2017 Orange-White Spring Game Thread

Like seeing the deeper throws first thing out. No 5 and outs like we been living off of

Was hoping to get a glimpse of Sam but with the 2nd team O line I don't see that happening. That or our first team D is that solid. Hoping for the latter

Buechele gets the benefit of playing with the ones, but he is looking very sharp out there. First team O is moving the ball, but needs to finish drives.

Thought Herman's explanation for the locker design was pretty awesome. Basically said take whatever A&M did with their lockers and make it better. Said that without saying Texas A&M though. Referred to them as a "school near us".

Collin is a game changer for us. Need to get burt to that level and we will be a force to be reckoned with

First half takeaways:

1. Collin Johnson is beast and is poised for a big year.

2. Reggie Hemphill looks better than I expected so far.

3. Buechele is clearly ahead of Ehlinger right now in my book, but I want to see Ehlinger with the ones to get a clearer picture.

4. I'm concerned about the depth on the OL. Second team hasn't held up well against the ones.

5. Toneil Carter doesn't look nearly as quick or fast to me out there. I'm still concerned about the RB position all things considered.

6. Jeff McCulloch had a nice sack against future first round pick Connor Williams. He's going to make some plays this year.

McCulloch should and probably will be starting over Hughes.

I have a lot of notes I'm going to drop after the game with my take aways. Lots of good from the 1st teams which should make Longhorn fans optimistic.

Hemphill-Mapps has looked good today. Would have been great if not for 2 drops.

LJ Humphrey just made a grown man catch on Kris Boyd and Deshon Elliott. He's going to be a beast.

Take Aways

Offense

·        Shane Buechele is your starting QB. He has looked very crisp today minus a few mess ups. His progression from year 1 to 2 is going to be fun. Especially because he'll be behind a great OL throwing to some great WRs. His balls have had some speed behind them and have been to the right spots.

·        Sam Ehlinger has been difficult to evaluate today since he's been running for his life. When he does have time he has been able to step up in the pocket and deliver an impressive ball to the right spots, including a perfect pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey in between Kris Boyd and DeShon Elliott

·        Toneil Carter looks good all things considered. He's far from your starter, needing to work on picking up blitzes and reading the field on runs.

·        1st team OL is as good as advertised. They've kept Shane Buechele relatively untouched and made the 4th string RB and walk-on look good.

·        2nd team OL has a huge drop off. Sam Ehlinger is running for his life.

·        This WR is absolutely loaded.

·        Reggie Hemphill-Mapps has been very impressive with his ability to find the soft spots in the coverage. Still needs to work on his hands a bit.

·        Collin Johnson will catch a lot of TDs next year. He's shown how much of an athletic freak he is and has some really great hands.

·        Jerrod Heard is still as good as last year, but gotten better on shorter routes.

·        Davion Curtis is a guy you can rely on. His progression is coming along nicely. He may get some play time this year

·        Lil"Jordan Humphrey has been very impressive, catching most balls that went his way including an insane catch over the head of Kris Boyd and through a DeShon Elliott hit.

·        Dorian Leonard looks like he's picking up from where he left off.

·        John Burt looks like hes getting back to Freshman year form.

·        Devin Duvernay looks as good as he does last year. Reliable hands, elite speed, and great route running.

Defense

·        For a "vanilla" defense they showed a good number of blitzes and coverages.

·        1st team defense has been lights out. Recording 9 sacks and 1 interception.

·        Charles Omenihu and Jeffrey McCulloch were the shining spots for the 2nd team defense.

·        1st team DL gave Sam Ehlinger no room to breathe. Chris Nelson, Malcolm Roach, and Poona Ford will hold down that DL. Fans should be very comfortable with those 3 up front.

·        Chris Nelson especially looked nice. He flashed quite a few time during the game grabbing quite a few sacks.

·        Jordan Elliott also grabbed 2 sacks and looks like he’ll be getting quite a bit of playing time come Fall.

·        2nd team DL looked alright. Got to Shane a few times and blew up a few plays.

·        LBs looked good as well on both lines.

·        Malik Jefferson is still a freak.

·        Naashon Hughes blew up a few plays fast. Looks like the B-Backer position fits him very nicely.

·        Edwin Freeman has a few nice plays on the blitzes, which is new for him since he's usually good in coverage.

·        Andrew Fitzgerald showed up quite a bit, including getting a nice sack, but he still looks to be a year away.

·        1st team DBs were impressive against good WRs. Caused a few coverage sacks and had a few PBUs. Deshon Elliott and PJ Locke were the stand outs.

·        2nd team DBs were a huge drop off. Eric Cuffee was picked on all day and couldn't do anything with it. They were missing Davante Davis.

ST

·        Michael Dickson still has a cannon for a leg. It's ridiculous.

·        Joshua Rowland did well. He'll be an okay kicker. He was 3-4. Made two from 30 yards, but missed one from 49. Had enough leg behind the one he missed, but sailed left.

·        Jerrod Heard should be your starting PR. He seems to have a lot more returning IQ back there.
