****Texas vs. Rice Game Thread*****

I'm excited to see this offense next week with Heard getting all the first team reps and Norvell/Traylor running the show.

Texas could be a good team by the time November rolls around.

Just got back from the game and I was not surprised at Heard's performance but I was (pleasantly) surprised he started.

I know it was just Rice but you could fell the energy and see the spark in the team with Heard in the game.

Did the announce how many freshman played? It seemed like half the players on the field were freshman or sophomores.
CS said after the game that it affects the whole team when you get energy from our QB. Also, said that Heard is always energetic and smiling. He's smiling tonight.

LET THE HEARD ERA BEGIN!!! THANK GOD!!! HOOK EM! AND JESUS CHRIST PLEASE HELP OUR HORRIBLE DEFENSE!!! HOOK EM!!!

Who in the wide world of sports said that JERROD Heard couldn't throw the deep ball! The kid's arm looked fine to me! The kid has me completely excited about the future...

He didn't throw the deep ball coming out of high school.
I know... But he's two years removed from HS. He is utterly exciting and should give us all SOME hope... The throws he made tonight should quiet all of those doubting his arm strength. Undoubtedly he has much to learn and develop but the kid showed he has what it takes. Now if only our OLine weren't terrible and our D learned how to play football.

Coach Strong might need to have a "Come to Jesus" talk with Brick Haley about tonight
This is why we really need some 5 star recruits on DL.  Elliot comes to mind.  Daylon Mack would have been perfect last year but f*ck the ags.

"Jerrod"  Got to get the name of our starting qb right.  He is a rock star!

Thank you for the correction... After a day of drinking and celebration I should have just gone with his last name. Hahaha I swear I know the name of the kid I have been petitioning to get the keys for a year plus!

Everybody wants to play this "stars dont matter" game but thats just not reality. We need high 4's and 5's on the OLine and DLine. Most of the time star ratings are what they are for a reason.

I wouldn't say MIGHT, I'd say MUST have that convo. Our D looked bad against Rice and terrible against ND. Vance Bedford needs to be part of that convo also... Our secondary does not look good.

Heard's ability to run helps cover up the deficiencies of the OL, which is a huge plus.  Ridgeway is the only DT capable of stopping the run on a regular basis and he isn't 70%.  DE pressure is non existent and only pressure generated has to be from blitzes, which is death versus better offenses.  The secondary was much better once Hill and Boyd entered the game as Davis and Bonney simply aren't playing very well with the bright lights on.  Hill and Boyd represent the future and the future is bright, thank goodness!  Love me some John Burt, good looking freshman!

The best lineman on the team was a 3 star who played TE in high school. The last 4 and 5 star lineman we had haven't developed into anything...

Heard has the juice.

Carlton: Denton Guyer-ex Jerrod Heard provides 'spark,' offers hope to desperate Texas fan base

AUSTIN â†The moment Jerrod Heard had been waiting so long for came Saturday â†and he delivered.

All the Texas redshirt freshman needed was a chance, it turned out. After watching from the sidelines last season and losing an offseason quarterback competition with Tyrone Swoopes, Heard delivered a 42-28 win Saturday over Rice in his first college start. He threw two touchdowns, ran for 96 yards and finished with 216 yards total offense without a turnover.

"My goal was to bring a spark," said Heard, who learned he was starting in the locker room before the game.

Beyond the stats, he displayed the multi-dimensional talents that intrigued Texas coaches when he was in high school.

After a wretched week following a 38-3 opening loss at Notre Dame, Heard and new play-caller Jay Norvell offered hope to a program and fan base that desperately craved any positive signs.

Coach Charlie Strong had demoted primary play-caller Shawn Watson to quarterbacks coach Tuesday and elevated Norvell, who had been hired as a receivers coach in January after being fired at Oklahoma. In turn, Strong and Norvell decided to start Heard.

"It was a tough decision to make," Strong said. "We had to have a spark."

He understood the desire for change as much as the 86,458 in attendance, with about 15,000 no-shows at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

"What everyone wanted was to see something different," Strong said. "When Jerrod took the field, you could see the crowd get all excited. He has an attitude about him.

"I finally said, 'Just put him out there.'"

Norvell hadn't been a lead play-caller since UCLA in 2007. Heard hadn't started a game since leading Denton Guyer to the 4A Division I state title at AT&T Stadium in 2013.

If there were any nerves, it didn't show.

Thanks to Heard and two big punt returns, Texas scored 21 points in the first quarter, one more than the offense had produced in its last three games dating back to 2014.

His teammates weren't surprised.

"All the guys wanted to see him play. He'd been held back, like a prison cell," said freshman linebacker Malik Jefferson, who returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

While Texas still has issues â†the defense yielded 30 first downs and 462 yards â†the mood was brighter.

Heard wasn't the only story for Texas.

Senior Daje Johnson made a couple of Rice tacklers miss and returned a punt 85 yards, giving Texas a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Duke Thomas returned another punt 56 yards in the first quarter to set up a 1-yard plunge by Johnathan Gray for a 21-0 lead.

"The thing is Daje is so dynamic in the open field," Strong said.

Still the move to Heard was the dominant storyline.

Watson had maintained throughout the offseason that Tyrone Swoopes had the clear edge in the quarterback competition. Maybe Swoopes could have posted similar numbers, as he did at times in 2014 when not facing top-level defenses.

But it was Heard's moment, and he took advantage of it. While Heard lacks Swoopes' arm strength, he found Armanti Foreman for a 32-yard touchdown pass.

After Rice cut the margin to 21-14 at halftime, Heard hit freshman John Burt in stride for a 69-yard touchdown just 23 seconds into the third quarter.

"Probably two, three years ago, I didn't have the arm for that," Heard said.

Heard ran down the field, chest-bumped Burt and showed the kind of emotion that had been lacking at the position.

"When your quarterback has juice," Strong said, "then your team is going to have juice."

Five Thoughts: Jerrod Heard gets first start for Texas, leads Longhorns to win over Rice

AUSTIN -- Texas head coach Charlie Strong said Monday the quarterback competition was open, and Saturday the Longhorns emerged with a new starter -- redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard. The Heard era started with a 42-28 win at home over the Rice Owls.

Here are five thoughts after Texas' win.

1. Heard impresses

Heard got the start for Texas over junior Tyrone Swoopes.

In his first drive as the starter, Heard led the Longhorns down the field for an 80-yard touchdown drive. He capped off the drive with a 32-yard touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Armanti Foreman.

Despite a lackluster performance in the second quarter, Texas got back on track in the third quarter. Heard threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver John Burt on the first offensive play of the second half.

He finished with 120 yards passing and two scores (4 of 7), adding 96 yards on the ground via 10 carries.

Heard's play against Rice sparked a new energy after the Longhorns' 38-3 blowout to Notre Dame last weekend.

2. Punt returners shine

Texas' punt returners struggled last season but they redeemed themselves against the Owls.
Senior wide receiver Daje Johnson scored a touchdown on an 85-yard return. Johnson's return was the first Texas punt return for a touchdown since Johnson returned an 85-yard punt against Oklahoma in 2013.

On the following punt, senior cornerback Duke Thomas 56-yards to the Rice 6-yard line to set up an eventual Texas touchdown.

Texas set a new-game record for most punt return yards with 175.

3. Defense struggles

The Longhorns gave up 214 yards on the ground to Notre Dame last weekend and that trend continued against Rice.

Texas gave up 237 yards rushing against the Owls. Rice capitalized from Texas' porous run defense with a 22-yard touchdown run from redshirt freshman Samuel Steward in the second quarter for their first points. The Owls followed their first scoring drive with an 87-yard drive which ended with a 16-yard touchdown run.

With Rice utilizing its run game, it was able to setup the play-action pass from redshirt senior quarterback Driphus Jackson. Jackson finished with 139 yards passing. His favorite target, senior Dennis Parks, had eight receptions for 77 yards.

4. Long drives lead to touchdowns

Among the Longhorns' defensive issues, they have continued to give up touchdowns on long drives.

Notre Dame was able to drive the ball against Texas and that continued Saturday against Rice.
The Owls first touchdown was the result of a double possession because of a Texas interception which was fumbled. Rice's original drive started at its own 25 yard line and went eight plays before the turnover. The Owls got the ball back and used six plays to score.

Their next drive started at their own 13 and went 16 plays for a touchdown.

Texas' struggles to get off the field are becoming an interesting trend.

5. Freshmen continue to shine.

The Longhorns' young players continued to show promise in their game against the Owls.
Freshman Malik Jefferson led Texas in total tackles with nine through the middle of the fourth quarter. He also had one tackle for a loss and scored a 26-yard touchdown off a bad option.

Burt's touchdown was a highlight of the game. He finished the game with 69 yards and a one touchdown on the one catch.

Freshman cornerback Kris Boyd was responsible for jarring the ball loose on Jefferson's fumble return.

While Texas has had its struggles in its first two games, the freshmen continue to be a bright spot for the team.
