Why did it take so long to put Heard on the field ?

I'm good with him redshirting last year. I would have liked him to have started the Notre Dame game.
Actually, I'm good with the way things played out. With Watson calling the plays, Heard would have been handcuffed instead of showcased. Shaking his confidence at least, and getting him hurt at worst. O-line looks better since that game, giving him a much better chance.

The score may have been closer, but the outcome would have been the same IMHO, still a bad loss.

Tho we ended up losing to Cal, Heard still came out a winner, and that loss did nothing to blemish his record or his confidence.

I agree. I'm thinking that it all worked out for the best with how it all played out.

Hard to justify playing him behind Swoops all summer or ND.

Moving forward it is clear to all he is the QB at Texas.

I don't think Heard fit what watson was trying to do. Watson wanted to run a west coast dink and dunk style (nothing wrong with that) and  Watson may have been right. However, it is my belief  that you know what you recruited or has been recruited. It is the coaches job to "fit" his offensive style that compliments what your QB does best. That being said, when you have a talented blazer that can make plays with his feet, one would think you would want to go with a spread style offense that allows for your QB to make plays with his feet.

Defending a QB that can run/throw, puts a tremendous amount of pressure on a defense. They have to read and react, which slows their momentum tremendously. Furthermore, it makes you have to take someone out of coverage to spy the QB. If you don't, you pay. Heards biggest asset is his feet AT THIS TIME. Wait until he sees the field and and can go through his progressions. He is electric, dynamic and those guys are hard to find and even more difficult to recruit, because so many spread offenses demand them.

The ability to run is what made VY great. I believe this kid has the ability to get much better, he just needs more seat time. This is Heards best offense which compliments his ability much more than a west coast style. Kudos to Coach Strong for making the move.

I agree. And Watson's looking rather bad right now for what certainly seems like was him holding Heard back. Optics right now suck for Watson as it looks like he just didn't know a talent when he saw it.

I think you're right though. He was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Swoopes, as awful as he is, was the only pro-style option Watson had. So it was on him for forcing it and not adapting his style, as you said.

BTW, I love it when you post. :)

So here's a question to ponder......if for some reason Swoopes comes in, do you think he does better in this style offense and under Norvel, or is he done???

I would argue that he would do better under this offense when your progressions are simplified.  I am not sure I like his tendency to hand off when in doubt, but I think the reads and progressions are a lot simpler under Norvel.

I am by no means saying he should start, I definitely think we have found our QB that will carry us over the next 3-4 years, but just wondering what you guys think.

Interesting question. I think he does better than he did due to the simplicity are reduced playbook.  One of his challenges was the inability to quickly push thru progressions and inability to deal with too many options.  That is why he did his best in the hurry up offense with one simple read.

That said, Jerrod Heard has a firm grip on this position and has breathed life into this program.  This is a different team with him at QB and as a team leader.  Unfortunately for Swoopes that excitement/leadership skill is something he just doesn't have no matter the offense

I think Swoopes will struggle in any offense because he lacks confidence.

And, yeah, he's not much of a running threat. I'd rather see Locksley in there if something happens to Heard.

Swoopes really should consider moving to TE because his best days as a QB are over. His size would give Heard or Locksley a big target.

Jay Norvel needs some credit for putting the offense back on track in such a short period of time.

He didn't get spring ball and all summer to work on details, he has had only a few weeks to get this offense working again.

I look forward to watching him work in his new position of calling plays and doing a make over of the offense.

He took some tough hits as QB since he couldn't outrun the defense so yes, I do.
Taking a hit and delivering one are two different things entirely. I doubt Swoopes would be much of a blocker, but maybe he'd surprise me.

Moot point, because he probably won't be moved to TE.
