2023 Recruiting Board/Thread

Part of the problem back then was football wasn't as widespread and popular as it is today and there certainly wasn't the financial incentive there is today.

Another part of the difference is simply a much, much larger population – everywhere. Whereas there was once only one, two or three studs on a team today there can be a dozen or so.

And lastly, coaching matters. It always will. Jerry Jones once said any coach could have coached the '93 Cowboys to the Super Bowl. He lives to regret that statement in no time.

Jimmy Johnson is who made those Cowboys what they were.
100% accurate statement. Jimmy Johnson was exactly the right coach at the right time for that team. The coach won those super bowls and Switzer was fortunate to inherit JJ’s team. Everything fell apart after that and hasn’t been the same since.

Hamilton at IT saying the Texas staff was surprised, and the reporters who cover Tennessee were surprised.

Love this analysis. Can you post your results - I know you did share at least some of the info previously
All right, let's give this a shot.

Just a quick review of how I went about this. Basically, I wanted to see when it came to HS recruiting, how Texas compared to the 6 teams that were contending for playoffs and national championships over the past 5 years. We may end up being ranked #3 or #4 or whatever, but I wanted a way to see how big the gap was between us and them.

This is for the 5 year period from 2018-2022. Again, these numbers represent what percent of the class that fell into these categories instead of raw numbers. My reasoning was that 5 out of 20 is better than 5 out of 25 and not equal.

Top 50 - Georgia 29.3%. Alabama 27.6%. Ohio State 23.2%, Clemson 19.4%, Oklahoma 8.8%. Texas 8.1%, Notre Dame 6.1%.

Top 100 - Alabama 49.6%, Georgia 42.3%, Ohio State 40.2%, Clemson 28.7%, Texas 19.5%, Notre Dame 19.1%, Oklahoma 15.7%.

Top 200 - Alabama 68.3%, Ohio State 64.3%, Georgia 57.7%, Oklahoma 39.2%, Texas 39.0%, Notre Dame, 36.5%, Clemson 28.7%.

Top 300 - Alabama 80.5%, Ohio State 72.3%, Oklahoma 61.8%, Clemson 60.2%, Georgia 57.7%, Texas 55.3%, Notre Dame 54.8%.

Actual number of players signed in the top 50 - Georgia 36, Alabama 34, Ohio State 26, Clemson 21, Texas 10, Oklahoma 9, Notre Dame 7.

Next - What this this looks like for just the 2 years Sark has been recruiting, 2022-2023. Plus what just 2023 currently looks like ?

Follow up to previous post.

Now let's look at how Sark is doing in his 2 years so far 2022-2023. Again, these numbers represent what percent of the class that fell into these categories instead of raw numbers. My reasoning was that 5 out of 20 is better than 5 out of 25 and not equal.

Top 50 - Alabama 31.8%, Georgia 20.8%, Ohio State 17.1%, Texas 12.0%, Clemson 10.0%, Notre Dame 8.9%, Oklahoma 4.9%.

Top 100 - Alabama 56.8%, Georgia 37.5%, Ohio State 24.4%, Clemson 22.5%, Texas 22.0%, Notre Dame 20.0%, Oklahoma 17.1%.

Top 200 - Alabama 75.0%, Georgia 60.4%, Ohio State 56.1%, Notre Dame 57.1%, Oklahoma 43.9%, Texas 38.0%, Clemson 22.5%

Top 300 - Alabama 84.1%, Ohio State 80.5%, Notre Dame 73.3%, Oklahoma 68.3%, Georgia 60.4%, Texas 58.0%, Clemson 53.0%.

Actual number of players signed in the top 50 - Alabama 14, Georgia 10, Ohio State 7, Texas 6, Clemson 4, Notre Dame 4, Oklahoma 2.

Improvement signs for Texas - From 2018 to 2022, Alabama signed more than 3 times as many top 50 players as Texas did and for Sarks 2 years, that has dropped to about twice as many. Georgia had also signed over 3 times as many top 50 players and now that is less than twice as many and Ohio State had signed 2 1/2 times as many and now we are basically equal with them.

A positive 2023 class tidbit - Only one team has signed a higher percentage of players ranked in the top 50 than Texas has. Of course, it's Alabama as 30% of their class currently ranks in the top 50. Texas's number has jumped to 18.2% putting them ahead of both Georgia and Ohio State. That 18.2% is more than double what Texas did from 2018-2022 when only 8.1% of our classes were in the top 50.
