Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

I saw a super chat on "Coffee and Football" yesterday that I would like to ask this board. When did you first realize that Tom Herman would not survive as the Longhorns coach?
My first inkling was the double bird on LHN's coverage of signing day. The nail in the coffin for me was the defiance with CDC's mandate about the "Eyes of Texas" issue. What do y'all think?

The double bird was definitely low rent. But to me, when he mocked the Missouri QB from the sidelines in that bowl game, I thought right then he would be gone soon.

For me it was the combination of whiffing on Brockmiers and Ewers. At that point it became crystal clear that under Herman Texas wasn't the place top recruits saw as their best option, and this was only going to get worse over time

It's crazy to me that both Charlie Strong and Tom Herman couldn't find much, if any coaching success after coaching at Texas. They were good enough coaches to have been hired by Texas...

I thnik both were good positional coaches. Strong was like a duck out of water here at Texas. Herman was an egotistical priick who was never afraid to show what an ass he was.
When it came to head coachiing, IMO, they were both in way over theiir heads here.

It is crazy, but it's more common then not for a coach to do well at a non major school for a few years, then gets hired by a big time program and bomb. Both Strong and Herman had future NFL QBs in their final year at the previous smaller program. It's much easier to win when you have a great QB, weaker competition and less noise of boosters, administration, media and fans...

When a top program hires a coach who is moving up the coaching ladder, the success rate is fairly low. These days the cost of these mistakes has gone through the roof, so a bad hire can easily end the career of an athletic director.

But what's baffling to me is why they can't just go back to a smaller school and become successful again 🤷‍♂️
Herman seemed to depart from his overall offensive approach while at Texas. He was a offensive mastermind who came to Texas and just tried to dominate teams with a ground and pound approach.

Similar to Shaka Smart. Made it big running Havoc and then abandoned it at Texas.

The 2nd time I heard him say that "winning is hard." It is hard but good coaches with the resources at Texas figure out how to do it consistently. I realized then that it was a mantra and excuse for him and he did not have any real answers or direction to get it done.
