding the red portion above.... how much control does a coach have over what NIL money is allocated where? I was under the understanding that coaches were to completely keep out of this (as if rules matter in recruiting). In other words wouldn't it be a violation for a coaching staff to "go all in" on a recruit when it comes to allocation of NIL monies?

He passes the HUDL test.... that's for sure.

But of the ones you mentioned, how many are Freshman and Sophomores? All of them except Worthy which speaks to not only evaluation but also fairly rapid development. Additionally, Sweat, Sorrell, Ford, Ewers, Majors, Jones, and Sanders have all improved over the last two years and are now discussed as draftable which has not been the case for over a decade at Texas.

Another note to remember is that many Texas fans were wringing their hands the previous two years only to be fairly pleased come mid-December when signing day actually happened. There are lots of reasons recruits choose to come or not. Wingo is a Mo. kid who has seen his home school blow up out of nowhere, others may like used car salesman, and some may not like the staff or feel they can receive rapid playing time. If the last two years have shown anything of this staff, it is that they recruit better than any of the last two and very differently than Mack ever did. Okay, that is two things. Just one message board poster's opinion.
I'm not knocking the staff, I think they've been outstanding. The roster is very strong, they've hit homeruns in the portal, and development has been a strong-suit. I'm just objecting to the knee-jerk reaction that every time we lose a recruit it's due to lack of fit, or preferring some lower-rated guy, or because we have a "plan". Sometimes we just lose. Even though we're the Joneses, we can't outbid every school for every player. So when we miss on a McKinley or a Hudson or a Wingo we have to pivot to plan B, and we don't have to act like that was the plan all along.

This staff signs both more 5-stars and more 3-stars than I'm used to (at least when we're winning). And maybe that's the right approach in the portal era: swing for the fences, and when you miss take a developmental project. 5-stars caliber players are hard to find in the portal, but 4-stars aren't, so see which of the developmental guys pan out and replace the rest.

C'mon SHA. You've been following recruiting long enough to know that, while not every 5* pans out, the teams that win nattys invariably are loaded with them. Nobody wins in the SEC with a bunch of diamonds in the rough. I'm happy to trust the staff on some developmental flyers, but any position group where we aren't signing mostly top-200 players should be cause for concern.

I don't get your comment about Saban. He's signed the #1 rated class in 10 of the last 14 years I believe. He's the poster child for loading up on 5* recruits, and winning a lot of games as a result.

Even with 3 times the NIL money of other schools,

This is a myth. Texas is struggling raising NIL money. The Texas one Fund currently only has around 600 monthly regular donors. I would guess over 90% of Texas fans are giving nothing to NIL and this includes many of our BMD...

Are we really have the stars don't matter debate? Do you think Georgia , Bama and Clemson have dominated CFB the past decade with 3 and 4 stars? Those teams have the most 5 stars and high 4 stars of anyone according to the pay site rankings.....Stars matter.

Alabama only has 10 three stars on their roster. They have 18 five stars and 56 four stars

Texas has 18 commitments so for. 12 or 2/3 of them are 3*. Ala. has 20 commitments and 9 are 3*. Big precentage difference.

IMO that s the way Geo. replaced Ala. out recruited them.
