2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

No McFarland

No Swaim

Clarington better qualify

If not, all we have at TE is ex-LB Andrew Beck (sophomore) and Blake Whiteley (RS sophomore)

Possibly Jake Oliver (if he is not one of the transfers)

And perhaps a medical redshirt for Greg Daniels is possible?
I hear they are going to give Louis Brown a shot when he arrives. They want to see him on both sides of the ball, on the end of the line.

Don't count on Oliver being here.

Beck may have to swing back to LB if things don't go well over there.

It won't make a huge difference. TE has been nonexistent for years. As long as Beck and Whiteley can block half way decently, there won't be a downgrade at all. ....

I dont have much idea what either Beck or Whitely brings

Have you ever seen one of them catch a pass?

Do anything?

Connor WIlliams played TE in high school

He said he would be back and he is not one of the potential names I see floating around (all speculation)

They can't be worse than McFarland and Swaim in the passing game.

McFarland was a good blocker but certainly not great. Swaim was a very good blocker IMO. The only thing that worries me to a degree is the blocking. Granted, Whiteley looked like a pretty good blocker on his highlight reel coming out of JUCO ball. I personally think Texas will also try to use the FBs more next year since both guys return.

Have I seen much of  Whiteley and Beck, not really. Regardless, based on past production there won't be a big downgrade even if it's Case McCoy playing tight end. I do think Whiteley is an overall better TE prospect than McFarland and Swaim.

One more idea on the schollies is that if one or more of the transfers were part of the 2014 class (like Terrell Cuney, Garrett Gray, Dorian Leonard  for example) then I think we could count Tim Irvin against the 2014 class since he will be, if he signs, an EE.  Right now, we already have 6 EEs who should all be on campus and enrolled.  Irvin was going to count against the 2015 class, even though he is also an EE, because we already used those maximum 6 possible EEs spots against the 2014 class.  So, one more spot in the 2015 class seems possible to me with those conditions (1) One of the purported transfers is from the 2014 class and (2) Irvin makes it.  It's too late for us to get anyone else in as an EE other than him.

Something Nahlin said rings true in my mind and is an excellent point, IMO. I remember when this happened, too. When Jerrod Heard was a senior and Mack was retired, Urban Meyer made a push to get Heard to flip to tOSU. Heard was too sold on UT to budge but it shows that the man who just had his third string QB win the NC, he had his sights set on Heard. Urban knows QBs. We have a good one in store with Heard.

But can he run a pro style?

We don't really run pro style. I know it is popular to say that. Ironically we "attempt" to run a similar offense to what Meyers runs. However you need a really good OL and a competent QB.

Anyone up on Daniels' plans?

Had knee surgery (in August I think).  He was coming off shoulder surgery when that happened (missed last Spring too)

And I think he has graduated already

edit -- looks like he cant.  Took regular redshirt as freshman and played 8 games (all STs it appears) in 2014

I wonder how Longhorn nation is going to feel if Strong decides Heard is not the guy?

I too will be disappointed but I think Strong knows how good Heard is and can be. It's my understanding that when he took the Texas job, one of his top priorities, if not the top one, was to keep Heard committed to Texas. I'm sure they had his tape at Louisville.

BON did a positive piece in Nov about Beck's move to TE  http://www.burntorangenation.com/football/2014/11/13/7212379/andrew-beck-tight-end-linebacker-texas-longhorns-shawn-watson

He finished the season with zero receptions

.....In an effort to evaluate the different skill sets of each freshman on campus, the coaches typically put them through NFL Combine-style drills. One of those is a cross-field catch drill that includes six balls fired at the player, requiring strong hand-eye coordination to catch them in rapid succession while moving.

It didn't take long for play caller Shawn Watson to pick Beck out of the group as the one with the best hand-eye coordination of them all, sending Watson racing across the field to head coach Charlie Strong.

"I started politicking right away," Watson said on Tuesday. "I ran up to Charlie and say 'Hey, 47 has got unbelievable hands, and he can run.' At that time, we were good at back, but we needed some depth at tight end."

Convincing Strong to give up a linebacker might not have been the easiest thing to do -- the Louisville offer clearly indicates that the head coach believed Beck could play the position at a high level.

But he obviously relented and Beck made the move to tight end during fall camp.

"He was really a perfect fit for what we'd like to do with our moving tight end," said Watson.

The impact at tight end didn't come immediately, however. Beck spent most of the first part of the season transitioning to the position as he contributed on special teams, playing in each game and making two tackles against BYU in that phase.

*************

The big prize at tight end in the 2014 recruiting class was the top-ranked junior college tight end, Blake Whiteley, the Canadian who played one season at Arizona Western, but Beck has emerged as the impact maker of the two so far and looks to continue on that trajectory based on his blocking ability.

Deandre McNeal is a possibility to play some TE. Alabama recruited him as a WR and TE and we know McNeal will be on the field against ND.
