Olson's piece on the offense

"AUSTIN, Texas -- The best barbecue is the country is produced in Austin, Texas. At the world-famous Franklin Barbecue, brisket is cooked low and slow in a smoker for 16 to 18 hours. Perfection requires only salt, pepper and time.

The best offense in the country is produced in Waco, Texas, though disciples of the Art Briles system have been on the move lately. One of his most successful protégés, Dino Babers, got the head-coaching job at Syracuse this offseason. At his introductory press conference, Babers shared some valuable advice Baylor coach Briles once offered.

“He taught a different style of football to me,†Babers said. “It was a situation where he told me just let it simmer. Put it in the Crock-Pot and let it simmer. 'Don’t think much about it, and I promise you after a year or two, it will change the way you think.' Art, you were absolutely right. Thank you so much.â€

When Babers first got cooking as a head coach, at Eastern Illinois in 2012, his hand-picked apprentice was Sterlin Gilbert, a 33-year-old prodigy working at a spot right between Austin and Waco: Temple High School. Four years later, he’s the offensive coordinator at Texas.

This spring, Gilbert is trying to teach as fast and as effectively as he can. He’s not simmering. He’s trying to microwave a brisket........"

THE G-FORCE OFFENSE HAS NO PLAYBOOK

Instead, each player has an iPad with the hand signal or call (or both) – followed by a video visual of what that player’s role is in the play.

Art Briles moved away from a playbook a long time ago and believes his players are always much more “visual†learners who are more likely to retain their role in a play by watching it – rather than by studying squiggly lines on a white sheet of paper.
