INSIDE RECEIVER UPDATE:

The inside receivers who have been running with the ones are Lorenzo Joe and Jacorey Warrick. And if that doesn’t get your blood pumping, it’s understandable, because there is a LOT of work to do at inside receiver.

This group is far from a polished product.

We’ve seen Jacorey Warrick have good springs in the past, only to get passed up by guys like Daje Johnson and Armanti Foreman.

But Collin Johnson and John Burt can’t take every snap at outside receiver – not in this high-rep offense.

Joe and Warrick have been the most consistent, so far.

DeAndre McNeal, Ryan Newsome and … wait for it … Jake Oliver – have also been working at inside receiver, pushing Joe and Warrick.

Oliver has great hands. But his problem has always been his lack of speed. So he’s working hard on his footwork to get separation with the way he runs his routes (think Jaxon Shipley). There’s been progress.

It’s no sure thing that Oliver will work into the rotation, but he catches everything. One source said Oliver may have the best hands on the team.

Huge learning curve for McNeal, still, as a route runner and pass catcher, but he’s getting better.

Newsome is small and is a bit of a liability as a blocker, and there’s a lot of blocking required of the inside receivers, especially on the bubble screens. But Newsome has great feet, and once he gets the ball in space, he’s elusive.

Davion Curtis projects as an outside receiver, and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps currently projects as an inside receiver.

And while those two have lots of promise, there is going to be a steep learning curve for them once they hit campus this summer.

This receiver group appears to have two players who are special: John Burt and Collin Johnson.

I’m hearing that Armanti Foreman is working at outside receiver.

Armanti Foreman has got to become more consistent in everything – work ethic, details, focus, etc. When he’s dialed in, he’s electric. When he’s not, he’s almost not even worth putting on the field. It’s a huge year for Armanti Foreman, and I’m told he knows it and has been responding.

QUICK RUNNING BACK UPDATE

D’Onta Foreman ran for about 95 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday’s scrimmage, but he suffered a rib injury. So he’s not been taking part in contact drills this week.

A guy to keep an eye on is Roderick Bernard, who is working his tail off and appears to have all his speed back after recovering from an ACL tear. Bernard, even though he is listed on the roster as a receiver, isn’t much of a receiver.

But he’s fast and runs tough and has been impressive on speed sweeps and quick-hitting misdirection stuff in the run game. He’s basically been the lightning to the thunder of Chris Warren and D’Onta Foreman.

Will be interesting to see if Bernard can find a niche in this offense.

The guy who should make quite an impact when he returns from tearing his ACL last November is Kirk Johnson, who is easily the best receiver among the running backs and can motion out of the backfield to catch passes or even line up as a receiver.

That kind of versatility will be a tremendous weapon in this offense, because it will allow Sterlin Gilbert to line up Kirk Johnson where Gilbert thinks he can get a mismatch.

I’m told a linebacker trying to cover Kirk Johnson on a pass route will not be a fair fight.

Could Texas have their Kicker for 2016? As most know, Texas HC Charlie Strong recently said they’re on the lookout for a kicker as the two they have on campus right now have under-performed this spring. A name to keep an eye on is Chris Naggar from Arlington (TX), who made the 6A All-State team in 2015. Naggar turned down some lower offers after he was accepted into UT and plans to walk-on in 2016.

I was also told that Naggar works with now former Texas kicker, Nick Rose and they plan to be in Austin this weekend working out. The Texas coaches have been made aware of Naggar and it’ll be interesting to see if they check him out this weekend. One thing to remember is this is the exact path Nick Rose went down before eventually earning a scholarship at Texas.

If that is the case, I would love to see the vegas odds....this could be the year to make a couple of bucks.

Seriously...every team has holes. I have a feeling that we are going to be lots better than most give us credit for. I think OU is sick of us outplaying them the last 3 years and actually may come out with a good effort against us, but we are not the soft team many have come to expect lately.

OU at 65% is a little high. Well, a lot high. In fact, maybe they're high.

We have OU's number, or Charlie does. OU lost a ton of experience and talent. For the first time in some time, I think we out-talent most teams we play in the Big 12 this year.

I think Texas even being mentioned in this conversation is a show of respect for what whats going on in Austin.

Texas held practice No. 11 of spring football Thursday afternoon. Here are some notes from a few sources in attendance for Thursday's practice.

- The quarterback rotation remained the same. Shane Buechele and Tyrone Swoopes took all QB reps. Kai Locksley was dressed out for practice but did not see any action. Swoopes took more first-team reps than Buechele, but Buechele did get some work in with the ones.

- The first-team o-line returned to what is looking to be a somewhat set lineup of RT Kent Perkins, RG Patrick Vahe, C Zach Shackelford, LG Brandon Hodges and LT Connor Williams.

- DeShon Elliott took many first string safety reps in place of Dylan Haines. I was told Kevin Vacarro also saw some first-team safety action Thursday. As Jason Higdon reported Saturday evening, Haines is likely out for the remainder of spring after sustaining a severe cut on his knee last week.

- Charles Omenihu is looking like a potential starter at defensive end. He ran with the first-team d-line alongside Poona Ford, Chris Nelson and Naashon Hughes.

- Collin Johnson had a number of solid catches Thursday and scored a touchdown on a fade route while being covered by Kris Boyd during team 11-on-11 drills. Johnson, Armanti Foreman and John Burt consistently ran with the first string offense, according to a source.

- D'Onta Foreman practiced, but was in a green shell and did not see contact. Foreman is recovering from a rib injury he suffered during last Saturday's scrimmage.

- Jacorey Warrick had a decent amount of catches in 11-on-11. He saw a lot of first string action at inside receiver.
