*****Texas vs. USC Game Thread*****

#1. Our defense almost beat USC and a Heisman front runner. #2. Tonight the offense went back to the Maryland game plan. No Warren and throwing the ball way too much. Sam made some great plays and used his feet to get out of trouble. He also made many mistakes that would or should have gotten us blown out if the D wasn't lights out. If we don't stick to the CW3 run game we will ruin Sam and Shane not to mention keep losing games. If Heards package is what we did tonight then scrap it and let him stick to receiver. #3. Herman and Beck need to focus on letting our guys work to their strengths instead if being Offensive gurus. When we had a defensive minded HC or defense sucked when we got an offensive minded HC our offense sucks. This game was ours and our coaches took us out of it.

True freshman QB in his second career start in the Coliseum vs 4th ranked team in the country with heisman hopeful QB.

Gave us the lead with 35 seconds left

led us ot td after allowing USC td in ONE PLAY on their attempt

context matters

i have said a thousand times the defense was awesome but Sam did put us in a position to win.  His fumble also cost us the win.  He made a lot of mistakes too. Freshman

Fair assessment... we are STILL our own worst enemy, and that's the truly shitty part. It's easier to lose when you're just not good enough. But when you're good enough and take yourself outa contention... that stings.

Where can I find the post game interview of Herman?
I just watched it again and last night and he did say that.  Cant find the transcripts though. Even Lowel commented after the post game "Well it appears Herman is sticking with Shane when he is healthy"

This one hurts, but I am so incredibly proud of this team for sticking in it 'til the end. Everyone counted on us getting slaughtered, but no sir. Honestly, I have a much better feeling about this team's trajectory than I did a few weeks ago. Only major gripe...what the hell is Tim Beck thinking with his playcalling? What does he love so much about Porter that CWlll barely ever gets the ball?
Beck said in his Q&A that he goes with whoever Stan Drayton wants in there.

Its been said Porter is the better blocker but I find that ironic when both backs were in the backfield we handed off to Porter while Warren was lead blocker for Porter.  The result 2 yard gain.  Seems ass backwards to me.

I know folks are raising a stink about not giving Warren the touches but what about the O-line play in this game ?  Honestly, I think it has more to do with that.

Yes and no.

First, we weren't able to run the ball consistently and got only very little yardage during Q1 with Porter as the premier ball carrier. After only marginally advancing the ball on the ground for only 1 or 2 yards, we completely gave up on the running game, as far as I remember somewhere in Q2.

Yet, USC reacted to that and dropped more guys into coverage on most plays than they would've/could've done with a running game. They pretty much made us one-dimensional, just like our defense did. What we didn't do though, was going back to running the ball and adjusting offensively to the defensive adjustments on the USC side. I think starting in Q3, when our O-Line was beginning to get a better grasp on the game and after the one DE on the USC side went out with an injury, that's the point where you should go back to pounding the ball.

The O-Line play was shaky in the first half. That's what led to our abandonment of the run game and benefited to sacks we took. Ehlinger took 5 sacks, 4 of which came in the first half, 3 of which came on the back-to-back-to-back plays on our last offensive series. But additionally, I think our one-dimensional play calling makes life somewhat harder for the O-Line. When they always have to drop back, they are constantly on 'defense', instead of getting some kind of a breather when blocking for the run.

So both things are of course somewhat connected, but we made life for our O-Line especially hard at times and failed to relieve them of some of the pressure we had the chance to.
