Obviously a great win. Due to various factors I have not yet been able to watch us play a game. I'm going to rectify that.
For anyone who was there what was the atmosphere like?
Bear, it was reportedly a sellout, but in actuality it wasn't. Typical of Texas sellout games. Not trying to be overly critical ... Texas basketball attendance just is what it is. On the positive side, attendance was a heck of a lot better than the UTSA and other games so far ... and the enthusiasm of the crowd was the best all season.
It seemed to me that the play of the game had a lot to do with the enthusiasm of the crowd. A close back and forth game against a good team engenders a better crowd response. UNC had a good fan representation. My wife thought it was a quarter of the crowd, but a sixth of the crowd is probably too optimistic. UNC fans were more responsive than their numbers would seem to indicate and that enhanced the overall attmosphere of the game.
I was thinking about the game atmosphere during the game and it occured to me that the more traditional Texas cheers such as TEXAS!!! FIGHT!!! have loud sequences interspersed with fairly long silent sequences. I am not suggesting any changes, but it occured to me that that tends to inadvertently put a damper on what could be a louder, more racous environment.
With a game like this one where the the momentum see saws back and forth, the Texas crowd got into the game more enthusiastically, especially as a response to Texas making a mini run or a good defensive stand - with an enthusiastic cresendo. The problem is that when action stops, there is applause that drops off and ends. What's missing is an increasing prolonged cresendo like you get in some venues - like with prolonged foot stomping.
The pre-introductory sequence seems to be much better this year. I like the mix of the graphics and the music and the fireworks this year - also, we have the best damn disco ball in basketball! For this game, they dropped a lot of the long skinny orange and white balloons all around the arena from the rafters almost simultaneously. That provided a nice visual effect and spread "motion enthusiasm" around the arena and not just in the student sections behind the goals. Maybe they should have given more balloons to the students, though, as the balloon waving enthusiasm decreased as the game progressed.
The end of the game was interesting - the noise level seemed to decrease reflexively as Taylor mised his shot with a seemingly collective holding of breath as Javan gathered the ball and launched his shot. There was a split second of silence as the ball went in the hoop and then there was an explosion of sound and another explosion of sound two or three minutes later when the refs indicated that the shot was good. It was great that a majority of the crowd both downstairs and upstairs stayed for the "Eyes" with enthusiasm expressed abundantly throughout. Watching the coaches and players celebrate on the floor was a great sight to see. I would of thrown up two sets of Horns if my right hand had not cramped up!
I gotta admit that the game atmosphere was pretty good for a Texas basketball game ... though nothing could compare to the "Strollin' Nolan" game against Arkansas in the old SWC days. However, could this game's atmosphere and the overall atmosphere on game day in the Drum be better? ... absolutely!!! I really loved being at this game. This team is going to a lot of fun to watch. Who knows, maybe Shaka Smart's Assassins will generate a whole new attitude in the Drum.
