Tom Herman Update

While I can understand the Navy game to an extent but SMU when you are ranked #11.  Oh Please.

I don't want to get back into another overrated coach like Strong obviously was.  I was all aboard the Herman train last year but after watching them the last 3 games I am not as impressed.

At one point Herman was down 3 TD's to SMU (3-4) I believe.  That is was very familiar to one said Iowa State game last year.

You can excuse that loss all you want but after 3 years of shit I'm tired of excuses.  People said anyone but Mack and look how that turned out.  I remember the dismay the fans were in after BYU torched Manny Diaz defense for 550 rushing yards.  Funny how immune we have become now.  Strong's defense gives up 773 yards and we just go about our business or talk about how Gilbert and his questionable play calling.

The next hire has to be right.
Don't disagree with you at all that the next hire has to be right. And I'm not excusing the SMU loss at all.

All I'm saying is that you are going to be hard-pressed to find a coach who does not have a bad loss or two on their record.

Would we look at PJ Fleck?

I still like Malzahn. He is the step child in the state to Alabama and still puts together a good team. He turned them around quickly. He recruits like crazy. They are big, strong, physical, and a great offensive mind. He wouldn't be the step child here. With this recruiting base, it would be lights out on what he could do. Just my opinion.

I cant see how everyone is so thrilled with Herman being the choice.  He lost to SMU and Navy.  Yea Strong is terrible but SMU and Navy?
Yeah, the loss to SMU is a helluva lot more disappointing and disturbing than the Navy loss.

You can write off the Navy loss as "a game where the defense wasn't prepared to match their physicality and triple-option attack". But, SMU? UH sees that offense and execution all the time. That was just a flat team who didn't come to play - at all.

I'm not saying Herman still isn't the right choice, but I've slowed my roll a little where he's concerned.

Three thoughts on PJ Fleck.

1. I don't think we will take a look at him.

2. We had better hope that no one else in the B12 does either.

3. Don't be surprised when he turns out to be the next Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.

I don't share those concerns. In fact, I think Herman may be a little distracted by conversations he's having to have as well as the thoughts he's probably having.

The team likely took SMU lightly and just walked into an ambush. SMU is a well-coached team, despite the talent issue. I wouldn't mind if we entertained the idea of Morris here.

Herman proved all he needed to prove when he wiped out FSU and then encored with a win over OU. 13-1 ain't easy in any conference. Houston has deficiencies that he's been able to hide until recently.

Navy is a solid team, very disciplined, make few mistakes. No shame in dropping one to them.

Take a look around . . . things are problematic even at winning programs right now. OU just gave up a record 850 yards of offense and 59 points . . in a win.

I agree 100% on all of these. I know Texas wants someone with a little more experience, but like you said, he is going to turn up somewhere and hope it isn't someone we play regularly.

This may have already been discussed, but IF Herman does come to Texas will Sterlin Gilbert stay on?  Or since Herman is an offensive guy will he install his own brand? This offense is light years better than what we ran last year; however, I am a little concerned that it's TOO predictable and it absolutely irks me that we don't use the middle of the field AT ALL.

I'm right there with you on Morris, but perhaps I'm too personally involved. I've known Chad since his first job as a junior varsity coach at Eustace, so my opinion is clouded, and I admit that. But I do think he is a brilliant offensive mind and could see him being a great hire IF he could lure an elite defensive coordinator with him.

And no, I don't see him bolting Texas for aggy unless we gave him a reason to.

Herman's offense is being run at UH; not Applewhite's.

My euphoric glee meter for Sterlin's offense has gone from a 10 to about a 5.  I love the power running; but I saw enough side-ways passing in the early 2000's to last me a life time.

Ain't this the truth.

Of course, it's not Buechele's fault when Leonard drops a routine slant pass on 3rd & short. IMO, we need to utilize the whole field - not just outside the hashes. Drag a TE or delay a RB over the middle once in awhile, for crissakes!

Your prerogative, but SMU sucks. UH should run them off the field if they're mentally prepared to play ball.

I didn't say I was "concerned" about hiring Herman. I'm just not as excited about him after UH's last 3 underwhelming performances; Navy, Tulsa, & SMU. He is still in my Top 5 desirable candidates and is one we should be able to land assuming Meyer, Harbaugh, & Saban ain't happening.

He could still be the best choice to turn UT around. Maybe UH's losses will result in a cost-savings during contract negotiations? My hope is that Texas is indeed Herman's "dream job" and that he won't be distracted from having the 'Horns prepared against inferior opponents.

It is Buechele's 'fault'. He is a freshman. At the beginning of the year he couldn't read the defense at speed. Everybody was (and should be) impressed with his ability to throw the deep ball but when you take it away and you take his little hitches to the outside away you have a freshman QB who is going to throw interceptions, often. I was encouraged a game or two back (OU) when Gilbert realized the hitches weren't working, scrapped the game plan and went to hooks about 5-8 yards down field. It had the same effect on the coverage and the safeties as the hitches, it opened up the deep ball (more single coverage). Gilbert is not attacking the middle because he wants the offense to retain possession. Buechele is getting his seasoning this year and overall I think he will be much better next year as a result. But, he is tiny.

So is Ehlinger. He ain't 6' 1 1/2 "

I hate to say it but you answered your own question. It is probable Ehlinger won't be the answer either. Many people have confirmation bias when a kid commits. Since he committed to Texas and since you love Texas and since you want Texas to win it is assumed that Ehlinger will win. He might but it is not logical.
