2017 Orange-White Spring Game Thread

Loved the 4th and goal drill at the end to break the tie. Everything is about competition with this staff.
I love that he wasn't satisfied with a tie! Also love watching the losing team (and coaches) run gassers afterwards. Losing has consequences!

Orange-White Spring Game Quotes – April 15, 2017

Head Coach Tom Herman

Opening statement: Excited that we came out of it injury-free. That’s fairly unusual for a spring game. So I was happy to see that and really excited to see our guys flying around and respond. Sometimes different sides of the ball were down by quite a few points and the other side responded. That was not rigged to be a tight game. The Orange team was comfortably ahead with the first defense out there against the second offense. Sam Ehlinger threw a touchdown to L.J. Humphrey kind of put the White team back in it, so it was good to see them respond even with the twos. The first drive by the first offense set the tone not only offensively, because there were a couple big plays and obviously scored a touchdown, but defensively too. We had guys flying around, some big hits. Chris Brown had a big hit, even though it was an explosive play for the offense. It was really good to see guys flying around and going to the echo of the whistle. I was happy with that, pleased with the progress we’ve made throughout the entirety of spring practice.

Thank God we don’t have to play tomorrow. We’ve made strides. Really the only goal from spring practice was to learn how to practice, learn what the expectations are in this program, and learn that there’s no such thing as just another day in this program. When you walk in those doors, it is fourth-and-inches. When you leave, whatever it is, whether it’s a workout or a meeting or a practice, you should be mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. If you’re not, you’re doing it wrong. You’re doing it wrong. You’re football-ing wrong. So I think our guys understand that. They believe it. Now the consistent execution of that is still a work in progress. The buy-in is probably the most difficult part, and we’ve gotten that for the most part from a lot of guys. Now it’s just a matter of the execution consistently of that intensity from the time you step in the building until the time you put your head down on the pillow.

On his desire for another quarterback and whether he is ready to name Shane Buechele as starter: We need more than two scholarship quarterbacks, that’s for sure, and we’re going to try to do that. You can’t wave a magic wand and one shows up. The circumstances have to line up. And as far as Shane being the starter, no way. I think a healthy fear of losing your job is just that – healthy. Shane knows we have a lot of confidence in him, and Shane did a lot of things really, really well this spring. But to say that he’s won the job in 12 padded practices when he doesn’t even get hit, that would be premature.

On whether anything surprised him and if anybody played harder in front of fans: They better not be. Then they’ve cheater their team for 14 practices if they’re more intense today than any other day in spring practice. We don’t have gamers, we have “practicers.” There’s no such thing in this program as a gamer. If you’re a gamer and don’t practice hard, you don’t play, so no one will ever know if you’re a gamer or not. The pleasant surprise to me was the crowd. People had been preparing me and setting my expectations maybe a bit too low. It’s certainly not where we want it to be. There are teams across the country that are selling out their spring games and there’s not a seat in the house. But to see that many people here certainly exceeded my expectations. Hopefully they had a good time. At some point here in the very near future, we’re going to have that thing 100 percent sold out as well.

On the pass rushers: Really, throughout the spring pleasantly surprised with the first team defensive line. You can win with Malcolm Roach, Chris Nelson and definitely Poona Ford – he’s the hardest playing guy we have on our football team. You can win with those guys. The problem is, defensive guys can’t play 70-80 snaps a game. They get worn down, they get tired. The pass rush becomes non-existent at the end of the game, so you have to develop your second group. A guy that’s come along in the last week or so has been Jordan Elliott. He’s playing a lot tougher, a lot more physical. But we need the rest of those guys to be able to give us 20-30 snaps throughout the course of the game.

On what inspired him to begin the game with a bull-in-the-ring drill and end the game with a sudden death play:  Competition. We compete in everything that we do. I heard the PA announcer say the game has ended 51-51 in a tie. We don’t have ties in this program. There’s no such thing. We’re going to keep going until a winner declares themselves. So that was neat to see. I think anytime you can get guys in the circle drill and display some physicality and toughness in a competitive setting is always good to set the tone for the scrimmage.

On freshman running back Toneil Carter: Well, he put the ball in the ground. It’s hard to ignore that. And he missed a protection on third down with a guy that sacked. But beyond that, for a kid that’s supposed to be picking out his tuxedo and thinking up crazy ways to ask his girl to the prom, he’s going to be a really good player if he stays on this course. But being the only scholarship guy, obviously we set unbelievably high expectations for him because otherwise, who are we going to play? A couple of the negative things certainly stand out in my mind. But if you take a step back and realize where he’s at – he’s played college football for not even 12 padded practices because he was hurt for a couple – the future is bright if he stays the course.

On the new lockers and the future of Texas facilities: It just says that we’re committed to providing our student athletes with the best training facility in the country or as possible. We’re a bit constricted from a landlocked standpoint at times. But we’re going to make this facility as state-of-the-art and as first-class as we can. There will be no reason, from a facilities standpoint, for a recruit to want to go somewhere else.

On the tempo of the game and the final play: I liked the tempo. It’s a lot easier to play with good tempo and rhythm when you’re making first downs. The first offense did that quite frequently, so they got into a good rhythm. I think they played like 15 more snaps than the second offense/ first defense just because the one defense was getting a lot of three-and-outs, which is to be expected and that happens. But yes, I was very proud of the defense for going up there at the end. Whether they knew it or not or paid attention to the scoreboard, the White team went up by three and they needed to happen exactly what happened for them to be in that boat: a sack, which was two points, and then a stopped drive, which was one point. Three points tied it up, which then sent it into sudden death. If there was a side of the ball I was rooting for, it was definitely the defense.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck

On Sam Ehlinger: I thought Sam played well. I don’t evaluate his performance based on other people. I’ll evaluate what Sam did based on what I need Sam to do. I thought for the most part he played pretty well. I know of a couple mistakes that he made. Just systematic mistakes but he’ll correct them.

On Shane Buechele: I saw growth in him. The things we require our quarterback to do and to be is different for him and for what he was asked to do and to be last year. It is a process and he is in that process right now. He hasn’t arrived by any means but he is growing as a quarterback and what we need him doing.

On the right tackles: I think those guys are getting better. I thought they were the group that showed the biggest improvement from the first day to the last day. We had a few injuries and changes moving guys around and trying to find the right fit. That group has to work like an orchestra. They have to work together and as we made some changes and when we look at guys to do different things, that disrupts that. So I thought for the most part that group played hard but there are mistakes we are going to have to correct.

Defensive Coordinator Todd Orlando

On the defensive backs: They are really sharp guys, they enjoy being around each other, and they are really competitive. That’s what you want in the spring. The spring is where you find out who cares the most and who is the toughest guys you have. We’re excited to see these guys go into summer conditioning and see what Coach Mcknight can do. When he gives them back to us in fall camp I think they will be different players.

On the linebackers: I’d like to see more. Honestly I’ve been accustomed to having guys that dominate that position and we are a work in progress. They care, they want to be good, but there are some things we have to clean up. It’s going to take some time. We’re going to have to work like crazy during the summer time and going into fall camp. That’s real talk. I’m not going to sit here and say we’re playing at an elite level.

Senior LB Naashon Hughes

On the defensive performance today: For the most part it’s what I wanted to see. There were a couple of plays here and there that were bad. Some guys made some great catches so I can’t get too mad or upset about that.

On the environment of the spring game: I’m glad the fans showed up. Last spring it was raining so we cut it short. To play a full game today was better than what it has been in the past. Seeing legends like that playing against the fans to interact with former players I think it helps build the atmosphere.

Junior DB PJ Locke

On the defensive running on the field every play: Coach Herman tells us the way the defense takes the field dictates what types of plays they are going to call. So if the defense takes the field dragging, they are going to throw shots at us. So if we take the field aggressive, that’s going to make the offensive coordinator pull back.

On how the defense has changed: Just growing up and knowing the game is slowing down and having more experience. We are buying into the context clues that they give us. The whole scheme is different. But when you have experience like having a bunch of reps, you are able to relax a little bit.

Sophomore RB Kyle Porter

On his injury: I'm doing pretty good. It was real hard to watch, just trying to help as much I can with the coaches and the other guys.

On his spring: It was a good spring. I learned a lot from Coach Drayton and Coach Herman and Coach Beck. They taught us a lot in terms of new offense, being physical in general. So it was a good spring.

On if coaches asked him to step up while other RBs are injured: I wouldn't say they asked a lot, they just asked to do my role at the best I could. So that's all I really did.

On if he's made growth first offseason at Texas: Absolutely. Last year I felt like a freshman out there. I just feel more in-tune to the game and understand what I need to do.

Junior OL Connor Williams

On how everyone on roster makes impact: Like you said, everybody does make an impact. If it's the second string pushing the first string, or the third string pushing the second string, we're all just trying to get better. We're all pushing each other to at the end of the day be the best that we can.

On what offensive line needs to work on: There's nothing in particular, I think it's just coming out here together everyday and working together. I feel like this spring has really grown as a unit, grown as a family, and just become one, whether it's the first team or the first team and the second team together. We're really one unit right now.

On having a new coaching staff: Every coaching staff has their strategies, but Herman really emphasizes competition and emphasizes love for one another so you're always competing, and you're not competing for yourself, you're competing for the love of your teammates. When you get tired you have to dig deep and do it for the love of your teammates.

On if this spring is more about psychology than Xs and Os: They're training our minds more than anything. They're training our mind, training our attitude. They want to trust the people that run out on the field.

Senior DL Poona Ford

On his message to recruits: It's pretty much nothing but success from here on out, pretty much. Texas is the place to be. We're going to start showing it, like everyone else, what it's supposed to be.

On what new lockers show recruits: Yeah it was for recruitment. If you see that, and if I'm still in high school, at my high school every male sports team shared a locker room and one field house, so if I see that coming out of high school, I'm going to be like, 'Dang, that's pretty sweet.' That could be the reason they commit here or something like that.

On if lockers could convince recruits to come to Texas: Yeah, everything matters. As far as from the facilities to if you get along with the person and whatnot.

On suggestions to recruits for what to look for in a program: I feel like if you committed, you should stay committed, but if not, just take all your visits. And actually ask questions about the university, the football program, strength and conditioning, and all that stuff.

One of my biggest gripes about LHN is that I literally have no way to watch the games on it. ESPN geo lock it so people outside of the USA cant watch it online and they make it even more difficult by making you have a USA cable subscription.

It means i cant ever watch the spring game and 3-4 games a year.
