Sahuaro ready for 'measuring-stick game' against fellow unbeaten Salpointe Catholic, star Bijan Robinson

At 6-0, Sahuaro is nobody’s idea of an underdog. The Cougars have outscored their opponents 231-70, after all, and carry a No. 7 ranking in the Open Division for state playoffs.
Still, Sahuaro remains a longshot to win Friday night. Consider who they play — Salpointe Catholic, undefeated at 4-0 and ranked No. 2 in the Open Division.
“I actually like being the underdog,” senior wide receiver and defensive back Jordan Bunting said. “We talked about being the underdogs this week and being a blue-collar team this season. We’ve been focusing on this game all year long.”

Sahuaro will try to slow down running back Bijan Robinson — a task defenses across the state are learning is not easy.
Robinson, a future Texas Longhorn, rushed eight times for 282 yards against Tucson High last weekend. The performance moved him ahead of former Canyon del Oro and UA standout Ka’Deem Carey as the leading rusher in Southern Arizona history.

“The key is just keeping them in front and trying to limit the big plays that they get,” Sahuaro defensive coordinator Brian Graves said. “It hasn’t been done yet, but we’re gonna try and go out there and make it happen.”
Robinson has justifiably received much attention, but Sahuaro has a stellar ground game, too. The Cougars have a three-headed attack that might be the best combination in the state.
Senior Izaiah Davis and juniors Jamir Gasaway and Trevion Watkins have combined to rush for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, although Davis’ status is up in the air after he missed last week’s game against Sunnyside.
“The offense has been doing their thing,” Gasaway said. “The run game has been clicking well and regardless of who plays we just have to do our job and embrace the next man up.”

MuteEarlier this week, Salpointe coach Dennis Bene called the Sahuaro backs “outstanding.”

“We just have to be very physical at the point of attack,” Bene said. “Our defense is a very good tackling defense. We’re very fast. Any time their kids have the football, you’re going to see a lot of Salpointe helmets around him, that’s for sure.”

For Sahuaro, Friday’s matchup is a chance to measure itself against one of the best teams in the state and exact a little revenge. The Lancers defeated the Cougars 53-6 last season in the state semifinals. They led 34-0 after the first quarter and 53-0 at halftime.
That performance left a bad taste in the mouths of Sahuaro’s players.
“It’s definitely a game we’ve had circled for a while,” senior Izaiah Grigsby said, who won 10 games last season as the Cougars’ starting quarterback before moving to defense. “For me, being quarterback last year, I’m trying to show the defense where receivers are going to be going. Knowing how a quarterback works and where he’s going with the ball from last season helped a lot.”

Sahuaro’s Izaiah Davis stiff-arms his way past Sabino’s Ethan Alegria as he rips off big yardage on a second quarter run in their game at Sahuaro High School. Sahuaro relies on a three-man rushing attack this season.

More than bragging rights and a chance at a spot in the Open Division will be on the line Friday night, with potential seeding in the Class 4A state playoffs up for grabs should either team not advance to the new Open Division playoffs. Salpointe is tops in the Class 4A poll released by the AIA on Tuesday, with Sahuaro sitting at No. 2.
The Cougars have another tough matchup looming next week when they travel to CDO, the No. 4 seed in the division. First, however, is the game Sahuaro has been waiting all season to play.
“It’s the measuring-stick game,” Graves said. “As far as Tucson goes, (Salpointe’s) as good as it gets. You find out where you’re at by playing those kinds of teams. We’ll find out where we’re at on Friday night and the things we need to work on and improve to make another deep run and hopefully win a state championship.”

Texas’ 2020 recruiting class consists of 20 prospects and ranks fifth in the country. The top-ranked class in the Big 12 isn’t likely to reach the full allotment of 25 signees, as even head coach Tom Herman acknowledged that a lack of attrition in the program means fewer scholarships available on the recruiting trail. Still, there are a few spots remaining in the cycle. Here are three possible future Longhorns:

Cedar Creek defensive lineman Alfred Collins (99) rushes across the lineagainst the Akin Eagles during the third quarter at the non-district football game on Sept 5, 2019, at the Toney Burger Stadium. [JOHN GUTIERREZ/FOR STATESMAN]

Alfred Collins, defensive line, Bastrop Cedar Creek

FYI: 6-6/275; 4 stars; No. 14 on the Fabulous 55

Top schools: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma

The latest: The Austin-area star continues to grow in size and recruiting stature. He’s up 45 pounds since his junior season and is approaching 6-7. The former basketball player kept his athleticism and is in the conversation for being the best defensive lineman in the state for 2020. He can play defensive tackle or defensive end in an odd-man front.

Texas is the clear leader and Collins is the undisputed top priority for Herman’s staff. Landing him would give Texas pledges from the state’s three best defensive linemen with Collins, Vernon Broughton and Princely Umanmielen.

Collins is taking his time with the recruiting process and was steadfast that he’d take official visits to multiple schools before deciding on a destination. He took an official to Oklahoma and Alabama in September. He’ll be at Texas A&M on Oct. 11 and in Austin on Oct. 18.

Jaqwondis Burns, outside linebacker, IMG Academy (Fla.)

FYI: 6-2/205; 3 stars; No 37-ranked outside linebacker

Top schools: Committed to Ole Miss

The latest: Burns is a new name on Texas’ radar; he picked up an offer on Wednesday. The three-star outside linebacker pledged to Ole Miss back in April. Herman’s staff wouldn’t have extended an offer to Burns unless the Longhorns felt like they have a shot at flipping him. Burns is a Texas native who was a first-team all-district selection at Terrell as a junior.

Texas doesn’t hold a commitment from a true linebacker in the 2020 class, though four-star Highland Park product Prince Dorbah is expected to transition from prep defensive end to college B-backer. Burns is the top target unless the Longhorns can sway Houston Cypress Creek four-star outside linebacker Josh White away from his LSU commitment.

Kelvontay Dixon, athlete, Carthage

FYI: 6-0/180; 3 stars; No. 21-ranked athlete

Top schools: Committed to Arkansas

The latest: The family ties to Texas might be too strong for Dixon and the Longhorns to resist each other despite his commitment. His older brother is Keaontay Ingram, Texas’ starting running back. Dixon is listed as an athlete. Texas wants him at slot receiver. The explosive prospect would bring more athleticism to the position. Dixon picked Arkansas back in the summer, but a renewed push by Texas combined with the struggles at Arkansas could make Texas the favorite.

Derrick Harris Jr.
: “It’s going to be a tough battle for the Texas secondary, but I think after last week’s game, they’re going to have a bunch of momentum coming from that game. Texas wins in a close game.”

Theodore Knox

Jordon Thomas
: “Texas, their defense is superb. I don't think their wide receivers are ready for DBU; also the defensive line is going to be on fire.

Malcom Roach
is going to get three or more sacks and the offense will move the ball with Sam (Ehlinger) at quarterback. I feel it’s going to be 42-25. I’m not going to lie, that big quarterback will throw the ball as well.”

Bryce Anderson
: “I’m going with Texas, 39-32. Texas has been playing at a very high level lately after the loss to LSU. Their offense is rolling and I’m looking forward to watching.”

Reuben Fatheree
: “Can’t call the score, but it should definitely be a great game. They are always good games and actually, I don’t see this one being any different.”

Emeka Megwa
: “I know it’s gonna be a close one.”

Donovan Green
: “Don't really know who will win. Two great teams playing at a high level right now. I really like Texas, but Oklahoma is growing on me tough. It’ll be a shootout for sure and a high-scoring game.”

Brandon Campbell
: "I think it’s going to be a tight one, though I don’t think any team will really break away. I feel like it’s going to come down to the last couple of possessions."

I went to the Salpointe game on Friday and it was a real treat to watch Bijan up close. Here are some of my thoughts on the game and Bijan. It was 51-7 at half time, so I and practically everyone there left at the half. I was able to sit on the 50 yard line with some Salponte fans. One of them ask me if I was a scout since I was wearing my longhorn shirt. I laughed and said no just a longhorn fan.

I was also fortunate that a number of Bijan plays in the second quarter was on my side of the field and right in front of me. The best way I can describe Bijan is that he has the same style of running as Reggie Bush. Bijan has said Reggie is his idol, so either he copied Reggie or his talents matched. He's an inch or two taller than Reggie and right now they weight the same. I would think that Bijan will add at least ten to  to fifteen pounds since that seems to be what most running backs gain in the UT weight program.  He has great vision to find the hole and the quickness to hit the opening and once he gets pass the line of scrimmage then he's a threat to take it all the way.  I would think that since Bijan will weight more than Reggie did that if the longhorns ever play for the NC and it's 4th and one to win the game then I doubt Bijan will be standing on the sidelines like Reggie did.

Bijan's high school coach has said that's he one of the top running backs in the country as far as catching the football. One play he lined up all the way to the sideline took a step back and took a pass and ran for 26 yards. The other was a 42 yard hail mary pass that Bijan caught at the goal line for a TD with 1.4 seconds left in the half. My expectations is that Bijan will leave the forty acres as the top  running back in receptions and receiving yardage.

One of the reasons Bush won the Heisman over Vince was not only did he have good rushing yards (1740 yards) but he also had receiving yards (478 yards) KO returns (493 yards) and punt returns (179 yards). If the coaches decide they want to use Bijan, and ignore the injury risk, on KO returns and punt returns then he will be devastating on the return teams. He returned a punt on Friday and he looked like Rick Grimes running through a crowd of zombies from Walking Dead. He has the ability to make cuts on a dime. One of the Salpointe fans was amazed on what he just saw and he has seen Bijan for the last four years.

Bijan had  a 45 yard run in the first quarter that the crowd reaction was something that I have never heard. It was a combination of a shriek and gasp that your seeing something that you don't ordinary see on a football field. Every time he touches the ball is a potential high light reel which will give the program more national interest besides winning.

One of the Salpointe fans told me that  El Paso Valle Verde  cancelled the Salpointe game not because they had a scheduling conflict, but they didn't want to lose to Salpointe again. He said they chickened out. LOL.

My expectations is that Bijan has as much talent as any running back that's ever been at UT including Earl and Ricky. Bijan won't have the power that Earl and Ricky had, but he has great vision to find the hole and the quickness to go through it and take it all the way, plus he can catch, return punts and kickoffs and he has said himself the importance of blocking.  I have a lot of respect for the running backs we do have now when they are healthy, however I expect Bijan will be the most talented running back when he comes on campus and it will be only a matter of time before he's the best running back on the team.

I had read an article in which Bijan said that Herman started to cry when he committed to UT which I wasn't use to hearing, however after seeing Bijan up close I can understand. He's a special player.
