If CS survives next year.

â–ºIf Strong does keep the job at Texas, he will be in the market for a new defensive coordinator. So will Brian Kelly at Notre Dame and possibly Jimbo Fisher at Florida State and Mark Dantonio at Michigan State. That could create a frenzied market for coordinators and big paydays for defensive coaches currently at smaller program.

Arguably the most sought-after name will be Wake Forest’s Mike Elko, who has been with Dave Clawson since Bowling Green. Elko has done a tremendous job all three years at Wake Forest, and his defense is currently allowing just 17.9 points per game. He’s primed to be this year’s Don Brown, who went from Boston College to Michigan. Houston’s Todd Orlando, Louisville’s Todd Grantham and Washington’s Pete Kwiatkowski are among those whose services will be highly coveted.

Don't like the way Hugh Freeze runs his program.

The key, according to one person with knowledge of the industry, is what happens at Texas. If Charlie Strong can’t save his job, Texas is expected to pursue Houston coach Tom Herman. But if that marriage falls apart for whatever reason, it could trigger a series of dominoes that impact multiple top-25 programs. Among the names that could be mentioned in connection with Texas are Florida’s Jim McElwain, Ole Miss’ Hugh Freeze, Washington’s Chris Petersen, North Carolina’s Larry Fedora and California’s Sonny Dykes. It’s also likely Florida State's Jimbo Fisher, Fedora and Freeze will be in play at LSU if interim coach Ed Orgeron doesn’t do enough to be elevated permanently.

The problem I see with the DCs on that list (apart from Elko) is that they're all at highly ranked schools. Getting them to leave a top-10/15 ranked school to come to a school which has barely scraped together a .500 record over the last 6.5 years would be an uphill battle. Personally, I like the idea of promoting BJM to DC to be a "DC in title only" to take some of the defensive load off of Charlie, but still give Charlie control of the defense. Again, this is all assuming Charlie gets another shot in 2017.

We don't need the distractions (and probable recruiting violations) of Hugh Freeze, Petersen's not leaving the Pacific Northwest, and Sonny Dykes has put together a mediocre-at-best team in Cal. I don't know much about McElwain, so I'd say Larry Fedora is the only one on that list that I think Texas would go after hard.

I think if we fire Charlie and Herman turns us down, after that I think the list could go Chip Kelly, Larry Fedora, and PJ Fleck (not necessarily in that order).

Hugh Freeze will not be on list of coaching candidates at Texas because of ncaa violations at ole miss

if Charlie stays I would expect him to keep control of defense assuming if he wins enough to stay the defense continues to get better I would expect BJM to get title of DC then decide if secondary needs new blood

UT will not hire Chip Kelly because of his past cheating. PJ Fleck would be too big a risk for UT to hire at his age

What has Larry Fedora done to deserve the Texas job?

Chip Kelly was still a very successful college coach, and I'm sure many NCAA programs will be after his services if (read: when) he's fired from the 49ers.

PJ Fleck is 5 years younger than Herman. In terms of experience, he will have had the same number of years as an HC that Charlie had when he came to UT, and 2 more years than Herman.

Larry Fedora led North Carolina to the ACC championship game last year, and they've looked fairly decent this year.

I wouldn't be very enthusiastic about any of those 3, but I don't see any better options. None of the Saban/Meyer/Petersen trio are even worth mentioning, and many of the others in Wolken's list (Dykes/Freeze) are laughable. It's funny how so many people are clamoring for Charlie's head, yet I'm not seeing any candidates beyond Tom Herman that I (or many other people) would be excited about.
