SignUp Now!Think about where Herman's recruiting strength is. Heading to Oregon would mean he has to recruit a wider region, and one where he has no current strong relationships with high school coaches. really, the only reason Oregon would be an interesting Option is because of the single BMD donor luxury. Oregon was a nothing program before Kelly and Kelly was a good fit there because he is an asshole and only has to try to get along with the one BMD. The reason Kelly is going to trouble finding another decent college gig is his personality birth defect. He sucks at relating to the press and to donors.btw, if LSU and Oregon get into it, too, it may go higher. It could go high enough that other hats go into the ring. We may find out just how much an elite football coach is worth, because we need one.
College football playoffs, baby!
Excellent point in regards to Oregon. Herman would have to cast a wider net up there. As far as LSU is concerned, I like UT's odds in a bidding war with them. The state is broke and it would be hard for them to compete with UT (as far as salary is concerned).Think about where Herman's recruiting strength is. LSU is an interesting option for Herman and would be easier for him to recruit.
Staying where he can recruit well and rely on existing high school coach relationships will be important for Herman, who will be stepping into a high profile spot with big expectations. He is going to be expected to deliver early and to do that, he will need some really good recruiting classes.
LSU athletics is still in great financial shape. The athletics side still is sending money to the academic side. In typical S!E!C! fashion, at LSU it's athletics first, academics as an afterthought.Excellent point in regards to Oregon. Herman would have to cast a wider net up there. Just to update you, U of H is a public university. And while "football" is revenue generating, U of H football is not revenue generating. It is deficit generating. To the tune of over $20 million/yr.
Tillman can do whatever he wants with his money, but I promise you that if U of H continues to subsidize athletics, the legislature will start shutting down funding. If they have tens of millions to shift from academics to fund a money losing athletics program, the taxpayers are not going to fund those losses when TSU is only 100 yards down the street and badly in need of funds to support its academics.
Obviously, you missed last summer's Higher Education Subcommittee hearings when Khator was sitting next to McRaven, and Perry was grilling McRaven on the UT Houston initiative. "If the university has tens of millions available for other purposes (the UT Houston land purchase), maybe we need to take a closer look at how much the taxpayers are allocating to the university." U of H is worried about having to compete against UT Houston for academic staff and complaining that UT Houston might start a bidding war for academic talent in Houston and the added salary expense at U of H might detract from academic support.
But if Khator already has $20million/yr extra to shift from academic support to athletics, and then they decide to spend tens of millions more, not on academic support, but on athletics, how can the legislature accept the school doesn't have enough public funds allocated to academics? And they want to pull this stunt SIX WEEKS before the legislature meets to discuss funding for U of H!?
Tillman is a U of H regent. They will unquestionably call him to testify before the legislature for U of H's funding. And you expect him to say there is no other source of funding for the U of H academic needs other than taxpayer funding and not have Perry, Menendez and Watson tear him to pieces?
When U of H is receiving no public money and "the billionaires" are funding it exclusively, "the billionaires" can laugh all they want. As long as the taxpayers are funding the school, and the school is using student generated revenue to cover its athletics deficit, the legislature is going to have its say. U of H athletics isn't even close to being self sufficient. And the legislature has far more pressing needs for higher education allocations than funding an out of control athletics program at U of H.
If you want to see all hell break loose at U of H, just let them give Herman a $60 million contract guarantee. The money cannot come from private hands directly to the coach's pocket. Texas law prohibits public employees from accepting financial gifts for their official functions. The money has to be donated to the school and then allocated by the U of H Board of Regents. And if the U of H regents sign off on Herman's $60 million contract, the university will get crushed in the appropriations process.
You need to learn about Texas politics. Its a fascinating subject.
This made me laughWe've gone way past my degree of care here. I'll just say you seem to be arguing with your own headline. I should back away and let you work it out on your own.
On your last line, lol, I covered it for 17 years. What are you going to teach me? lol
You're okay until you become condescending. Then you're just a phallus.
Obviously, you are going to continue to believe what you are going to believe and I'm not going to teach you anything, but me know when that $60 million guaranteed is approved by the U of H Board of Regents. lol. We've gone way past my degree of care here. Tillman never offered to back a $60 million guaranteed contract for Tom Herman. He would never do something so insipidly against the best interests of the university. You may want to upgrade your sources. Or not. I'm guessing not.
He recruited JT Barrett to tOSU. Meyer had no clue who Barrett was. Obvi neither did Mack Brown, who signed Swoopes over Barrett.Im just curious since all signs seem to be pointing to Herman.
How well does this guy recruit? Yea I know he got Ed Oliver but it was more circumstances and family as to the reason he signed with UH.
I keep hearing he has many ties within Texas but can he pull in top 10 classes here at Texas?
I saw an interview recently with JT's coach who said JT had no issues coming in and competing with Swoopes. He would have commited on the spot had Mack offered him. He waited for a bit, but once OSU got involved and showed him love, it was over and never waivered. Mack's loyalty to commited players always rubbed me the wrong way and imho led to the entitlement issue that has been prevelent in the program. He recruited JT Barrett to tOSU. It's a double-edged sword. You can pull a lot of great recruits if you promise not to recruit their position the following year. But you can miss out on some special players that way too. Also, once one player has the non-compete extended to him, others are certain to demand the same. It works if you hit on your recruits every year.I saw an interview recently with JT's coach who said JT had no issues coming in and competing with Swoopes. Apparently you did not catch the sarcasm of my post.
That is an interesting what if on Gilbert and Kinne.
